A very good children's atlas, but not quite good enough for me to give 5 stars.Every map is on double page spreads. This means the middle of the map is in the "gutter" area where the two pages meet the binding. Many important cities and other map features are hard to see because of this. Examples of cities whose printed names are cut off by the gutter: Newark, Minneapolis, Djibouti City. Many other important ones have legible names but are located too close to the gutter to study their surrounding area. Examples of these are Ottawa, New York City, The Hague, Rome, New Delhi, Rangoon.The amount of space given to each territory often bears no relation to its size or importance. In general, Europe and North America get disproportionate attention, while Africa and Asia are relatively neglected. Examples: Mexico gets its own 2-page spread, but Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines et al. are crammed together in a Maritime SE Asia 2-page spread. No African country gets its own 2-page spread.In case of disputed territories, the maps usually show the de facto boundaries and briefly note the existence of the dispute. A few of these are missed (e.g. Abkhazia, Somaliland). Among partially recognized states, only Kosovo and Taiwan are treated as countries, missing the other widely recognized ones, Western Sahara and Palestine. Those omissions look like political decisions.The CD that comes with the atlas is a nice bonus. Unfortunately, the publishers did not make the most of the capabilities of a CD. In the book, some large countries (e.g. China) take more than one set of 2-page spreads. One would expect that in the CD version these maps would not need to be split, since it's possible to zoom in and out and scroll over them. Instead, the maps are still split, so it's necessary to click between them. The CD shows in a web browser. When I let my 7-year-old daughter browse it, she soon decided that she'd rather use google maps to study geography.One could reasonably expect the information presented in the CD to be at least as detailed as the book. But, for example, the book lists the languages of India as "Hindi, English, Urdu, Bengali, Marathi, Telegu, Tamil, Bihari, Gujarati, Kannada" while the CD lists only "Hindi and English."On the plus side, the CD does add a few nice thematic world maps: satellite image, political, physical, climate, and life zones. These are scrollable and zoomable, except for the satellite image.Overall, this is still great value for the money, but I wish the editors had put in just a little more effort to improve the areas mentioned above.
I like the book and it has plenty of information that is well organized and well illustrated. I am using this for my 6 year old and I am sure it will serve him well till he is 10 years old or so.Each continent starts off with a physical map and a tabular snapshot of each country. I wish there was a separate political map of each continent too. That is very useful for children and I had look elsewhere to present that integrated information for my little one. The inner front cover has a political map that may suffice but I would have liked a separate one for each continent.The subsequent pages are devoted to sub-regions of that continent with a combination of a physical and political map of that region. I like that approach because regions have great similarities and it is easy for children when a few countries are clubbed together.I know it is an atlas and not a geography book but i would have given it 5 stars if it had a few pages on types of maps and topographical charts that are very useful for children.
This is a well-planned book for children. The information and illustrations are so well done to help children understand the large world in which we live. A great teaching tool as well as entertaining. I highly recommend it for children of elementary age and older. As an adult, I really enjoy looking at it and learning new information myself.
I had an "adult" atlas that didn't have good maps and contained far more material I did not care about. This fits exactly what I wanted--mainly clear maps.
My son didn't put this book down for weeks after getting it. This book is really well done. There is a nice combination of great maps and detailed information about each country. My 8 year old just loves learning about the world and this book is perfect for him. He can read it and is constantly sharing facts with me. I highly recommend it for kids who are aware and curious about the world they live in.
My 6 year old received this book and he loves it. I bought it to peel him away from his ipad and still expose him to information. It is great to get kids to learn how to research their questions the old fashioned way-by thumbing through books. It also helped foster an already developing love for geography. Very recommended book
I bought this for my 4-year-old niece and nephew. Lots of pictures, maps looked accurate. DK Publishing has a lot of other books for kids that are really great too.
I was very satisfied with this Atlas.
