"Sword and Scimitar: Fourteen Centuries of War Between Islam and the West" By Raymond Ibrahim (Aug. 2018) w/ 16 pages of b/w drawings of discussed battles. [This review by Col. William Garrison, USA (Ret.)]The subject matter of this book is pretty well encapsulated by Victor Hanson who wrote the Foreword to this book:"Sword and Scimitar is a much-needed history of landmark battles between Islam and the West. Ibrahim offers eight representative engagements … from France to the Middl East, and over a millennium from 636 to 1683.This book "is first and foremost riveting military history. It offers blow-by-blow concise accounts of the eight battles, and interprets them in the context of the times -- or rather, takes seriously what contemporary leaders claimed were their intentions and how they worked out their strategies..... the book advances larger cultural and religious arguments"..."he has selected four exemplary Western defeats (the fall of Constantinople, Hattin, Manzikert, and Yarmuk) balanced by four victories (second defense of Constantinople, La Naas de Tolosa, Tours, and Vienna). ...Ibrahim's evidence reveals certain recurring themes about the interaction between Islam and the West...."First, in most cases Islamic armies saw themselves as expansionary and messianic.... Second, while there were localized and intramural political and tribal rivalries, Muslim armies went to war against the West more often as religious rather than as national or ethnic forces.... Third, Ibrahim sees continuity between past and present; that is, Muslim religious leaders and jihadists have characteristically seen Christianity as both antithetical to the Islamic world and inherently ripe for conquest or conversion" (p. viii - ix). This book is much more than just some military-school analysis of various Middle Age battles that will be appreciated only by infantry officers attempting to discover some obscure, medieval envelopment movements and apply them to the Vietnam War or the current "War On Terrorism" battles occurring throughout the Middle East today. What is unique and informative about Ibrahim's important book is that he analyzes "that there [is] a much larger but wholly forgotten backstory to this … military history, the recollection of which can revolutionize the way the West understand its past, and thus its present, with Islam" (p. xiii).Ibrahim notes how many (leftist) commentators today whitewash jihad terrorism as legitimate warfare against modern states that were birthed from European colonialism. Ibrahim observed: "Even among less ideologically charged historians, the macrocosmic significance of the aforementioned millennium, when "Christian Europe was under constant threat from Islam," is unintelligible. They talk of "Arab," "Moorish," "Ottoman," or "Tartar" -- rarely Islamic -- invasions and conquests, even though the selfsame rational -- jihad -- impelled those otherwise diverse people to assault the West."Ibrahim offers "the most timely aspect of this book. It definitively answers one of the most pressing questions of our time: Are militant Muslims -- aka "terrorists," "radicals," "extremists" -- being true to Islam, as they insist, or are they "hijacking" it for their own agendas, as we are told?"Ibrahim contends that this book "unlike most military histories -- which no matter how fascinating are ultimately academic -- this one offers timely correctives: it sets the much distorted historical record between the two civilizations straight and, in so doing, demonstrates once and for all that Muslim hostility for the West is not an aberration but a continuation of Islamic history" (p. xvii).Besides discussing the relevance to today of his selected medieval battles, Ibrahim also briefly discusses the Muslim Ottoman attacks in the Balkans during the 1870s.Ibrahim also opines that the attacks upon Europeans today by Muslim "refugees" fleeing from war-torn Muslim lands are less about fleeing than actually spearheading a new Islamic-jihad invasion of an essentially ignorant European populace to the menace of the Muslims' "right or straight path" (sirat al-Mustaqim) of wanting to convert Europeans to Islam rather than integrate themselves with the liberal and permissive West.[For a more expansive view of the great multitude of Muslim battles against non-Muslims see: "The History of Jihad: from Muhammad to ISIS" by Robert Spencer (Aug. 2018), and "The Islam in Islamic Terrorism: The Importance of Beliefs, Ideas, and Ideology" by Ibn Warraq (May 2017).

Mr. Ibrahim is a foremost authority on Islam and its history. He pulls no punches with this one.He goes into gory detail regarding the many atrocities committed by Islam from Muhammad down to the present.8 major conflicts are outlined: Yarmuk, The Siege of Constantinople in 717, Tours, Manzikert, Hattin, Las Navas de la Tolosa, The Final Siege of Constantinople in 1453, The Siege of Vienna, and more.It would be safe to assume that most have never heard of these pivotal battles. It could easily be argued that the victories at Tours and Vienna saved Western Civilization from currently being Islamic.Mr. Ibrahim goes into some unsettling detail about the horrible and ghastly tortures the Turks and other Muhammadans used against Christendom. Here are some excerpts:Did you know that skinning alive was a popular method of execution that was used on the commander of Famagusta in Cyprus in 1571 and the Serbian Orthodox bishop?.Did you know the army that invaded Europe during the siege of Vienna in 1683 numbered 300,000?. This was an incredible army to muster in the late 17th c.That blonde-haired and blue-eyed women were the most valued prize in the Arab slave markets, and Viking raids were elicited by this demand?.That in 1785, the Mahometan Barbary pirates captured two American ships, the Dauphin and Maria, and enslaved and paraded the crew through the streets?.That the Muslims knew about the New World since the 1500's and had "pious hopes that it would, in due course, be illuminated by Islam and added to the Ottoman realm"?The book also has 8-pages of pictures, photos, and notes in the center as an added bonus.I could go on and on with the fascinating history in this book. It is difficult to put down. Get this book and you will not be disappointed. For those with libraries on Islam and its true history, Robert Spencer's latest very popular work and Paul Fregosi's oldie but goodie "Jihad in the West" are volumes that complement Mr. Ibrahim's latest book, which I would give 6 stars if I could.

It will make you sick what mankind has suffered due to Islam's jihad as decreed by Mohammad. This book documents jihad through 8 major battles from 632 AD through 1683 at the gates of Vienna. Killing, torture, raping, etc. are the result of Islam's following the Koran's command to kill or oppress the infidels.Read it and open your eyes. Then read "The History of Jihad" by Robert Spencer to fill in the gaps.

Alarmingly apposite and engaging. Raymond Ibrahim hits the proverbial nail on the head with this strikingly important work. His writing style is palatable and ripe for mass consumption. I’d strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding Christian-Islamic relations throughout history.Too many in the West remain perilously ignorant about true Islamic principles such as taqiyya, law of abrogation, etc. I’d recommend this book to anyone high school age older. If I could give it a six-star rating I would.

Democracy Betrayed: The Rise of the Surveillance Security State

Review

Praise for Democracy Betrayed"Keller charts the growth of what he calls "Secure Democracy," a security state with the outward trappings of a free society but one that, since 9/11, has been ever more intrusive and manipulative, especially in the misrepresentation of facts concerning the dangers of terrorism...Keller makes a spirited case for preferring untrammeled freedom to managed and monitored safety."—Kirkus"This tightly written book [is] a useful reference for a timely topic." ―Winnipeg Free Press“Many Americans believe that they are the beneficiaries, rather than the potential victims, of government surveillance. Those who have nothing to hide, goes the saying, have nothing to fear. In this important book, William Keller shows how naive this view is. The political philosopher Thomas Hobbes observed that the purpose of knowledge is power. And, having acquired vast knowledge about us, our government us in a position to exercise vast power over us.” —Benjamin Ginsberg, author of What Washington Gets Wrong and Professor of Political Science, Johns Hopkins University“For many years now, William W. Keller has been one of the most talented and insightful writers on questions of security and liberty, beginning with his study in the 1980s on J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. He continues on with this marvelous new work on the rise of Big Brother in the United States. Keller writes smoothly, researches exhaustively, and cares deeply about both the factual and normative dimensions of public policy. The result in Democracy Betrayed is a book worth reading from cover-to-cover, for within its pages reside reliable information on the elusive topic of national security, along with thoughtful prescriptions on how to fight against America's slide toward an ever intrusive surveillance society.” —Dr. Loch K. Johnson, author of A Season of Inquiry Revisited: The Church Committee Confronts America’s Spy AgenciesPraise for Arm in Arm: Political Economy of the Global Arms Trade:"All the attention given to the proliferation of nuclear weapons has led statesmen to overlook a crucial point: it is the spread of conventional weapons and military technology that is actually undermining international stability today...William Keller has successfully drawn upon his deep knowledge of both economics and technology to reveal and explain the complex pressures leading to the spread of arms. A Washington 'insider,' his account is highly topical and, indeed, fascinating." —Andrew J. Pierre, Senior Associate, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and author of The Global Politics of Arms Sales"William Keller has delineated with frightening clarity the coming crisis for world order: the accelerating global commerce in arms...This new 'cold war' is potentially more dangerous than the old one since the major governments are themselves promoting the arms trade in the name of market shares. Keller has sounded an important alarm. In candor, he is not confident that government will heed it." —William Greider, National Editor, Rolling Stone"Keller's book explains why, despite the fact that most American oppose profligate arms exports, they keep on happening...A rational yet passionate tour de force." —Ann Markusen, Rutgers University“Here is a jeremiad that transcends partisanship, nationalism, internationalism, and pacifism. Keller provides final and definitive validation of Marx's observation that events and personalities in world history repeat themselves—the first time as tragedy, the second as farce." —Theodore J. Lowi, John L. Senior Professor of American Institution, Cornell University“An important subject, an intelligent book." —Les Gelb, President, Council on Foreign RelationsPraise for The Myth of the Global Corporation:"The activities of multinational corporations now have an important impact on a full range of key public policies. Questions relating to how and where multinationals develop new technologies, how they trade and invest, and how they finance themselves are more important then ever. In our fast-changing world, the national interest can only realistically be conceived and defended if we understand that important differences remain in the way corporations based in the United States, Europe, and Asia operate. This excellent and meticulously researched book explodes many of the myths currently surrounding the word 'globalization.' It is essential reading for business leaders and policymakers alike." —Senator John D. Rockefeller IV “The Myth of the Global Corporation provides the most authoritative and detailed information available today on the governance, finance, innovation systems, and strategic behavior of today's multinational firms. It demonstrates how deeply embedded U.S., European (mainly German), and Japanese multinationals are in both their national institutional and cultural environments." —Alfred D. Chandler, Jr., Harvard Business School“This is an important contribution to scholarship on the multinational firm and the subject of international political economy. It will go far to correct the prevalent idea in popular and academic thinking that the multinational corporation has become an autonomous actor in international economic affairs." —Robert Gilpin, Princeton University“With astonishing naiveté, some analysts and many policymakers have assumed that globalization is homogenizing corporate structures and debilitation the state. The Myth of the Global Corporation demonstrates how false this belief is even in an area, the multinational corporation, where global forces were perceived by some as overwhelming. This book is a major contribution to our empirical and conceptual understanding of the contemporary world." —Stephen D. Krasner, Stanford UniversityPraise for Hitting First: Preventative Force in U.S. Security Policy:"Hitting First breaks new ground in exposing political and semantic manipulations on the road to war in Iraq, the dumbing-down of threat 'imminence,' the covering up of internal dissent, skill in pulling certitude from uncertainly, and success in controlling the public case for war. Iran's new prominence as a possible target for American-Israeli first strikes make all this particularly prescient and timely." —Thomas L. Hughes, former Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research"As an invaluable dissection of the theory and practice of preventive war, this book is an important guide to understanding past misguided uses of preventive force and to asking the right questions before the next time it is used." —Paul R. Pillar, former National Intelligence Officer for the Near East and South Asia"Provides an excellent framework for thoughtful deliberation by policymakers, scholars, and citizens." —Robert Hariman, Northwestern University“Hitting First locates a principal source of the preventive war against Iraq in the national 'discourse failure' surrounding the decision to go to war—rather than only in the intelligence failure concerning Iraq's WMD and the influence of the neoconservatives." —Seyom Brown, Brandeis University“A very thoughtful and provocative collection on the U.S. policy of preemption and preventive war, drawing in a wide range of history and legal philosophy, but focused closely on today's events." —George Quester, University of Maryland

The United Stats internally hosts 17 intelligence agencies under the umbrella known as the Security Industrial Complex. They are also known for redundancy, complexities, mismanagement and waste. This "secret state" occupies 10,000 facilities across the U.S. Over the past five years the total funding budget exceeded half a trillion dollars.President Bush and his advisors campaigned against terror but favored invading Iraq because it was a nation that "harbored terrorists, possessed weapons of mass destruction, and might act against the U.S."... This oft repeated rhetoric was a broad dissemination of disinformation preparatory to the invasion of Iraq. The eventual result was 175,000 civilian deaths, desecrated cultural artifacts, a culture destroyed, financial devastation, and malnutrition among the children. Iraq is a nation of 36 million people.Military security and internal security resources overlap in the prosecution of the "global war on terror". When the U.S. and the former Soviet Unionwere in competition for global hegemonic superiority their combined production of nuclear weapons was in the tens of thousands. This buffoonery was doubtless unrelated to security or military analytics but was likely related to financial influences of the Military Industrial Complex combined with the very powerful lobbying arm of the nuclear industry. What of fissile material? Yes, some 27 different countries maintain inventories of fissionable matter which is of some concern to observers because of the potential for theft and use in a suicide mission or in the sabotage of a nuclear reactor.Readers may find the author's one-sided narrative on the Second Amendment (page 151) perhaps the most contentious section of the entire manuscript as he opines that the Amendment "does not protect or defend the rights of citizens". It enables "lone wolf terror" and perpetuatesviolence and murder not found in any other democracy". Oh My! Oh My!Australia and Britain are both democracies but their crime rates have soared since the '90's when public officials proceeded to disarm the respective citizenries through confiscation and prohibition of firearms. Violence and crime continue to favor criminals who easily acquire black market weapons to be used against unarmed prey.Institutionalized rhetoric declaring that only government authority should be armed then the temptation for tyranny over society will prevail. Do most readers prefer to hitch their destinies to our venerable Second Amendment or rather put their trust in the promises and goodwill of government treachery?

This book really gave me a lens on the world of secret government surveillance. Keller is an extremely knowledgable and thought-provoking writer. Democracy Betrayed explains how our privacy and freedom is threatened by the build up of a security state within the state. And it's not only America, but democracy is also threatened in the major European states--the United Kingdom, France, and Germany--as they implement programs to counter terrorism. This book offers new perspectives on the threat of terrorism and how to address it.

Page 56 has a statement at the end of a paragraph stating we should direct our anger at Snowden: it is incongruent with the theme of both paragraphs and it seems as if the publishers altered the original manuscript. I am interested to know how the end of the paragraph actually ends.

Democracy Betrayed gives clear insight into the history and anatomy of our nation's Intelligence Community and the power and scope of its reach. The size and cost of this effort are carefully delineated as are the actual and potential dangers and benefits to our liberal democracy. It is must reading for all who teach, write or set policy in the IC arena, and the documentation is superb. Keller has at last put international terrorism and its local counterparts in perspective and offers a constructive lens through which these horrors can be analyzed. He teaches no more 'crying wolf' politics, frequently at great cost to our freedom, when the actual risks can be understood and measured. Regardless of your political stripes, you will find that you are better informed and think more clearly about events after reading Keller's work.

William Keller's book presents a brilliant analysis of the dimensions and delusions of America's intelligence complex. The author's expertise, inside and outside government, makes his descriptions and conclusions compelling and important.
