I love this type of book (Jon Krakauer's books and some I've read about the Tour de France immediately come to mind), but this one gave me a headache. It's clear that Michael Kodas put a lot of time and effort into collecting this information, but the format he chose to use is painful. In this book, he is chronicling various mideeds over a 10+ year period. There are two or three (I'm not even sure) main stories that intersect or at least run somewhat parallel, but it's impossible to keep the characters and timelines straight with all the jumping around. It got to the point where I, who love this type of real story, wanted to toss this one. I was so confused that I just didn't care anymore.I struggled with this rating. It's well written, with no obvious typo/grammatical errors, but I don't know why his editor or publisher didn't suggest another way to tell these stories that would have been more reader-friendly or make the flow more coherent. I'm still not really sure what the "Fate of Everest" is because that wasn't really addressed in the end.

Well written, meticulously researched stories of very low behavior from the top of the world. Of all the Everest books I have read, no others have mentioned wide spread theft of oxygen, tents, warm clothing, sleeping bags, crampons, and even medications that could mean death to the rightful owners. This seems particularly prevalent on the higher camps where they do the most damage. Base Camp seems like a boom town in the California Gold Rush. Everything is for sale from T-shirts and alcohol to prostitution. Dishonest, incompetent guides preying on weekend warrior climbers are common and can also lead to death. These are sad, frightening tales.

Two stories show the problems on Everest. It is the bad side of human nature coming to the fore. It is a book need to read. It shows how need to take care, the mountain may kill you, but then again others may also kill you. Theft of essential gear, guides who are not. The old ideas of looking after others seem to be exactly that - old. The colourful characters may be the ones to avoid. Also the way people will do it on the cheap and either steal or hope others come to the rescue - when they may not. The story of David Sharp is poignant. It can take a bit to keep the narrative together but worth the effort.

Journalist and Everest veteran presents a picture of the great mountain as lawless and unregulated as a gold rush town in the 19th century. It is a fascinating account in which theft, fraud, negligence and mayhem are all present and accounted for.On a mountain in which the fragility of life is so evident even small crimes as sleeping in someone's tent and sleeping bag can be life threatening larger crimes can have dire consequences. As Kodas states:"Those attempting to domesticate The Goddess Mother of the Universe with ropes and satellites shouldn't be surprised that she isn't submitting gracefully to being a mere mortal's mountain."At high altitude with little oxygen the brain becomes impaired as does judgment at a time when they are both most needed. Memories blur and the mind becomes confused, reality becomes obscured. The focus becomes the summit and we find people quite willing to step past the dying in their quest for the top.Kodas explains that there are high stakes on Everest money, fame and prestige are all things which will bring out the criminal element. Selling dysfunctional oxygen containers, lying about experience, neglect and shirking responsibilities, spousal abuse, threats, assault and fraud are all detailed in High Crimes: The Fate of Everest in an Age of Greed. If you find this interesting especially with the setting of Mount Everest, this is a book you should read.

I've read books about climbs to the summit of Everest, but this is the first one I've read to focus on the self-absorption, single-mindedness, and loss of human decency that accompanies preparations and the actual climbs on this mountain. To think that there are people who will take money to "lead" and supply a team of climbers, but then leave the paid customers to fend for themselves with equipment that fails, oxygen tanks that don't work, and lie about it all in such a dangerous place is so hard to understand. The stealing of food, sleeping bags, and equipment and refusal to assist people desperately in need of help shows a terrible loss of human decency in a deadly place. Admittedly, all climbers should be aware of the dangers and real possibility of not returning, but if one takes a lot of money assuring people they will be accompanied to the summit with proper equipment, that person should be relied upon to do that or be held accountable. Very interesting read.

Song maps has given me a completely new perspective on the art of songwriting. Like many other aspects of the music industry, they are probably hundreds the books written about songwriting, but none using the technique of song maps. This is a tried and tested technique developed by the author himself who has had a very successful career in the songwriting capital of the world, Nashville.The author recounts how he would typically be hired to write in collaboration with at least one or two other writers in a 3 hour songwriting session and a lot of the examples and revelations that he gives have come from those experiences.In this book, Hawkins describes seven song maps (or blueprints if you like) that can be used when developing and writing a song, particularly if you regularly collaborate with others.The great thing about this book is that the author takes each song map and provides a huge array of song examples from multiple genres, each of which he dissects to explain the relevant song maps in greater detail.At the end of every song map, the author provides exercises that the reader can undertake to solidify their understanding of the song map in question.The author concludes by encouraging the reader to embark on further study of song maps and reveals even more songs maps that were not covered in detail in the book.Even though the author writes from the perspective of collaborating with others, the idea is to help the reader formulate strong song ideas that can be developed into songs of substance. This book was perfect for me as an aspiring musician. I've had dozens of random song ideas and song titles over the years but no thoughtful nor efficient approach to go about formalizing these ideas into a song. I've just been stream-of-consciousness dumping lyrical lines or thoughts in OneNote, or as voice recordings. If you are seeking a more concise approach to writing and structuring lyrics, I highly, highly recommend this book.Simon has created a fantastic framework that helps you take an idea you have for a song title and evolve it into a structured song with lyrics. Lyric writing can otherwise be a "Wild West" creative process with no boundaries or laws. The system isn't meant to be constricting, it's just a fantastic starting point, as he does encourage you to create variations or experiments outside of the prescribed system once you feel ready.I especially love that (A) the book is not super long and overly verbose; it's powerful and pithy and (B) he uses specific examples from several different genres and time periods. including hits from the days of Ella Fitzgerald to more recent hits—at the time of writing this review—like Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off", Kelsea Ballerini's "Peter Pan", or Lukas Graham's "7 Years". He analyzes the structure of these songs without getting too "in the weeds." Short and sweet.He notes that not all genres have a strong emphasis on being lyric-driven. As aspiring musicians, we have an opportunity to carve out how music will sound in the future, and if a genre today can become more lyric-driven. Personally, I love the sounds of EDM but—with few exceptions —the genre is mostly devoid of original, thought-provoking, moving lyrics. This book will help me explore this route.Thank you Simon for creating this book. I am grateful for it.

I can appreciate what Hawkins says about how he writes songs. I did come away with one positive idea for writing the plot for the song, but his methodology is a bit over the top for me. I've been writing songs since 1964. I don't think any songs are created the same way. Some come with melody first, some chords, some words, some beats. If this is the current methodology for songwriting, then that explains a lot of things about the lack of inventiveness in today's marketplace.

The Benefits I Acquired From This Book:* I can focus on a single theme/concept/story and expand on it through the second verse, bridge, pre-chorus, and refrain.* I am able to write the second verse or bridge with ease.* I am able to write lyrics very quickly.* I am able to experiment with my lyrics using seven different song maps that are taught in the book..* I am able to enjoy the song examples in the book especially the musicals and jazz genres, including, I See the Light from Disney's Tangled, Thank You For the Music by ABBA, Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You by George Benson and New York, New York, which are my favorite songs. There are also a bunch of Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein examples.My Cons On This Book* The author Simon Hawkins claims that he has won various prestigious awards and is Grammy nominated, but I read the lyrics of his original songs, found in the book and I thought they were lame-ass and sucky.* At first I thought this is another useless songwriting book to max out my money when the author Simon Hawkins was like drifting to unrelated topics and outlandish stories, on the first half of the book.* I feel that the Pop Trashes and CCM song examples are a dreadful additions to the book. I am a Bible Readin', Bible Memorizin', Prayin' Christian BTW, but I don't like the current "Worship" "music" that is coming out right now. But that's a story for another day.

Clean, action-packed suspense with romance and humor too! Next one comes out October 2018! I thoroughly enjoy all of this author's books!

This is the first book I've read of H G Wegley's and I have already downloaded, oh say, four more? In No True Justice, he weaves intrigue (could be from the headlines) and romance for Gemme and Lex. Faith is evident in their lives, but not preachy. The sparks are quick and one of my favorite lines ... 'don't tell my accountability group!' left me giggling, there was no sex, but just an uncomfortable situation in the midst of all the danger, poor Gemme had a moment of angst. The twins are fantastic. A quick paced read and the action starts out the door.

This is really good story, made me both laugh and cry. Loved the twins they were great. Can't wait to read more from this author.

This book started with lots of suspense and just kept it going. There were many, many twists. Action packed. Loved the twins and their antics. Felt at times like I was reading from today's headlines.

I loved this book as well as the others this author as written.I look forward to more books by this author. This book was fast moving and exciting.

Gemma Saint was an intern at a media outlet who was put into witness protection after she testified at a trial. She is very unhappy in her new life but accepting of it due to the circumstances. Those circumstances change with a phone call from her WITSEC Inspector in which he tells her to flee and everything she's been told is a lie. When she hears him being shot while they are on that phone call, she decides that only way she will live if she exposes whoever is behind this threat. In order to so so, she contacts Lex James who has an influential (and controverial) blog. She and Lex are drawn to each other from their first meeting and he agrees to help her. Lex has recently taken his genius nephews Josh and Caleb upon the death of his sister. They are taken with Gemma as well. Lots of twists and turns in this one as well as humor when the smarty pants nephews help out. Lex and Gemma's faith shines through as well. KC Daniels, a character from another Wegley novel, makes an appearance here as well. This is a first book of H. L. Wegley for me but it won't be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed it.I did receive this book from the author.

No True Justice book 2 in Witness Protection series. This book sure kept my attention. It sure will not leave you disappointed. Just as No Safe Place did. I can not pick up one of Harry's books and read a few chapters and put it down. The suspense keeps me flipping the pages. Jammed packed with action and adventure. Also some spiritual. Little bit of romance. All makes for a great story. Characters are wonderfully written. Even 2 little Twin boys who will melt your heart. But be careful of them they may be 4 years old but they are genius's. Gemma is on the run. Being put in witness protection she thought she was safe but they have found her. She needs to leave so ones she cares for will not be harmed. The chase is on. You will not put the book down till done. Thanks Harry Wegley for another great story!

Great tourist map !! Easy to read and follow

Never used it. Free maps at Post Hostel, but glad to have had it.

Up to date. Easy to find streets and places.

Nice map but a bit difficult to follow when actually in the city. I found it better to use a cellphone app for mapping. I tend to like paper maps for visualization purposes and for that this was okay. For finding your way it was not that helpful.

In his quest for remote challenges, he has traveled to Tibet, Alaska, Antarctica, Baffin Island and Europe on numerous expeditions. He designs outdoor climbing & skiing equipment for a for a profession and lives with his wife and two dogs in the snow covered mountains of Park City, Utah.

accurate, to the point, with good humor. and signed by the author

Good information in an easily accessible format. This book does a good job of covering chute skiing in the Wasatch. It will get you pointed in the right direction, especially for the more popular descents.

Everything you could need for skiing down some of the Wasatch’s greatest chutes.

This book is awesome and a must have if you are or are planning on skiing in the wasatch!!!

Even after skiing most of North Superior on my face, I'm still glad this guide showed me the way. Prudence inspring (with many tales of disaster) this book makes great reading even if you never get it together enough to point your skis down a 60 degree slope.
