About the Author
Dina Vargo has been a lover of history and tricorn hats since dressing up at the age of six as Betsy Ross for our nation's bicentennial. After receiving her BA in fine arts from the University of Pittsburgh, she worked for the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation and as an archivist for the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area. Dina also holds an MPA in public administration from the University of Pittsburgh and currently works in the affordable housing field. After moving to the Boston area, she became a volunteer docent for Boston by Foot, where she developed an interest for writing off-beat walking tours, and published her first book, Wild Women of Boston: Mettle and Moxie in the Hub, also with The History Press. She currently resides in Roslindale, Massachusetts.

This book, brilliantly written by Dina Vargo, is un-putdownable! Every chapter opens a mysterious door into Boston’s past. Boston is one of America’s most interesting cities filled with history. I learned many things I did not know of this great city and I was already a fan of Boston to begin with. Now I’m practically enamored with Boston after reading this book! The stories range from frighteningly dark crimes and accidents to stories of hope and inspiration. Vargo has made a hit with this book and I highly recommend everyone to read it!
I'm really enjoying this book--the author seems to have not only picked interesting, forgotten stories about Boston, but also many that have strong links to issues facing us today. Sick of the MBTA's tardiness? It could be worse! Blood boiling due to anti-vaxers making everyone unsafe? Read the crazy tale of a small pox antivaccinationist who put his money where his mouth was! If you're familiar with Boston, you'll appreciate the small history of areas you're familiar with and the many interesting photographs of our forefathers (and mothers) and their environment.
Loved this book! It's a very fun read, shedding light on some interesting stories you probably never knew about Boston's secret past. It's not all sunshine and rainbows--these are the stories we need to understand about our past and how we got to where we are. Ms. Vargo is a witty story teller and grips the reader into wanting to hear more about these stranger than fiction stories. I know quite a few Bostonians who will soon have a copy in their hands.
It can also be grisly, fascinating, astounding and utterly riveting. Dina Vargo's clear story-telling and wry humor make educating her readers about Boston's unique history totally enjoyable. Even if you grew up in Boston, you will very likely be amazed at all the things you didn't know as you turn the pages of this little book. This is a great book to carry with you to read on the subway, while waiting in a doctor's office or anytime you just want to ponder the inner workings of the human mind. This is already on my Christmas list to give as a gift to another appreciative Boston history buff. You have to love this book.
