Purchased to begin piano lessons with my 5th child (age 5, recently learned to read words). Have used John Thompson's beginner books previously. (The one with the little monsters on them - books 1 and 2). Bought this because at the end of Thompson 1st grade book with other children, the jump to 2nd grade book seemed rather high, so I use Schaum's Blue book (B) for some of my kids and Thompson 2nd grade for others, depending on skill/preference. Decided to start the 5th child with both Schaum and Thompson books from the start.Great beginning lessons.Begins with learning finger numbers and 6 short melodies (copied from teacher's example playing). Learns the melodies without staff or note names. Note names added next, then staff added last. These melodies use all 5 fingers in each hand, but hands are played separately.Next song after this repetitive 6 mini-songs uses some of 5 fingers (notes middle C through E in right hand) and progresses back up. So far, we like it a lot and seemed easier to begin than Thompson, but the Thompson does a better transition of slowly explaining note values (whole, half, quarter) and position on staff. (one note value at a time, then one note at a time). Will be using both together, but this could totally be used by itself also.

Over the years I have used many piano method series with my students. I find that the John W. Schaum Pre-A is still a go-to resource. It begins with one page of very simple letter pieces which introduce the idea of up and down and steps and skips. Next notes are introduced from middle C outward. I recommend using correction fluid or tape to cover the finger numbers, especially with the younger students. This allows them to play the pieces using other finger combinations, and it eliminates reliance on the numbers rather than observing note placement and direction. Once the student has strong finger arches (some have this almost immediately), doing some pieces with careful attention to the indicated fingering will help develop the student's ability to follow fingerings when needed. The pieces are short and often a bit humorous.

I am teaching with this for the first time coupled with Teaching Little Fingers to Play with a boy for whom none of my favourite primer books was working. They work well together, and since there are fewer fingering marks, I often use it after or along with a similar lesson in the Thompson book. I am following the suggestion of a colleague who uses these two books together regularly to build good reading skills. I'm not big on the middle C approach as a rule, so no five stars, but I think it's a great fit for certain students. I think that, like math, there is no one primer book that is perfect for every beginner regardless of a teacher's abilities and since I am very big on getting kids to read music well I always look for something that helps each student succeed.

Good young beginner Piano Book. I use Schaum for younger students 7-9 yrs old. Older than that I just start with either the Schaum Book A or the John Thompson 1st Grade book. Both are good and have their own advantages. Schaum is a little easier to use, Thompson better for really bright students as it tends to be a little harder and moves forward faster.

I started teaching my children piano and this book was suggested by my piano-teaching mother as a starting point. Simple and straight forward text with teacher helps and student aids, this book is a great way to begin. I love teaching out of it and my kids love learning and playing from it.

I'm past 40 and this is what I used to take piano. I've used this to teach my nephews and they love it. The songs are soo cute and the instructions are easy. A great course to motivate little kids.

The OP-1 is an ostensibly user-friendly device, with a lot of features and capabilities, but Teenage Engineering's reference materials don't really explain how to get into it and achieve a work-flow (although their YouTube content is pretty comprehensive.) This volume is a corrective to that, and it got me through my initial bafflement and into productivity. It's been translated from Japanese, so there are the occasional lapses in precision, but not enough to compromise the essential content.

After going through the original manual online, it was really nice to get this additional information. It is a nice collection that digs a bit deeper than the actual owner's manual.

This guide has everything you need. I think this works best as a pocket guide to solve your doubts. If you're starting with the op-1 i'd recommend you to tweak the op-1 a lot and consult every doubt within this guide, you'll eventually mange the Op-1 without hesitation.

About the Author

Dr. Nicole Forsgren does research and strategy at Google Cloud following the acquisition of her startup DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) by Google. She is best known for her work measuring the technology process and as the lead investigator on the largest DevOps studies to date. She has been an entrepreneur, professor, sysadmin, and performance engineer. Nicole's work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals. Nicole earned her PhD in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona, and is a Research Affiliate at Clemson University and Florida International University. She lives in San Francisco, CA. Jez Humble is co-author of The DevOps Handbook, Lean Enterprise, and the Jolt Award-winning Continuous Delivery. When I originally posted my review, I said that I would be glad to amend or even delete it based upon my concerns being answered or their being shown to be incorrect. One of the authors, Jez Humble, took the time to respond to me. I still have some lesser concerns but I am satisfied by his response. There was peer review of the research and DORA was not formed until after the research had been submitted for review. Since I was wrong about those points, I have upgraded my rating and have revised my review which starts in the next paragraph.Note that I make no claim to be as skilled when it comes to research as is Forsgren. Hands down, she has an impressive resume and experience which makes me look like what you scrape off the bottom of your shoe in comparison. When I approach this book and the research, I am concerned regarding the use of Snowball research. However, I recognize how hard it is to conduct research in the workplace and the so-called "real world" outside the laboratory. When reading this book, my main point would be to keep in mind what the authors openly say, to their credit, that the research presented does not lead itself to predictive or causal analysis. However, it can be used to draw inferences that those implementing DevOps can find very valuable. Use this book to expand your ideas of how to improve software delivery.

The point is, it isn't really DevOps, but BizDevSecOps, working in a Generative culture of harmony bliss.

This book took me from clueless to convert in three days. The authors leverage their research into a clear presentation of DevOps principles, what works, how it works and why it works. This was a great introduction to the concepts because the fact that it is based on concrete measures keeps it laser focused on the whole point - becoming, being and remaining a high performing software delivery organization. It was inspiring because it never loses sight of the fact that an organization is formed of human beings and that DevOps is about culture - and that is why - and when-- it works.

This book is essential reading for anybody who's writing software and needs to deal with management. For one thing, it finally puts to rest that old chestnut that you loose productivity if you spend time writing tests. Using real studies and actual metrics, it proves once and for all that improving code quality IMPROVES productivity. And that's just in the first chapter! I can't recommend this book too highly.

There have been a number of books that I've looked at and read on DevOps. Some are very technical and some are too lightweight. I think this book perfectly balanced technical aspects with using building blocks to take the reader on a journey of understanding.I highly recommend this book as a book for those who want to become more familiar with DevOps and how it will impact their organizational structure and culture. This book does not get into the technical how to and I think that is perfectly acceptable.

What a wonderful human being and tennis player

This book was extremely detailed and a bit too much for most readers.

Around page 370, the book jumps over 30 pages to page 402, and the intervening pages are stuck further back in the book. Makes it confusing and you have to read with two book marks. Unfortunately this was a gift.

Noted civil rights historian Raymond Arsenault has created a posthumous paean to Arthur Ashe. One of the most storied figures in sports, Ashe was a great competitor and a human rights activist, first by circumstance and then very much by choice.For the price of $22.50, not an easy sum for a struggling family to come up with, world-renowned champion-to-be Arthur Ashe began his career with a cheap tennis racket. By age eight, he showed so much promise that a skilled tennis coach took him under his wing, and by age 25 he had “all the attributes of celebrity but one: money.” These remarkable happenings were centered on a young man who, as a child, had been so small and frail that almost any childhood illness might have wiped his name from the pages of history. He grew up, getting taller and stronger but always projecting a gentle, relaxed physical stance (except when tearing up an opponent on the tennis court) and genteel, well-articulated, morally purposed ethics.The ethics were the product of his impoverished upbringing as a dark-skinned son of the American South, a member of the black underclass in the former capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia. His father had made his way as a house servant for several prominent Jewish families, and then as caretaker for a large black park that included tennis courts. After his mother died, tennis seemed to fill a void in Ashe's life. When he couldn’t participate in local matches because of the color bar, he was supported in taking lessons and competing in other locations. He gradually climbed to the top of the game.With many firsts and a life that put him in direct contact with the greats of the sports world and others on the big stage, Ashe is a profound subject for any biographer, and Arsenault spent nine years on this exploration of the man who was the first and still the only black man to win singles championships at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open. Owing to his upbringing in a racially tense atmosphere, Ashe learned to choose his words carefully, but would become a fierce supporter of anti-apartheid initiatives in South Africa and, of course, racial integration in his homeland. He was arrested twice for his role as an advocate for the rights of South Africans and Haitian refugees. After contracting AIDS from blood transfusions, he started the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS and later the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health.Arsenault has worked through interviews with those who knew Ashe, and also with Ashe’s own extensive personal writings, so that the man’s voice is heard again. That is the conclusion one must come to when one finishes reading this expose of Reagan, MCA, and mostly the Chicago mob, but other crime elements such as the Meyer Lansky and Moe Dalitz criminal organiztions. A real eye opener for the novice when it comes the the real American political system. Mr. Reagans' was out for himself, no matter whose he had to stab in the back. He informed on his fellow actors who he called called Communists, knowing of course that domestic Communism posed no threat to American security, and that any fils written for "red purposes", would final many screenplay excerpts being penciled out. He was a servant of Mammon way back then, as well as Governor of California, and President of the United States. Yet, among many blue collar folks he is considered a hero-YIKES ! 5 Stars

when i was very young i worked in a support capacity for several of the key figures who had been involved in handling mr. reagan's career while he was a client of mca. (i respected these gentlemen, incidentally. compared to most of today's crowd they were professional, courteous, and had class). while i do not have inside information confirming anything that dan moldea has written here, he seems to have a good feel for the way things worked in hollywood. reagan almost certainly rose up in the world thanks to cronyism and sleazy deals-- especially the mca waiver, which dan covers well (as does lou cannon in his more famous book). maybe that doesn't exactly make our dear Ronnie a gangster, but it smells bad enough that it should stink up the man's reputation for as long as justice still has one good eye, as Joni Mitchell put it.

Another bitter dose of truth to swallow not onlyfor the conservative Reagan supporter, but also for any American that lived during the time of the Reagan administration's polices.It allows the reader to understand why Reagan made the policy decisions he made at the time.Policy decisions which set in motion some of the economic damage that the country now faces.

Very well researched and a fascinating read for anyone interested in how back room Hollywood maneuvering propelled Reagan from a small time actor to all the way to the White House.

Dark Victory: Ronald Reagan, MCA, and the MobDan. E. Moldea has specialized in investigating organized crime, and has written for many publications. This book is about Ronald Reagan and his relationship to MCA, the powerful entertainment conglomerate. Show business, Hollywood and TV, play an important role in adjusting the thinking, wants, and buying habits of the public. They have more effect on people's lives than many churches. There are questions and allegations about Reagan and MCA. Are there links to organized crime (p.2)? MCA owns the largest motion picture and television production companies in the United States, and other businesses (p.3). In the 1940s Hollywood shifted its attention away from organized crime to the Communist menace (p.5). President Kennedy's term saw an investigation of anti-trust violations; it was settled out of court (p.6). MCA's executives made Reagan a multi-millionaire overnight, before he was made Governor. Reagan appointed "known associates of organized crime" to his campaign staff and later to positions in the Reagan administration. [This book must have been written before the drug smuggling and money laundering operations known as "Contragate" became public knowledge.]Chapter 1 has the history of MCA and how it developed with the spread of radio and records, entertainment for the masses. Chapter 2 tells how organized crime developed in Chicago, moved into legal businesses and bought political protection. [No mention of strike-breaking or business rivalries.] They then moved into Hollywood and its cash-rich businesses. Will Hays hired gangsters to break unions (p.26). Payoffs to the union officers saved many millions in wages and benefits (p.27). Chapter 4 tells how the studios used union bosses to keep wages low and control their workers (p.37). The next chapters tell of anti-trust suits against MCA, and its business with competitors. It tells how big business and the Federal government acted for mob-controlled unions. The anti-trust ruling in the Paramount case allowed banks and others to finance motion pictures (p.80). The removal of Communists from Hollywood was followed by the increased involvement of organized crime (Chapter 11). The Kefauver Committee investigated organized crime (Chapter 12). They did not call Korshak (p.91). The Mafia was too powerful for Kefauver (p.92). Chapter 15 tells of Senator Barry Goldwater's friends (pp.118-119).Chapter 21 explains MCA's monopoly: a "blanket waiver". The Anti-Trust Division said this was a conspiracy between MCA and SAG (p.166). Chapter 23 has Ronald Reagan's grand jury testimony from Feb. 1962. His memory was "hazy on a great many things" (p.183). Reagan didn't want to over-expose himself, and would not do commercials (p.188)! One of Reagan's concerns was a pension plan for himself (p.194). Moldea explains 11-22-1963 on page 234. Reagan made a commercial for Goldwater (p.235). After this he was picked for governor (p.238). Was the sale of Reagan's ranch too good to be true (pp.240-241)? The remaining chapters cover the later career of Ronald Reagan, the business of MCA, and their symbiotic relationship. Reagan's link to MCA brought him wealth and fame. The `Epilogue' tells how Ronald Reagan tried to give away the publicly owned airwaves; "no antitrust problems" (p.307). Should the tried and proven anti-trust laws be junked because of "new economic realities" (p.313)? Should failure be rewarded? MCA's conflict with James Garner is on page 314. This section also tells about Lew Wasserman and Sidney Korshak. President Reagan cutback on the FBI's crime fighting and on other Federal investigations (p.319). Next he reduced funds to state and local authorities (p.320). Was Reagan a "fraud" (p.321)? The quiet scandals are listed here (p.324).This book is very informative but sort of drags in parts due to its length.

I was fortunate enough to meet Ken Maly and work for John Maly for 20 years. The Maly Family changed my life and I am forever grateful to them. Reading this book brought back so many memories, it was a fun and emotional read having been a part of it all. Highly recommend!

What a great book! Having been a part of “The Maly’s way” I would recommend this to any one wanting to build a team, grow business, show what Mentoring is about! I was truly blessed to be on the Maly’s team with such a great leader in John Maly.

Great read, I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

John’s account is a personal history, and also a primer on the professional beauty business in the U.S. The family history shows the difference in approach to business, with the Midwest following a traditional “mom and pop” method (mostly filling the management ranks with friends and family), which was the basic tactic followed by most distributors. Meanwhile John took a more aggressive approach and hired professionals from outside the industry to enable growth. That may or may not be of interest to the general reader, but his review of the development of the beauty business in the U.S. is a good read for anyone interested in this segment of American economic activity.

A beautifully told story!This is an outstanding story - as an entrepreneur myself I found myself reliving my story and I couldn’t put it down. It is rare that you get to read such an honest and open peek into what it takes to be a successful business owner. And, then the family dynamics add a level. The business really becomes everyone’s baby! Love it! Thank you John for telling such a beautiful story.
