I finished Diane Chamberlain's new novel, "The Stolen Marriage" late the other night; I simply couldn't stop reading until I turned the last page at 4 AM. Yesterday, I was so lost in a post-reading reverie ("book hangover?") that I forgot to go to an appointment I had at 5 PM. I am a great fan of Diane Chamberlain and have read and loved most of her books; however, "The Stolen Marriage" moves her up to the next level--from the Kristin Hannah/Barbara Delinsky crowd to the Chris Bohjalian/Wally Lamb/Curtis Sittenfeld realm. Based loosely on a true story, this powerful book is the real deal - a brilliantly-crafted, well-plotted, and flawlessly researched novel that will not disappoint any reader who loves suspense in a family setting.Set in 1944, the storyline revolves around three major issues of the era: the taboo of out-of-wedlock pregnancy, the laws against interracial marriage, and the epidemic of infantile paralysis (polio). Chamberlain's tightly-woven plot kept me turning pages. "The Stolen Marriage" is replete with multi-dimensional characters who are certainly not who they seem to be, but I won't disclose the ending. I will say that the twist outdid Jodi Picoult. I commend Diane Chamberlain on her graduation to the next league of literary fiction writers. Highly recommended!

I'm so sorry to give this novel three stars - like many other reviewers, I have been a Diane Chamberlain fan since her very first book - but this one didn't hit the mark for me. While the glimpse into history - the polio epidemic, race relations - were compelling, the "secrets" fell sadly short, and the characters were almost completely cliches. I had the whole plot figured out very quickly, which was disappointing. I also felt like way too much time was spent on Tess's almost willful naivete - after a certain point, it just came across as disingenuous to me. If you haven't read her older books, they are more worth your time and money than this book was.

It's amazing how a wrong step can change the outcome of your whole life! This is exactly what happened to the main character of The Stolen Marriage.Tess DeMello comes from an Italian family. She's Catholic and she has been in love with the same boy she grew up with as far as she can remember. This boy, now a man is a doctor and they are engaged. Tess in planning her wedding when he decides to volunteer in a different town and he leaves Tess alone for weeks making her wonder if he has changed his mind about marrying her.In one night, a wrong decision and Tess will have to leave the town and the people she loves. She will marry Henry Kraft and move to Hickory, North Carolina. Henry's mother and sister are not thrilled about the wedding. The town doesn't like Tess either. Everyone, will make her life difficult and make her feel like nothing but an outcast. It doesn't help that Henry keeps many secrets and he doesn't seem inclined to share them with her. He doesn't seem to want to share their bed either! The Stolen Marriage had a good mystery going on. I wanted to know what Henry was hiding and why were so many people were against Tess. I think Diane Chamberlain did a good job in leading us into the big reveal. I personally liked the outcome. It made sense to me.Tess was a good character to root for. She tried her best to continue with her career despite Henry and his mother not wanting her to pursue it. I didn't hate Henry but I didn't like him most of the time. I thought he let his mother and sibling get away with too much instead of defending Tess from them.Overall, I enjoyed the Stolen Marriage and wouldn't hesitate to grab another novel by Diane Chamberlain.Cliffhanger: No4/5 Fangs

I would give this 3.5 stars but there is no 1/2 category! I love the way Diane Chamberlain writes and this was an easy read like her other books. I just found the main premise unbelievable! I kept trying to bring myself into the 1940’s when the story occurred to convince myself that it could’ve happened. I loved the ending however, she had a few twists and turns that I didn’t expect, but they were great. I always want a happy ending and this book had one, so I finished it on a high note, but somewhere in the middle I wasn’t pleased with the story line...

If you enjoy stories which evolve from truths--either factual or from human strengths and frailities, you will find that you can't put this book down. It includes racial attitudes, cultural and religious mores of the time close to the end of WW II.The characters are so realistically portrayed that your heart and mind cares what happens to them. Diane Chamberlain writes, plots, and weaves stories that will keep you up long past your bedtime and you 'll find them hard to forget.

The characters in this book lack depht and are poorly developed. There are some characters you think are important but turn out to be completely irrelevant . What twists and turns ? You can predict what happens way ahead of time.Minor synopsis : moronic woman is taken advantage of by everyone she meets and blames herself because, well, she is very moronic.I only gave it three stars because, although I found the book predictable and hated all the characters, I was able to finish it without feeling completly bored.

As a look back on the way American life used to be this was a great window to the past. With WWII as the backdrop, different romances played out. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a realistic ending as everyone lived happily ever after that were involved in all the intrigue and romance, while those that were truly not nice people suffered appropriately.
