But as Ms. Gibson so aptly demonstrates, the Caribbean is not a mere footnote of history: it has been a geographic vortex of superpower entanglement and a crossroad of globalism for over half a millennium.Ms. Gibson creates a lively narrative supercharged with facts, but none offered gratuitously. I knew I was in for a treat as the introduction began with an anecdote about a decapitated statute still standing in a park in Fort-de-France, Martinique. We learn that the statute was of Napoleon Buonaparte's first wife, who was born on the island. Many islanders believed that it was she who convinced Napoleon to reinstate slavery on this island eight years after its abolition. The book is replete with such wonderful stories of human interest and intrigue.Ms. Gibson's history is not one written in a vacuum, but is a comprehensive worldview of nations that meddled in and forged the complex fabric of the West Indies. After covering what little is know about the native inhabitants, who were all but obliterated by Europeans, her narrative takes full swing with the struggles of the European powers. The relative might of these powers ebbed and flowed like the tides, with the flux of fortunes reflected in the changing control of various islands and coastal regions in the West Indies.A generation of explorers beginning in the late fifteenth century, aided by new sailing technologies, advances in astronomy, and, imperatively, royal and private investment, set forth on a westward quest for gold, exotic spices, and other riches that eventually led them to the Caribbean. The fascinating twists and turns of geography, climate, and history, including the influx of many peoples, all so well documented by Ms. Gibson, set off a chain of events that Henry the Navigator could never have imagined.The history of the Caribbean is marred by violence and shameful disregard for human dignity. Ms. Gibson spares us no detail. But the details force the reader to acknowledge the horrific reality that marked the struggles of slaves, indentured servants, and others who have been exploited by those in search of fortune. Perhaps the greatest irony of Caribbean history is that the quixotic search for riches eventually gave way to the harvesting of sugar cane. This "useless by-product of a breed of grass," as Ms Gibson calls it, became the virtual gold of the Caribbean.It is fascinating to discover the roster of notables throughout history who left their fingerprints on the Caribbean. From Queen Elizabeth to Oliver Cromwell; Louis XIV to Napoleon, and the latter's nemesis in the fight for Haitian independence, Toussaint Louverture, their stories are varied and fascinating. Virtually every US president left his mark on the region, starting with George Washington who fought for the British in Barbados. As Ms. Gibson sardonically remarks, British generals probably wished the future first US President would have died of the smallpox he contracted in Barbados instead of developing immunity to the disease that may have spared his life during the fight for American independence.Perhaps missing from Ms. Gibson's discussion of great historic individuals with connections to the islands is Alexander Hamilton. Born in Nevis and raised in the Caribbean, he would go on to become the primary architect of the American financial system. He was indisputably one of the most influential world figures ever born in the West Indies, and therefore, I believe would have been worthy of mention.We learn about the intertwined relations of the Caribbean, the American British colonies, and England, and how clandestine commerce with the islands weighed heavily in the outcome of events leading to American independence. The relationship between the Caribbean and the fledgling Republic altered drastically over time as US influence in the region and the world grew exponentially. Armed with the Monroe Doctrine, the pretext of defending American national interests, and supposedly, the islanders right to freedom from foreign interference, was a thin disguise for what the US wanted: geographic positioning, the exploitation of natural and human resources, and trade policies that favored American interests. In other words, the prize of dominance in the region had changed little from the days of European hegemony.Imperialism in the West Indies takes an interesting twist in the twenty-first century. Trade wars that once centered around mercantilism and piracy primarily involving the age-old commodities of sugar and rum more recently have triggered WTO actions, as private and public entities fight in international courts for lucrative shares of these and other commodity markets, particularly bananas. Of even more recent interest, Ms. Gibson discusses the posturing of the United States and China in the West Indies. On this development she notes, "As the axis of global power begins to tilt to the east, The Caribbean islands still find themselves in a strategic position."The islands share common themes, such as slavery, disease, corruption and natural disasters, but Ms. Gibson describes meticulously the individual trajectories that the islands and Caribbean coastal regions followed, giving each a distinctive history. Not surprisingly, the circumstances and prosperity of islands vary significantly today. From what Ms. Gibson calls the relative egalitarianism, albeit impoverished circumstances, of Cuba, to the extreme poverty of Haiti with its man-made buffer zone for cruise ships, she covers the uniqueness of history and culture that lead to the present day individuality of the territories and countries of the West Indies.Ms. Gibson deals extensively with the histories of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica. But many other islands, even the small and seemingly insignificant, warrant her mention, rendering her perspective particularly comprehensive. Thus we learn of the heyday of gangsters and nightclubs in Havana, and of the slave uprisings and brutal reprisals in Hispaniola, but we also discover the story of the violent volcanic eruptions that rocked the tiny island of Saint Vincent in the Lesser Antilles.The scope of this book is breathtaking: Ms. Gibson does not seem to miss a single beat. From the voyages of Christopher Columbus to the modern sounds of reggae, she covers the array of culture, peoples, and events, both natural and man-made, that have molded the texture of this region. She captures admirably how the tides of fortune vacillated as wars, disease, natural calamities, and money continually changed the balance of power in the region and on individual islands.Most who visit the West Indies may have little interest in knowing anything about the region other than where to find the most exquisite beaches and best hotels. But I believe everyone who enjoys the natural beauty and man-made comforts of this region would be well served to learn more about the complex culture, people, geography, and history of the region. Perhaps Caribbean cruise ships should consider leaving a copy of Ms. Gibson's masterful history in every cabin. Even a mere perusal of this book could be a significant eye-opener for the less informed into the broader vistas of the West Indies.

I have mixed feelings about the book. I bought this book to read about Caribbean history before visiting some of the islands. I was hoping for a sense of what brought the islands to where they are today and what underlies their culture. Unfortunately, the book was not well-suited for that purpose.The Good: On the one hand, I absolutely commend the author for her knowledge of the topic and her research. The book is amazingly well researched and the author's knowledge of the topic is impressive. If you are looking for a vast collection of facts about the different islands, then this book will serve you well.The Bad: On the other hand, the book lacks a usable narrative format to make the information presented useful. It comes across a bit like someone listing everything they know rather than someone telling the story of the islands -- it is very linear. For example, the book outlines the names of leaders and how the demographics of the islands changed (skipping from island to island), but it presents little in the way of what life was like, how the islands functioned politically or culturally, or any of the usual colorful events that make history so interesting. There are also fascinating tantalizing moments, but the book doesn't exploit them. For example, it mentions the Founding Fathers of America visiting the islands and getting their gunpowder through the islands, but the book doesn't address this on a personal level nor does it explain how this might have affected the history of the two regions. This is too bad because I suspect this author has the knowledge to tell a much deeper, richer story than that normally presented in history courses.Again this is not a bad book. It is very informative and quite an impressive feat. But it is a difficult read which may not provide what you are looking for if you are hoping for insight rather than facts.

There is a need for this informative book as the history of the Caribbean is so interrelated with the history of the American South. This book explains how all of the islands are connected to so many different countries. I enjoyed reading this book. Dr.Jack Kushner

Fascinating subject matter but the book attempts to cover too broad a scope, both in terms of time and diverse cultures. Would have appreciated a greater focus on intersections of the various European efforts to explore the region or some kind of narrative thru-line. If you thought Anderson's "Lawrence in Arabia" was well-done for that region, don't get your hopes up about this book -- it's more of a reference piece.

This is the most complete history of the Caribbean that I have ever read that wasn't a peer-reviewed or scholarly text. It is as complete and informative as a history text, yet with the easy readability or a book on current events.

This book provides a brief history of most of the area in the Carib. Which is what I was looking for. Towards the end, history gives way to facts and figures and some opinion - not as interesting, but still worth the read. Overall, I learned a few things about the area I hadn't known before.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this historical account of the settlement of the Caribbean.

Preheat oven to 250°F / 120°C. In a large bowl, mix together oats, nuts and seeds, coconut and brown sugar. 2. In a small bowl, combine honey, coconut butter, vanilla and salt. Let cool to room temperature before storing in an airtight container.   NUTRITIONAL VALUE PER SERVING: Calories: 324 | Calories from Fat: 111 | Protein: 10 g | Carbs: 45 g | Total Fat: 13 g | Saturated Fat: 4 g | Trans Fat: 0 g | Fiber: 7 g | Sodium: 49 mg | Cholesterol: 0 mg     HUEVOS RANCHEROS   Servings: 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes Huevos rancheros, which means ranch eggs in Spanish, is a classic Mexican breakfast consisting of fried eggs on fried corn tortillas topped with a tomato-chili sauce. Thats a lot of frying! Ive made my version healthier by poaching the eggs. Less fat, but all the flavor.   INGREDIENTS   1 tsp / 5 ml extra virgin olive oil 2 cups / 480 ml cooked black beans 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped ½ tsp / 2.5 ml ground cumin ½ tsp / 2.5 ml chili powder ½ tsp / 2.5 ml sea salt ¼ tsp / 1.25 ml freshly ground black pepper Eat-Clean Cooking Spray (see Supportive Recipes chapter) 8 egg whites 8 sprouted whole grain corn tortillas, 5 to 6 inches in diameter 1 cup / 240 ml Chipotle Ranchero Sauce (see recipe in Supportive Recipes chapter) 1 avocado, pitted and sliced into 12 slices Cilantro, to garnish   METHOD   1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add black beans, garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper, and cook until heated through, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and cover to keep warm. 2. Fill an egg-poaching pan with a few inches of water and place the egg poacher on pan, making sure that egg-poaching cups dont touch surface of water. Bring water to a vigorous simmer and spray each cup with Eat-Clean Cooking Spray. Pour two egg whites into each cup, cover, and poach until whites are set and cooked through, about 7 minutes. Remove egg poacher from pan of boiling water and set aside. 3. Place two tortillas, slightly overlapping, on a large plate. Spread ½ cup / 120 ml of black bean mixture over tortillas. Use a sharp knife to loosen edge of egg whites from one poaching cup, invert over beans and unmold. Or, if cups are attached to egg poacher, use a rubber spatula to scoop egg whites out and invert on black bean mixture. Spoon ¼ cup / 60 ml Chipotle Ranchero Sauce (see recipe in Supportive Recipes chapter) over egg whites, place three slices of avocado next to eggs and garnish with cilantro, if desired. I am a physician and a health nut, and I think clean eating is the only way to go. I myself have lost a ton of weight with it and really turned my life and body around. Tosca Reno is a great resource that is easy to use, and I would recommend any one of her books. This is a great edition and gives a lot of insight and recipes on managing a group of hungry picky children.

First, this disclaimer: I really like the Eat Clean way of eating, and I LOVE TO COOK and BAKE. If you dislike cooking/baking, hunting for somewhat different ingredients at health food stores; the whole adventure involved with preparing fantastic food, you probably will not enjoy this cookbook. There are ingredients I had never heard of - but am glad to know of them now. The recipes are flavorful, and fun - very, very good.The greatest thing about this cookbook is that there is one page, and one gorgeous photo to go with each recipe. It is so colorful, that it inspires you to want to try these things. I've made half the book I think, and was only disappointed with one recipe.The bad thing about the book is the binding. Cookbooks that open flat on your counter, and stay that way, are so much friendlier. This one is a thick, glossy paperback, and will not stay open without weighting it down with a cast iron pan (or something else heavy). My solution to this was to tear out each page, place the pages in see-through page protectors that are intended for 3-ring binders, and put them all in a notebook. Now I have this GREAT cookbook opened flat on the counter, easily referenced plus the pages are protected with easy wipe-off vinyl.If you've tried all the diets (and who hasn't), you may want to make one more try with this one - good, wholesome food that tastes great.

It's no secret that the average American does not eat enough vegetables, consuming too much processed food instead. Switching to a diet with limited meat and high vegetable composition has been documented to reverse a number of health aliments, including several documented cases of cancer victims reversing their condition, after being given no chance to survive by the traditional medical community. Ok, great, got that, so how do we go about getting more veggies down without gagging? "The Eat Clean Diet" is the first step in that direction, providing a number of easy, quick recipes that one would not consider without the book's reference. It's just a great way to get new ideas that turn into regular meal items to help slowly incorporate more veggies into your diet.

I love the meal plans in this book and bought this and other books by her at once for the first time! I have been following her for a short time through Robert Kennedy's Oxygen magazine. I have been clean eating for 9 weeks now, and have already lost 7.4lbs 4.5inches at the 6week mark (I wont weigh in again until I hit the 12 week mark, plus I lift weights). My whole family is eating clean and we are all seeing results as my husband has also lost 7lbs on the same 6wk mark and my children are doing MUCH better at school since they are nutritionally content therefore focusing better! I recommended this to a friend of mine who doesnt have time to workout and she has only been doing it for 1 week and has lost 3lbs! You won't be disappointed! :)

Great easy recipes. I use them for weekend fun cooking knowing that I don't have to totally cheat my diet and still eat a healthier option. That way I don't eat things pizza, burgers, wings, or other bad comfort foods.

This book is a good, basic book for people new to the Clean Eating lifestyle. The recipes are easy to follow, though lacking some flavor.The Clean Eating magazine cookbooks are much better, in my opinion, if you like interesting and bold flavors that will impress your family and your friends.In a normal cookbook, I mark about 60% of the recipes for sampling and with this book, I only marked about 25%. Then again, I'm a pretty experienced clean eater looking for interesting, new recipes to keep things fun and flavorful.

Emphasis on fresh foods / ingredients.

I believe I have all of Tosca Reno's books and my family and I have greatly benefited from them. Her approach to how we should be eating and living is accurate and doable. Her recipes are easy and encourage you to try foods that you never thought of eating before.

It seems to have been written for men who already have their own personal militaries. Yet most of the advice is about conquest. If they have their own personal militaries, why wouldn’t they already be experts in conquest?Someone who is already a prince would need to know about what to do after the conquest. He needs to know how to deal with his subjects and how to deal with other rulers without going to war. There should have been an entire chapter on diplomacy and international trade. The alternative to these things is destroying your own principality with perpetual war. Along these lines, after Machiavelli wrote THE PRINCE and before he published it, he wrote a small work entitled “The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca” that illustrated the importance of caution and diplomacy instead of endless conquests. The key was that princes should keep the limitations of their successors in mind when planning military campaigns. After all, princes die young sometimes.Nothing clear is presented about how a prince should deal with his subjects. A prince might need to kill them, but should leave their property and women alone. He should disarm them so they can’t overthrow him. But what if the principality is being invaded and he needs armed subjects to help him fight the invaders? Liberality is the quickest way to be despised by the subjects, but they should be given festivals and spectacles. It’s confusing and I may have missed it, but he provides no historical examples of princes that prevented unrest and those who failed to do so.What’s also confusing is what everyone focuses on when they talk about this book. I'm referring to the morality of the prince. Must he have a moral duty, breaking conventional rules only when they interfere with this duty? Or is it permissible for him to be a beast who only cares about his own pleasure and glory? I’m not sure what this book really says about that.However, THE PRINCE is a valuable early work of political science. The method is pretty good. Ideas are developed from axioms of human nature, then backed up with historical examples. It’s worth reading.2.8 stars

I often heard of this book but never read it and after reading it I am sorry I didn't pick it up sooner. Some people think that the book is cruel and calculating, but I think it is very insightful of how governments take over countries and keep their citizens in line. Some times it means killing the old administration (literally) and other times it means employing citizens in new territories that you are trying to take over. The writing wasn't convoluted at all. It was very clear and well written. This is definitely a book you can read over and over again.

A great thesis worth multiple readings. This collection of essays and letters are one man's fascinating take on politics and war. The only thing which takes away from the overall work are the appendices which try to spoon-feed conclusions as opposed to providing context for the greater work.To be able to read and understand this book correctly, you must be prepared to spend some time understanding the politics and conflicts of the time. That being said, it's the only way to do it and be able to grasp more than surface conclusions. Being able to read and understand the work changed my understanding of not just politics, but also my interactions with different groups both socially and in my work life.

The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile."The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. If you're looking for food for thought, it's here.This particular kindle edition is fairly good; the text is cleanly presented with few typographical or scanning errors, and the translator has clearly made a significant effort to present the text as accurately as possible in a modern translation, with several footnotes detailing possible alternate translations of particular words, etc. In addition to the text of _The Prince_, this edition also includes two shorter historical works by Machiavelli, "Descriptions of the Methods Adopted by the Duke Valentino When Murdering Vitellozzo Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, the Signor Pagolo, and the Duke di Gravina Orsini," and "The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca." ("Duke Valentino" is an alternate name for Cesare Borgia). Both additional texts are, in essence, case studies of how contemporary historical figures achieved success by acting according to the precepts which Machiavelli outlines in the main body of the text, and as such are very useful and interesting companion reads.As a final note, if anyone has recommendations for histories of Italy in this time period, please link me to them in a comment -- after reading this, I want to read more about the era.
