I place the countless biographies of Joan of Arc--a veritable literary industry--into two categories: those written by authors that seem to be clueless there are already countless biographies of Joan of Arc, and those written by authors aware of the flood of Joan biographies, but who justify their writing yet another biography because all the others seem to have been lacking in some way or another. In all of these cases, the same material is covered, over and over and over again: the Joan biographical sources, after all, are well known, well defined and well organized. What seems to be common with all of these biographies is a strong psychological need on the part of the author to personally relive Joan's life through writing about her. Even if the author has at least done his or her research and is aware of the hundreds of biographies already written, they still feel compelled to write yet another biography. And since she's a rockstar in the pantheon of historical figures, publishers are more than willing to ride the wave of her popularity with yet another book about her.Only a handful of the Joan biographies stand out as having actually contributed new insights and scholarship, an example being Marina Warner's classic study, as well of course the work of Régine Pernoud, the greatest Joan of Arc scholar. I'm giving Castor's work five stars not because it breaks any new ground, but rather because she recasts Joan's life firmly within the backdrop of her historical milieu, indeed much of the book is historical background that is directly related to better understanding Joan's significance. What comes of this is that we learn that Joan, as being a female warrior, is not a coincidence, but rather can be understood in the context of the particular historical moment that engendered her (pun intended).Castor clearly has invested a good deal of effort into writing this book, but it is curious as being yet another example of satisfying this insatiable need of reliving Joan's life through literary writing.

Helen Castor is one of my favorite historians and she is an excellent writer. There is much to like about this new biography of Joan The Maid. The author's understanding and explanation of the last 1/3rd of the Hundred Years War is deft and readable. However, I would really have liked to hear more about Joan herself. Seeing Joan as she probably appeared to her contemporaries is a really interesting approach. However, the "condemnation trial" (which convicted Joan of heresy) and the later "nullification trial" (which reversed the original conviction) should have been covered in more depth, with more direct quotations and analysis. Both trials were given too short shrift, in my opinion. Placing Joan within the historical context in which she acted is important, of course, but the course of the war was given too much emphasis, I feel, which didn't leave enough book for a thorough exploration of the records of the two trials. What questions did the judges ask? What answers did Joan give? Which questions did she refuse to answer and why? These things were sketched in in a shallow sort of way that conveyed little by way of information and analysis and it definitely left this reader somewhat unsatisfied. I did enjoy reading the book overall, although I do wish for more on Joan specifically.

Back in high school in the 1950s our senior English class read G.B. Shaw's play "Saint Joan" and two other books (names now forgotten) focusing on the trial and the religious/theological issues, as I remember the books today. This is not that sort of book. The title, "Joan of Arc: A History," is somewhat misleading. It is actually not a history of Joan per se, but rather of her time, the political (power) struggles of the day, and her place and role therein. The time is pre-nationstate, and if you're not familiar with details of the warring royal families and factions, it's a little easy to get lost from time to time, as I did. The book could have benefited from multiple really good maps. However, putting that aside, for those who are interested in the historical Joan, such as we can know about her, I recommend this book. It's well written and a "relatively" easy read.

Mark Twain observed that the Maid of Orléans was "easily and by far the most extraordinary person the human race has ever produced." And there is something electrifying about this teenage shepherdess as she leaves her fields to raise her white banner, break the siege of Orléans (and the English will) in order to lead Charles VII to his coronation at Reims and on to Paris. What makes this biography so captivating is Castor's deft touch. She cleverly spends a large portion up front explaining the Armagnac-Burgundian civil war and the complicated events that have taken place since Henry V's invasion and his stunning victory at Agincourt. By the time the maid arrives on the scene, the stage is set and the future of France looks bleak. Castor's narrative is spare, and she continuously weaves in the context that illuminates Joan's actions. The most gripping part of the book is experiencing Joan's supreme will to succeed as she lifts the siege of Orléans, specifically when a British archer shoots her in the neck from the safety of the walls of the the Tourelles, only to see Joan rise from the ground and remove the arrow in order to raise her standard and urge her comrades on. Good stuff. But aside from the wonderful historical touch and the spare, undramatic prose, what sets Castor's work apart is her discussion of Joan as a girl — a maid who wore men's clothing in order to fight and ride and in order to to prevent sexual assault. A girl who was charged with and ultimately tried for heresy because she dared to don men's clothes and a suit of armor. A very young peasant girl who stepped into the arena of national power and brutal warfare and was able to command and lead the men of France in that milieu. A remarkable girl. And Castor's narrative gives her life. Highly recommended.

This book is a masterful history of tap. He weaves together so much: the roots of dances from slavery in America, Irish clubbing, early Blackface minstrel shows, actual Black minstrel shows and a whole array of dancers. He focuses on the art of Henri Cole, the Nicolas brothers, Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, Gregory Hines and Savion Glover and many, many others. Seibert is a dance critic for the New York Times and "What the Eye Hears" reflects that fact. Astaire and Rogers remain at the pinnacle. Gene Kelly not so much. He seems taken back by Glover, greatness mixed with - at times - a bad attitude. He lauds what is available on YouTube, as I sit back and watch perfection -- Astaire and Powell tapping to Cole Potter's "Begin the Beguine." For anyone who loves dance, this book is an essential. One other plus: the photographs are amazing.

What the Eye Hears: a History of Tap Dancing by Brian Seibert (2015, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, hard bound, 624 pages with photos: $23Fascinating, well-written fun (and jargon-free), Seibert’s definitive history and informed consideration about percussive dance offers more than its subtitle promises. Percussive dance found stages in minstrelsy, revue, vaudeville, jazz clubs, musical comedy, movies and television; in writing about tap, Brian Seibert places it within social history and show business. And much of what he tells us as a fellow tapper, dance reviewer and chronicler is not only how the eye hears but how we who attend dance respond to what we see and hear as our muscles and tendons contract, expand and nearly stomp and soar. In my opinion, this book is also a caution to those who are merely academic theorists: if you can’t do it, don’t know it in your bones and heart: don’t try to write about it.What the Eye Hears is one big bargain of a book, in quality and quantity. I would not be surprised to find the publishers raising the price following this initial offering.Frank Cullen; co-founder of American Vaudeville Museum; author of Vaudeville,Old & New: an Encyclopedia of Variety Performers in America

A much welcomed addition to the still scant historical literature on tap dance. Seibert is not only a dance critic but is a tap dancer himself. He has not only immersed himself in the art's history but is able to apply his own critical insight to those developments in the form that he has witnessed.

A big book. I assumed in 600 or so pages that a book about tap dance would have clattered on and on about Gene Kelly, but no. Kelly gets scant mention and -- guess what? -- Brian Seibert is right. It was an eye opener. This book is populated by long lost names and talents. Do yourself a favor, read the book with YOUTUBE close by. There are snippets all over of these great folks (Peg Leg Bates -- yes, a one-legged tap dancer who started before radio and was still dancing on the Ed Sullivan and Dean Martin shows).I am thrilled to have gone through this book, glad to have seen my eyes open to the real history of tap

I am only half way through this book and I'd thought I'd take a break and write a short review. What the Eye Hears is an astonishing work of scholarship and even better a remarkably entertaining read. More importantly it's a timely piece of scholarship that brings perspective to not only the art of tap, but to how oppressed people blend their cultures through the language of art...in this case tap dancing. On one level Seibert is telling us the untold story of America, a theme I did not expect to find in a book about tap dancing. This book isn't a fog of facts so don't be put off by its length. It's a good read, full of humor, joy and triumph. This is one book I'll read twice.

I've just started the book, so it's a bit early to give an overall rating, but I like it so far and loved learning about the shim sham. It may be the "national anthem of tap dancing" as the author says but I hadn't heard of it before. Went on Youtube and am starting to learn it.

This is a masterpiece but an easy read for it really is the encyclopedia of the history of tap dancing. Makes you want to watch old tap dance movies and get yourself up and tap.

Great gift for the tapper who likes to know their history.Well written.

The Shark’s Paintbrush is an excellent read that intersperses insights from the world of design inspired by nature with stories of the natural world drawn from the authors personal experience. I found this personalization provided terrific context for why he is so passionate about biomimicry and bio-inspired design, bringing the ideas contained in it to life, as well as making the book particularly readable. The book kicks off with a pretty comprehensive tour of what can be achieved from a biomimetic approach to problem solving, drawing on both 'classic' examples of biomimicry as well as sharing cutting edge examples that were completely new, to me at least. The section on fluid dynamics, and how nano and micro vortices can create quite surprising efficiencies in fluid and air flow was particularly fascinating, and started to finally hint at why a bumble can fly, when I believe classic calculations suggest that it is an aerodynamic impossibility. Sometimes evolution is so efficient that it designs executions that far outstrip even our most sophisticated models. The next part of the book focuses more on the challenges facing entrepreneurs and biomimicists wanting to translate their ideas and prototypes to market. While not applicable to me personally, I found this a fascinating ‘walk a mile in my shoes’ exercise. The later chapters explore how the study of nature can help us to understand systems and processes, and how natures inherent efficiency can act as a model for sustainable innovation. Its hard to overstate how important a concept that is.All in all an informative, engaging and inspiring book that nicely melds an extremely important and useful topic with the experiences of an interesting individual

Not only is this a well-written, highly readable introduction to the wealth of innovations found in nature that would benefit our world, it's also one of the best overviews of the challenges of change dynamics within established industries. The sweep of the potential that understanding and application of the natural world's designs and approaches has for improving the effectiveness of many of our commercial/industrial designs and tools is astounding. How innovations are accepted and incorporated, however, is a long and winding road. Any and all aspiring entrepreneurs in the industrial space should read this, especially the last section of the book. Harman has captured the experience of entrepreneurs, whether they go the "self-financing/grants/angel" route, or venture capitalists. The writing style is unpretentious, clear, engaging, and any reader will gather take-aways of real significance.

The Shark's Paintbrush: Biomimicry and How Nature is Inspiring Innovation by Jay HarmonThis book is about the business opportunities in transfering inventions from the natural world to the manufacturing world. The majority of the book details brilliant inventions based on things evolved by nature. But hanging over every cool invention is the failure to implement it in a profitable way with wide distribution. When you read about these inventions you will want to buy them, you'll wish they existed because of the good they could do the planet in terms of energy savings, efficiency, and simplicity. Then you'll get really fed up of hearing how venture capitalists and greedy conventional industrialists scuppered these brilliant inventions and inspiring young companies. Getting a paradigm shift past the guardians of the status quo is clearly super difficult. Just because you have a superior product doesn't mean you win market share. From a quiet, low energy, super efficient bathroom extractor fan to an organic shaped watercraft these products sound so wonderful.Sadly this is not the first time a brilliant inventor has suffered at the hands of investors, his scientific peers, and the world of manufacturing: Viktor Schauberger went through all this at the beginning of the twentieth century as detailed in the book Hidden Nature: The Startling Insights of Viktor Schauberger by Bartholomew and Bellamy. So I recommend The Sharks Paintbrush as a fascinating read.

Great book! What a fun and informative read. Jay is one of the very few people who have actually applied the principles of Biomimicry to create a successful product. Not only that, but he has taken the time to share his lessons on getting there! It's an enjoyable read on many levels. First, he takes us on an engaging adventure into Australian nature--a youth spent observing the way things REALLY work, after millions (and billions) of years of evolution. You get to go behind the scenes--how nature helped him make it through a difficult childhood, and how he became inspired by what he saw, enough to design something that could make the world a better place for every species on Earth. His stories are funny and engaging. Then, Jay shows us just how hard––and frustrating––it is to go from a great idea to a successful product. If you want to know what mistakes to avoid, this is the book! Jay is a fighter, and always retains his wit and humor. Great read, and highly recommended!

Quite disappointing. I bought this book after waiting through pre-production for it to be availabel for the kindle. The book is more (i.e. mostly) about the authors struggles in the world of Venture Capitalism to get his Biomimicry business going (interesting but not what i wanted/expected). Far to much me me me for my liking, I was hoping for a book about biomimicry, not a book about how to start a biomimicry business using VC. Judging by the amount of time he spends referencing Janine Benyus' book, I am guessing that will have a lot more relevant material. if you're looking for a book that has a basic introduction to the precepts of biomimicry this is just ok, but if you want pure detail about biomimicry, then Benyrus would be far more useful.

I'm halfway through the book, and I'm loving it. I wish I had read this when I was beginning college (I was a mechanical engineering major). Definitely would recommend this book to anyone, regardless of age or profession!
