For years, he seemed ageless and unchanging, but recently editors and writers have found many creative ways to explore the superhero's mythos. Expanding upon Michael Fleisher's The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes: Batman (DC Comics, 2007), this volume attempts to clarify how Batman fits into these story arcs, and to catalog nearly every villain and close ally he encountered between 1939 and September 2007. Entries are limited to characters and information within the Batman universe. This focus on characters and internal plot may be fascinating to fans, but will limit the book's usefulness as a research tool. Fewer than one-third of the entries are accompanied by black-and-white illustrations. Two sets of color plates add much to the flavor of the work, though they impart little information. He has worked for DC Comics and Gist Communications, and he served as director of publishing operations for Marvel Comics. He lives with his wife, Deb, in Fairfield, Connecticut.

It has been roughly 30 odd years since anyone has re-written what Michael Fleisher wrote in Encyclopaedia of Comic Book Heroes - Batman Volume 1. If there was ever anyone qualified enough to take on the challenge it definitely would be robert Greenberger, that's exactly what he did analysing and filling entries for every character, craft, gadget and major storyline. Every character from the Dark Knight's world catalogued and then some,more added ones that were not even heard of. If you have the slightest presumption that you are a Batman buff then this exhaustive guide is a dream come true for you readers. As it says on the front "the ultimate guide to the man behind the mask, and the mythology behind the man". This is all about him his origins, his friends, his enemies all the secret identities revealed nothing left per chance all presented in alphabetical order easy to find character by their real names and then if that's not enough by their character names this is an encyclopaedia to envy. Perhaps it's Batman's ability to be many varied things to all men that has secured this ever lasting and ambitious epoch over 70years and still continuing after seventy years. From the pulp influence of the early years to the adventures in the 1960's Greenberger had much ground to cover he did it so magnificently, supported by excellent illustrations colour and black and white. This encyclopaedia is a chronological history of every single character that has ever appeared in Batman and all the other Bat related magazines since his very first appearance in Gotham city. From the very moment that this winged avenger of the night glided into our culture of where angels dwell and into the mind of people reading it in (1939) he has not only thrilled audiences with real-life bravery in saving from real-life troubled situsations but has also established his original place as a cowled winged Icon. Exceptional work in art and great references to other fictional storybook novels because as he said in 1939 " crimanals are supertious and cowardly lot and my disguise must be able to strike terror into their very hearts!,as a winged creature of the night, black, terrible! I shall become a bat!" and so started a story that has not ended in it,s storyline or plot and nor will it ever.
This is a very detailed book. I'm only on the second day looking at all the different entries and I'm finding more Batman related things that are really out there. The black and white sketches, with the colored sketches are amazingly beautiful. Highly recommended for any die-hard Batman fan.
This book is an essential for the serious Batman reader. It explores everything in this pop icon's comics mythos up until the disappearance of Bruce Wayne. Due note however that it does not cover Batman's big screen or small screen incarnations, simply the comic book lore. This encyclopedia can also help you if you find yourself getting lost with all the Grant Morrison current revampment of the character's past (i.e., you will be able to sort throught the source material he's borrowed from). I highly recommend this book!!!
It's not the best compendium out there, but it is really great as an encyclopedia. The book is soft cover which makes it a little flimsy compared to others, but it's also very thick and contains a lot of great information.
By far a very inclusive detail oriented encyclopedia about the Batman mythos, which is also to say a very enjoyable read to those who love Batman and wish to learn more. Although there are small details missing or incorrect, it is not of major consequence as only an extreme Batman fan would catch it.

I purchased this book for a Batman fan for their birthday and he was extremely happy with it. I looked at it prior to giving it him and it has a lot of information in it and some neat pictures. I think anyone could really learn some things about Batman, no matter how big of a fan you are!
This was a gift for my boyfriend. He loved it, and it gives him things to talk about with the children he works with (mostly boys).
