used book what else can I say and I needed it for college so it is what it is price was great considering schools over charge for books and then offer pennies on buy back program

Excellent resource book. Down to earth with case studies sprinkled throughout. Well worth purchasing to read and then keep on your bookshelf as a reference.

Good explanation of ethical theories, but the cases could have been more challenging.

Just what was needed

I got an A in the class so it's good I guess

I am absolutely loving it! Knowing after I am done with it this semester it will not sit in my closet and collect dust but I can return it!

good shape good price

The book includes concepts vital to my degree program, but there are many grammatical errors that I find distracting.

Outstanding book, truly in my view the best work on the Kingdom and our unholy alliance with the Saudi's that continues to cost American lives abroad and at home and our own security as a whole. Well worth the time to read this book, if you read no other book on this topic READ THIS BOOK AND PASS IT ALONG TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY --or buy additional copies for your friends and family- this information needs to get out to a larger audience in America in particular. This work by Robert Baer is filled with -facts- not pleasant fictions that we have been sold over and over by MSM, and others in Washington in both so called parties. Highly recommend this work-- to all that still appreciate facts and truth, not emotionalism, and feelings over truth.

Reading this book I can understand how the CIA failed completely to stop any of the attacks by bin Laden and others. To have a agent operating in the Middle East who is not able to read Arabic or Farsi but who depends on third and forth hand information shows the incompetence of the CIA. Baer also states that the GW Bush administration was the first to take the threat of bin Laden seriously while ignoring the meeting in August of 2011 where Bush and Rice and Powell all discounted bin Laden as a threat and ignored the advisories prepared by the Clinton administration. Bush and Cheney were to intent on repaying their campaign contributors with the gift of the Iraqi oil fields to think about anything else.Baer shows no insight into the tribalism in the region that dominates the policies and politics and behaviors of people in every country in the region and like others, he mistakes religious differences as the core driver when it is but an excuse. The United States was instrumental in the overthow of democratically elected governments in Iraq and Iran and Egypt and this is overlooked by Baer who looks only at current events and not the efforts by the British after World War I and II to force national boundaries that igored tribes and ethic factions entirely. The ignorance shown by Baer in his book is quite overwhelming and I would be embarrassed to admit having been on the government payroll for decades and having learned no more than a reporter outside of the services. Baer is evidently unaware that the version of the Quaran that the Saudi Arabian government publishes and distributes by the millions each year targets the infidels in the United States. It was their Wahhabism that incited bin Laden. Also overlooked to a large degree is the extent to which men like GH Bush work directly for the bin Laden clan through the Carlye Group. GW Bush denied the FBI any opportunity to question any member of the bin Laden family after September 11 and saw to it that they left the country on a charted jet.Baer is also politically naive and culturally ignorant and oblivious to the history of the past 100 years in the region in his beliefs that Saudi Arabia and the Middle East countries should outlaw righteous murder. The United States is actively dropping bombs on civilians in 6 countries at this time and providing Saudi Arabia with bombs and fuel to drop bombs on civilians on a 7th country. The US bombed and shelled hospitals and schools and water treatment and power plants in Iraq and killed more than 1 million men, women, and children, while leaving behind tons of fine radioactive dust to damage future generations for many many years.Baer writes about the Muslim Brotherhood as though it develop spontaneously and he ignores the Mubarak kleptocracy and brutality and suppression of the press that created the perfect environment for this group to flourish.

Robert Baer, a twenty year veteran case officer of the Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Operations (the people who have their feet on the ground in foreign nations around the world) who most recently served as vice-director of operations, Iraq, shatters the consensual naiveté of Western populace with his compelling and disturbing work, "SLEEPING WITH THE DEVIL: How Washington Sold Our Soul for Saudi Crude." In a work that spans nearly the entirety of his two-decade experiences and takes us through the dark and disgustingly murky intrigues and backroom graft that have made regime of Saudi Arabia virtually inseparable from the political process of modern America.Let's get something straight; unlike most of his contemporaries Robert Baer makes no socio-political argument within his text. The truth, as he sees it, is his only cause. Regardless of your political persuasion and the vagaries of your opinions on the social contract of the individual vis-a-vis the state "Sleeping with the Devil" will make you take a second look at the party you favored with your vote. In fact, Baer refers to the last half century of corruption within Washington to be "the greatest bi-partisan effort in the history of Washington politics". A period which began with a briefcase containing one million dollars accidentally "forgotten" by Khashoggi, a Saudi billionaire (who is still active in Washington today), in the Nixon White house and has continued unabated and in ever growing depth to the modern day.The road to corruption is paved in black gold it seems. Baer leads us down this miasmic path and walks us through backroom deals of Washington's K Street lobbyists, intrigues in sub-Saharan Africa, the 4.6 billion dollar palace of the most corrupt Saudi Prince and pool-side meetings with Russian Mafiya arms-traffickers. How does it all come together? Baer's brutal truth should make every American reader shudder; it is our nation's political elite who have blindly subsidized the very terrorism of which we have recently become victims.Through our alliance with the House of Saud (the Saudi Royal Family) we have seen billions of petrodollars go to regime who has returned that money to us via graft and commissions to buy all the influence it needs. The rest of the western money is largely spent in two fashions. The lion's share goes to funding their own decadent excess. A Baer gives us insight into a lifestyle of depravity which includes almost ten-thousand princes, twice again as many palaces, the thousands of Filipino and Moroccan women who serve at their pleasure, and a lifestyle in which there is open competition for the greatest amount of excess. The Saud royal lifestyle has not gone unnoticed by the people of Saudi Arabia and it brings us to the far more disturbing second use of western oil-money. The Saudi's own people have suffered the most at their hands; they have no rights and referred to as property on their own passports. Religious fundamentalists have long decried the `heretical' lifestyles of their "rulers" and here lies the truth of things. The despotic Saudi regime is holding on by the most tenuous of grips. In attempt to placate the fundamentalists who want to drag them into the streets the Saudi's have spent countless billions funding their actions. After fourty-years of such protection payoffs the largest Arab nation has been transformed into a breeding ground for militant fundamentalism. The Saudi educational system has been entirely conscripted, all children save for those of royalty and their retainers are educated in madrasahs, schools of Islamic hate that enforce faith with brutality, ignorance, and censorship. 75% of all collegiate graduates earn degrees in Islamic Studies, which creates a working class who are unqualified to hold any job. This majority of educationally indoctrinated, poor, and religiously fanatical citizenry is the source for much of the destabilization of the Arab world and is a reality that is about to boil over. Is it any wonder than nearly all of the 9/11 hijackers were born and raised Saudi subjects? Worse, the Western world (and more recently China and Russia) were the ones, by proxy, responsible for its funding. This is the picture Robert Baer paints for us.These accounts aren't after-the fact punditry and are only the tip of the iceberg, Baer was there. In fact, prior to publication the book was vetted by the CIA and significant sections were deleted due at their demand. Rather than leave gaping wholes in his arguments and making note of their removal in his epilogue Bear leaves the blacked out print in place, giving the reader a tantalizing contextual insight into just what `the company' wanted removed. The reality Robert Baer shows us is a disturbing one and like a modern Paul Revere, "Sleeping with the Devil" is his clarion call, here is the enemy and they're coming.

** This book review, as well as many more, can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca). **My Review: I picked up this book recently from my local library right before a job interview. Trying to distract my nerves I sat there reading the book jacket I was quietly chuckling to myself and it honestly helped to reduce my nerves. I like funny reads. I do. But I also feel that they're really hard to write well. What is deemed "funny" means different things to different people and while I think that Jenny has a great sense of humour I don't necessarily think it came through well in this book. There were some great, hilarious gems in this book but the overall feeling of chaos in her writing stifled those funny bits. It felt very disjointed -- like you were talking to a overly caffeinated person who would shoot out random stories that didn't necessarily have anything to do with each other. It often felt like she was just babbling and not caring about what she was talking about and after awhile that got frustrating. And don't get me started about the overused and excessively annoying footnotes! Gah! Enough already! I know you're funny Jenny! Show me!Don't get me wrong, there were certain parts of stories where I did actually laugh out loud because Jenny is funny. But then she'd take too long to get to the end of the story and start to lose me. Or the story seemed much too unrealistic to be true and ... she'd start to lose me. Overall, I guess I just felt really lost. I read over half of the book before I finally called it quits because I just couldn't take any more of the rambling bedlam that is her memoire.I think Jenny excels at writing funny little snippets (like on her blog, The Bloggess) but this full-fledged book didn't showcase her best comedic assets. With better editing and a more polished feel I think this could have been amazing. Unfortunately her frantic way of storytelling just isn't for me, I guess. I'll stick to reading her blog.My Rating: 0 (didn't finish it)

What did I like? About 2 chapters where she talked about meeting her husband. I thought maybe it was going to turn into a decent book. I was wrong. What did I dislike? I disliked that somehow this ended up on the New York Times Bestseller List as as a #1 Seller; that Entertainment Weekly gave it glowing reviews; that Ladies Home Journal called it "the funniest memoir ever...."; that People Magazine, the Washington Post, etc. gave this raving reviews. I am clearly not in touch with what is going on in the world. It was trash. Complete and utter trash.I was looking for an uplifting humorous book. Something to make me smile. All of the reviews said that this was the book to buy. They were wrong and I paid too much money for this book. I don't know what I am going to do with it. I can't give it to a local charity because I would be ashamed. I can't recommend and share it with a friend. All I have left is to throw it in the garbage. What a waste of good paper (I should have bought it on Kindle, my mistake). Did I mention that I don't like the book? She made money on this book? And sadly, I ordered two humorous books at the same time and now I see that the second one is written by Jenny Lawson as well! The joke is obviously on me, but I refuse to let her and these blind book critiques have the last laugh!Save yourself. Do not buy this book. Save yourself time, money, and aggrevation knowing that people like this are considered "authors". If that is the case, then I am writing my own book because they are selling people a bill of goods and people aren't smart enough to see it.I am ashamed to know that I spent so much time trying to understand this author (who seems like an intelligent person). She never once made me smile or laugh. She just constantly shocked and amazed me. She actually quit her job in HR to write....this. But hey, she is laughing all the way to the bank. The joke is on us.

Sometimes you want to forget very embarrassing things that happen in your life and a few of those times you’ll ask your friends to pretend it didn’t happen, now think about that being the majority of your life. Jenny Lawson, aka “The Bloggess”, recounts her life from childhood through school, romance, marriage, and motherhood in her first book, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir.Lawson starts off the book by throwing the reader into the deep end of her humor and really doesn’t let them resurface until after finishing the book. Beginning with her childhood in Wall, Texas, Lawson goes through her quirky life from one embarrassing moment to another especially since her own father was a quirky taxidermist whose business was in the backyard AND that was before she even started school. Misadventures in high school—mainly dealing with a cow—and college follow, and it is in the latter where she meets her husband in which the most hilarious moments of her life begin. And through her marriage with Victor, the birth of their daughter, and move out into Texas countryside the misadventures only continue with predictably hilarious, yet embarrassing results. It’s hard to really evaluate a humorous memoir, except grading it on the content of its own humor. Honestly, given how much I looked forward to reading this book each day and the fact I had to stop reading out of either laughing or just being embarrassed at the author’s own embarrassing situations means it succeeded. Yet on top of that is Lawson’s faux notes from her editor(s) just add to the overall experience of the book. And the added bonus chapter of the paperback of notes from her promotional tour is a cherry on top of everything.Let’s Pretend This Never Happened is a hilarious memoir of a woman who owns up to her embarrassing moments, cherishes them, and knows they made her who she is. Though this wasn’t the first book by Jenny Lawson that I’ve read, yet now I can see why it became a bestseller and has led to a few more books by Lawson.

The Hacking of the American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains, by Robert H. Lustig

Review

"Our health, resistance to disease, and ability to function on a day-to-day basis have essentially been hijacked, all in the name of corporate profits. Dr. Lustig explores how industry has manipulated our most deep-seated survival instincts to motivate our food choices in a way that directly undermines our ability to survive. But more importantly, The Hacking of the American Mind eloquently reveals how we can disengage from this influence and re-establish ourselves on a path to wellness." —David Perlmutter, MD, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Grain Brain and Brain Maker“A provocative, persuasive plea to stop seeking the wrong kind of happiness. Take it from the neuroscientist/endocrinologist who sounded the alarm about sugar: chasing rewards is far less rewarding than finding contentment.”—Adam Grant, author of New York Times bestsellers Originals and Give and Take, and coauthor of the New York Times bestseller Option B"Robert Lustig takes on one of the greatest paradoxes of our time: how can it be that we have more sources of pleasure than ever before in human history, and yet are increasingly sick, broke, and unhappy? By deftly weaving together neuroscience, history, economics, and more, he provides a much-needed explanation of how the 'pernicious peddling of pleasure' causes real happiness to elude so many of us — and also provides a desperately needed roadmap for escaping the pleasure trap." —Sharon Begley, coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Emotional Life of Your Brain"Pleasure and happiness are not the same thing – as our addictions to everything from unhealthy food to cellphones show. In this book, Dr. Lustig unpacks the science of pleasure versus happiness to explain the true causes of the last 40 years of addiction, depression, and disease. The good news is that the solution is easy — well, maybe not so easy — put down your cellphone. And sleep. You’ll be happier, and you’ll live longer!"—Arianna Huffington, author of the New York Times best seller The Sleep Revolution"Dr. Robert Lustig examines our culture of illness, an industry-created fog that, despite our best efforts to cope, has left us stressed, isolated, addicted, and depressed. With The Hacking of the American Mind, he empowers us with the science of mind, brain, and love in a delightful, insightful, and humorous way. You can live by pursuing pleasure, sugar-coated as 'happiness,' or you can read this book."   —Elissa Epel, coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Telomere Effect

I am the editor and founder of the most visited natural health site on the web and had the opportunity to review Dr. Lustig’s book and interview him before it was published. He is perhaps best known for his brilliant research into sugar and obesity. His previous book, “Fat Chance:” was a New York Times Best Seller. Lustig is an emeritus professor of pediatrics in the division of endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco, and a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies. His motivation for “writing the book began 30 years ago, while still a postdoctoral fellow in neuroscience at Rockefeller University. There, he learned about the interaction between dopamine and serotonin in the brain. At the time, only basic correlational data existed, but there appeared to be a very specific interaction going on between these two neurochemicals. The book discusses how many try to bolster their happiness through certain food choices, but this actually does not work, and Lustig provides compelling arguments that the foods you crave drive up dopamine and drive down serotonin. Rather, it’s experiences that make you happy. People can make you happy. You can make yourself happy. In his book, Lustig outlines a number of different strategies to become happier. Ultimately, the goal is [to increase] your serotonin,” he says. There are four ways to boost your serotonin, and they’re all free. They’re also things your grandmother likely told you to do. First and foremost is making human connections.Social media generate dopamine, associated with pleasure, and hence can drive addiction. The main problem is that when dopamine goes up, serotonin goes down. So, online communication is actually a major causative factor of unhappiness. Lustig also elaborates on how companies — both food manufacturers and electronics companies — capitalize on the biology of dopamine versus serotonin to get us addicted to their products. It’s important to realize that the dopamine (or reward-generating) pathway is the same no matter what your source of pleasure is. It can be a substance, such as nicotine, alcohol, heroin or junk food; or it can be behavior, such as internet surfing, shopping or pornography. The problem, in a nutshell, is that dopamine is an excitatory neurotransmitter, and in excess is neurotoxic. When dopamine is released, and the neuron on the other side accepts the signal, it can damage that neuron. Over time, excitatory neurotransmitters can cause cell death. To protect itself from damage, the postsynaptic neuron employs a self-protective mechanism — it downregulates its receptors.By having fewer receptors, the dopamine cannot do as much damage. So, each time you get a “hit” or rush of dopamine, the number of receptors decrease. As a result, you need increasingly larger doses or “hits” to get the same rush. Eventually, you end up with tolerance, a state where even a large dose produces no effect. Once the neurons start to actually die off, you’re a full-blown addict. Serotonin, on the other hand, is not an excitatory neurotransmitter. When it acts on the serotonin-1a receptor (the “contentment” receptor), no damage occurs. Hence, happiness does not lead to addictive behavior. Keep in mind that dopamine downregulates serotonin, so it’s basically impossible to achieve happiness (related to serotonin) through pleasure-seeking behavior (related to dopamine). One of the cheapest pleasures that stimulates dopamine is sugar. Many reach for sweet junk food when they feel down, thinking it’ll help them feel better, but neurochemical science reveals this simply cannot happen. Add the stress hormone cortisol to the mix, which downregulates the serotonin-1a receptor, and you have a recipe for both addiction and depression. That’s what we’re seeing throughout all of civilized society, not just in America, but around the world. There are three other ways, besides connecting, that boost serotonin and happiness. The remaining three of the four C’s are:1. Contribute: Meaning the act of contributing to something greater than yourself; making a contribution to society. “You can get happiness and contentment from your job, but there are certain criteria that have to be met,” Lustig says. “Most people, unfortunately, have a boss who is not contributing to their happiness. The workplace is not usually the best place to achieve meaningful contentment.”2. Cope: Lack of sleep, insufficient exercise and multitasking are all causes of unhappiness. Sleep is extremely important for healthy serotonin production. Here, avoiding exposure to electronic screens is important, as blue light inhibits melatonin production, thereby making sleep more elusive. Electronics will also disrupt your sleep and deteriorate your health by exposing you to unnecessary microwaves, discussed in this recent article on depression.3. Cook: If you cook, you’re likely going to increase your tryptophan, reduce your refined sugar intake, and increase your omega-3 fats (anti-inflammatory) and fiber. Overall, this will result in improved gut health, which has tremendous impact on your mood and mental health. How do you boost systemic tryptophan? One of the keys is to eat real food, and to make sure you include high-tryptophan foods, the highest of which is egg whites. You also need omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, which is a component of every cell in your body. More than 90 percent of the omega-3 fat found in brain tissue is DHA.So, how do you boost systemic tryptophan? You also need omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, which is a component of every cell in your body. More than 90 percent of the omega-3 fat found in brain tissue is DHA. Omega-3s are probably the single most beneficial thing you can put in your body. They are anti-inflammatory. They are anti-Alzheimer’s. They increase membrane fluidity. Therefore, they increase neuronal distensibility, which means it’s less likely that any given neuron will die.The problem, of course, is that when we took the fat out of the food, we took ALL the fat out of the food. It’s been a real chore to get the medical cognoscenti to turn around on this. I do want to do a shout out to the American Heart Association, because they have now debunked their long-standing cholesterol-fat hypothesis. They now recognize that saturated fat was not the demon they made it out to be, and that there are seven classes of fats, and that you actually have to consume omega-3s. You have to consume monounsaturated fats. In fact, you do have to consume some saturated fat because it’s a major component of membranes.Processed fructose, mostly in the form of corn syrup, has become a major contributor to the $3 trillion health care budget in the United States, and there’s clear data linking sugar consumption to de novo lipogenesis — a disease process associated with fat accumulation in the liver, causing insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, metabolic syndrome and associated diseases. That includes Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, lipid problems, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia. In the past, people had a much better understanding of happiness and pleasure. Lustig’s book describes how these terms have been purposely conflated and confused by businesses and governments because it helped sales. To turn the trends of addiction around, you have to understand the difference between the two.So, what’s the difference between pleasure and happiness? There are seven differences: Pleasure is visceral; happiness is ethereal. Pleasure is short-term; happiness is long-term. Pleasure is usually achieved alone; happiness is usually achieved in social groupings. Pleasure is taking; happiness is giving. Pleasure can be achieved with substances; happiness cannot be achieved with substances. The extremes of pleasure all lead to addiction, whereas there is no such thing as being addicted to happiness. Finally, pleasure is dopamine and happiness is serotonin.Understanding the difference between the two is something, for some reason, that the American public just never got. We have to make them get it in order to turn this problem around. Academics don’t get it. Businesses don’t get it.The federal government certainly doesn’t get it. We have to make them get it. That’s why this book is so crucial. This book will help you understand the distinction between dopamine, serotonin and the variables that help optimize these neurotransmitters. Most importantly, the way he explains it all has the power motivate healthy behavior. The bottom line is it’s about the science. There will be detractors who will say this is garbage. But the bottom line is there are 600 references to the primary literature to demonstrate that this is not gobbledygook. The science actually predicts the phenomena that we see and the society we’ve become.

The information in this book made a ton of sense, and it instantly opened my eyes to many of my behaviors and many less than ideal qualities of my environment. Not only that, these revelations were instantly actionable. I feel liberated. This is a powerful book: it will point you toward an achievable path to wellness and it will show you what has steered you wrong, why you got steered wrong in the first place, and what you can do about it. I gasped several times as Dr. Lustig unveiled mysteries that have flummoxed me for years. I'll be buying this book to give to my loved ones at Christmas. This book is one of the important one, folks: get it.

Dr. Lustig distills his core message in the epilogue: "The keys to benefit from pleasure and happiness are to understand the differences between the two, because even though pleasure and happiness are not mutually exclusive, they can still be opposites."I would add that the key to benefit from this book is not to think that you already understand that sentence. Yes, it does sound like a vaguely new-ageish truism, but it most certainly is not.Lustig redefines pleasure and happiness from neurological and endocrinological perspectives. I was familiar with most of the concepts that he uses, but the combination was still a revelation and it had an instant effect. I haven't read many books that have changed my behaviour within 24 hours. This is a very important book, so it doesn't matter at all that it isn't perfect. I didn't find Lustig's own recommendations for behaviour change very convincing or useful. For me his scientific philosophy was more actionable than his practical advice. I also felt that his political views had a strong content but a relatively weak presentation. The headline point of "the corporate takeover" would have benefited from deeper analysis, but Lustig is a doctor, not a political scientist.Nevertheless, The Hacking of the American Mind has the potential to clarify and rearrange some core elements of our cultural self-image. The book already un-hacked my mind quite effectively. If there is a way to give higher praise, I don't know it.
