I used this as a primary reference for my Graduate monograph. This is an outstanding book, the best in its field. It was written from a British perspective, and I would have liked to see something from the American perspective. It did make some references to American techniques as well, particularly concerning WWII and Hollywood. In all, a very good book.

While the book was exceptionally well written for academia in the Queen's English, its ability to fully interest a layperson was unfortunately lacking. Additionally, the book seemed overtly preoccupied with the propaganda of recruitment by different nations and armed forces throughout history rather than the propaganda wars that reached a zenith during World War II.Little mention is made of psychological warfare/operations, which is what I thought the book would concentrate on.Overall, a good book but not what I personally expected.

As an undergraudate studying a Propaganda course at Durham University, the book was invaluable. For everyone on the course, it was the unofficial textbook.The key to its success is its masterful combination of bredth and depth. It illuminates critical issues well with examples giving a lively history of propaganda throughout. It also never isolates propaganda from the wider context.I paid particular attention to the Second World War chapter, which was a bit thin on Soviet Propaganda and gave too many lists (esp. of films) but was overall a wonderful chapter. The chapter on the Gulf War was also especially good.My only criticisms would be that it needs more awareness of the metholodigical issues for the propaganda historian and more on Vietnam given its significance as the first mass television war. Could also do with some more pictures given its emphasis on visual propaganda.Thanks for a splendid book and a great website accessible through Leeds University School of Communication.Joe

She received her doctorate in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco, with a specialty in health policy. She currently teaches courses in healthcare leadership and management, healthcare analysis, and healthcare economics. Her primary research focus is health policy, nursing workforce, and organizational analysis of economic and quality issues of acute care hospitals.As a registered nurse for over 20 years, she has spent the majority of her career at the bedside providing care to critically ill adult patients. She has also held hospital education and administrative positions. In these various roles, she has experienced firsthand some of the failures of our healthcare system and feels it is imperative that healthcare professionals understand the healthcare reform issues and join the debate.Jeanne Wendel, PhD, earned a doctorate in economics from Southern Methodist University. She is an economics professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she teaches classes in health economics and the economics of government regulation. 13 yr old son loved this book & all the others written by Jack Gantos. The guy writes great books for boys. My son can't get into the Harry Potter type fiction. This was just his style!

I liked this book because Gantos managed to fill a book with just a few days and keep me interested.

A skilled writer of children’s books, Jack Gantos pours his careful mix of humor, insight and advice into his newest endeavor,THE TROUBLE IN ME. Jack didn’t have to look far for the inspiration of his new coming-of-age novel --- all he had to do was take notes on his 14-year-old self.Capturing the span of a week, THE TROUBLE IN ME reveals the journey that led Gantos spiraling down the wrong paths. Set in warm, sunny Fort Lauderdale, Gantos recounts his early teen years with a direct and straightforward honesty. Unlike a normal autobiography, Jack writes his encounters very personally, and above anything else, with incredible humor. Although the story drags on at a slow pace, at times, and is bogged down by unnecessary insight, it makes up for this with its balance of action, adventure and wittiness.With the unlikely arrival of Gary Pagoda, who is newly freed from juvie following his conviction of car theft, Jack is mesmerized and infatuated with becoming someone he is not. Gantos showcases his thought process at this time, and his desire to break the rules just to fit in with the new cool guy in town. I liked how the author explained some of the decisions he made, and it helped the reader understand the book and the characters better.Throughout the story, Gantos begins to lose the most important things to him. As he continues to be Gary’s disciple, he becomes desperate enough to do whatever it takes to be like him. I am not at all familiar with the works of Jack Gantos, and it is my understanding that The Trouble in Me is a fictionalized memoir of what appears to have been a very troubled childhood. Gantos was apparently one of those very awkward kids who never fit in to the middle school and high school culture. While he had a good relationship with his mother,his father is portrayed as a tyrant similar to the father in The Great Santini. Things really start going downhill in the author's life when he become acquainted with Gary Pagoda, a delinquent teen who has already had several brushes with the law. A book I would share with someone age 13 and up, particularly someone with relationship and self esteem issues. I am not sure if the author is a totally reliable narrator, but the story speaks to those of us who had a hard time fitting in when we were in our early teens.

Joey Pigza remains my favorite of all the books of Jack Gantos. I can't remember a character like Joey. Joey Pigza showed up just as our collective awareness of ADHD was growing, but Joey is just an impulsive kid who can't sit still. He doesn't need a label; he just needs understanding and acceptance and patience. Later Jack Gantos is asked about his brush with the law in author interviews, and Gantos decides to talk...candidly. This book is a continuation of that candid conversation. In this book, Gantos explores the pivotal relationship with an older neighbor kid whom he has often referred and how that relationship changed his life forever. It's not just an autobiography or a true-life coming-of-age story. Gantos uses his own story to explore and reveal what happens when a kid "turns bad." It isn't that his story speaks of something largely human; it is that he purposefully uses his story to explore questions of what motivates us, why do some people draw us in, why do we follow, what makes some of us more vulnerable to risks than others, and so forth. I love his mission. His prose isn't as clear as his purpose though. I wish the story was as stripped down as his aims. Instead, the story is loaded up with metaphor after metaphor, description after description, and his words are as thick as that murky canal in the sweltering Florida afternoon. Worth the read but wish the ride was a bit more slippery like the story itself.

Very helpful!

Book is very basic. Mentions only palaces and a few temples as far as historical places are concerned . I skipped parts about hotels an restaurants. So no comments.

You get what you pay for. This book is badly constructed and written. There are infinitely better guides available. Don't bother with this one.
