I've read this book in its entirety twice now, and I am sure I will read it again, as it is about my favorite season and it is about the area where I live.The book was written more than half a century ago, but even today you can sense the freshness, perhaps because it is about the freshest season of the year. The author documents his "rediscovery" of spring in the year of 1945, along the way, he takes us to the natural environments in and around Washington D.C. -- the Tidal Basin, Rock Creek Park, Dyke Marsh, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal ... His focus is ornithology (bird watching) and the book has many vivid passages about the birds, especially migrating birds; but it also has descriptions of plants, etc. The book also contains significant portions of philosophical musings about "the hive" (the modern city life) and man's relationship with nature.I find the author's descriptions of birds and trees, and the narratives of his wandering as brilliant as found in any book. The author at his best is as good as Henry David Thoreau or John Burroughs. However, I found his ruminations about "the hive" can be excessive at times (it takes up about 40% of the book). Sure, you don't want the book to be merely descriptions of birds and narratives of trips, a little philosophical musing adds some depth; but when it gets too voluminous it detracts rather than enhances the book. In my future readings I may just pick out those observational parts to read ...

First, Market Street Books, Salisbury, MD. got the book to me fast, in exactly the condition described, better actually, and they enclosed a thank you note postcard picturing geometric abstractionist stacks of Japanese boxes. The book is swell, nature observation in 40's DC, nevertheless his perspectives, much of the environment he talks about will resonate, I think, for anyone who's watching nature near a town. He observes nature and his thoughts, and the effect is like listening to a committed birder, by turns, charming and aggravating. That's engaging. I am also looking up a lot more.

Wonderful book with great illustrations. Jog around DC and enjoy the sights and sounds of the flowers and the birds. Even though the book was written in 70 years ago, it is still relevant to the wonders of DC and to spring. Enjoy!

I orginally bought this book in 1988 and thought it a beautifully written book on not only bird watching but of a Washington that no longer exists due to modern highways and bustle. I recently purchased this book for a friend who is a bird watcher and has lived in DC. I hope he will like it as much as I do. Jenny Brake

Just amazing, another eye opener about how great a country America is. This book rightly points out Americaphobia, the raging hatred of America being pandered on college campuses, the faux racial outcry by lefties and host of other race hustlers, the likes of Coates and Cornel West. As an immigrant to this country I find it quite troubling that so many people support the open hatred and demonization of the greatest nation on earth for anyone to live. If you want to know who we are, at our best, through the eyes of a brilliant scholar and immigrant, read this book and smile and laugh through tears of pride. In my opinion, James D. Hill has written a masterpiece that should be required reading in our high schools, and for those coming to this country as immigrants. It weaves his personal story, with his in depth philosophical and political belief system, explaining in detail, why a man who could have easily joined any number of "victim" tribes to demand special status, instead decided to make a compact with America, to find his own way in this great country. Learning and living with struggle, he never seems to have lost sight of the fact that the life he was building, could not be built in any other country. His love of the country for providing that is obvious, and his story renewed my love of this country, and opened my eyes to things I have taken for granted for a long time.In the pages of this heartfelt letter to his country, this professor leaves no doubt that he believes the current university academic system is in need of overhaul because it has become overrun by tenured Marxist academics who teach hate for everything good about America. We stand to lose all that is good about America if we let them continue to subject our children to their lies. God bless Jason D. Hill, and God help us return our institutions of higher learning to the control of rational human beings..

Lyrical and passionate, personal and frequently moving, Jason Hill's WE HAVE OVERCOME is a love letter to his country and a plea for reason, an exhortation that we preserve the character and values of this country. As a Ph.D. in American Literature who taught in colleges and universities in this country over the past forty years, I can attest to the accuracy of Jason Hill's descriptions of our institutions of higher learning as indoctrination centers filling the minds of young people with alt-left views of America as an "illegitimate, counterfeit country." In his memoir, We Have Overcome, Dr. Hill--as patriots Thomas Paine and J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur before him--seeks to establish the truth of America as the first "nontribal" place in the world, where one has the freedom to create one's conception of the good life for oneself. If slavery was a "birth defect" of our country, we have always been on a "path toward self-reflective improvement." Dr. Hill's book effectively counters alt-left political arguments, and clearly, he is not afraid to do so. While he himself is a professor at a top public research university, he believes that "the chase for respectability at the betrayal of your own conscience leaves us all in the end unmoored to our our deepest core values." Like Emerson and Thoreau, he believes in the power of the individual to effect change. The change Dr. Hill seeks to effect is a return by all to an enlightened and accurate view of America as the last great hope for the world BECAUSE of her embrace of "reason, capitalism, individualism, and self-reliance." Dr. Hill has a gift for relating complex ideas in clear, simple language. His arguments are thus easy to comprehend and forceful in their reason. At the same time, his memoir is intensely personal, full of lyrical passages and heart rending moments. This book sits squarely in today's political discourse; it is a courageous and captivating testament to the greatness of America and the struggle of one born outside this country to fulfill his dream, the American Dream.I could not put the book down and read it in one sitting.

The pages are non-perforated and the pictures come close to but do not encroach on the binding. The book is oversized at nearly 12" x 12". I actually got this book as it is a bit outside my comfort range and it is a "fantastic" addition to my library!!

I heard of this book from my GP a few years ago. He said he'd read the book's review in The Lancet.Because of my own eyesight and concentration difficulties after a cerebral event, I haven't been able to read it until now.I was so bowled over by Julia's story and the way she tells it with such determination to get well - and her wonderful sense of humour (and, boy! don't you need all the laughs you can get in this situation!), that I immediately contacted her to say what a great book, sheer genius!For me, having gone through this sort of thing, it's a triumph of literary description. When you consider how difficult it is to describe cognitive and physical deficiencies, Julia's done it so well. I so recognise a lot of what she went through and so will other patients.One of the most important issues is how to make your doctors LISTEN to the symptoms. Sad to say, mostly they are very poor at this. In this book, the author points this out very clearly. No wonder The Lancet thought it should be widely read by doctors and other healthcare staff.Julia also underlines the equally vital importance of treating patients as individuals, real people with their own thoughts, plans, ideas on how to recover. Often, especially with things like strokes, people are just lumped into a category that writes them off. Julia is a shining example of how to assert a) her own individuality within a very depersonalising system and b) that she is going to get much better than her doctors predicted at the outset. This is such a helpful beacon for others on similar journeys.The third thing that Julia insists we patients remember is 'trust your intuition about your own body - you know it infinitely better than doctors'. In a very surprising and very sad twist in the tale at the end, Julia's intuition all along is proved to be right.This is a great book for encouraging stroke and traumatic brain injury people to take charge of their own healthcare and recovery, and how to manage your doctors (whilst they think they're managing you!!).I'd have liked to read more about what happened after the shocking twist, but I understand why it isn't there. Julia gives some great template letters/info to hand to your own doctors; I'd like to see a 'Don't Leave Me This Way' workbook next!I also wish I'd been able to say those sort of things to my Drs Jerk, Clueless, Nospikka Da Inglish and Indifference. Julia shows that it's possible to be so assertively funny and not only survive, but thrive!This book should be the very first book you read - and have your family and friends read - after stroke or head injury!

If you or a loved one has had a stroke you will love this book. I hope that you have the good fortune of reading it prior to that dreaded event, if you have it, but if not it will still be a tremendous help as you struggle to rehabilitate yourself or help a loved one through that process.In my case, my first experience with stroke was when my next door neighbor had a serious stroke. I wish I had read Julia's book then, so that my wife and I could have helped him and his wife more than we have. Then a few years later one of our best friends had an even more debilitating stroke. In Intensive Care, he and his wife recommended that we read this book so we would understand what they were going through, and how we could best support them. My wife and I read Julia's book and started to use her experiences to better support our neighbor and our best friends. Then I had a stroke. Fortunately, with the timely injection of TPA, I survived with no mental or physical impairments. My neighbor and best friend and their families weren't so lucky.The real problem isn't the stroke itself. You either live or die. If you die, that's the end of the story. If you live, you have to face reality and this book will help you do that over the long recovery process which many times will not return you to where you were before the stroke. If one of your family members has a stroke, especially if you become the primary care giver, this book will help you care for your loved one in a compassionate way, but with the guidance and persistance your loved one needs to recover. If you are a close friend of a stroke survivor, it will help you relate to him or her as the same person you knew before, despite the effects of the stroke, so that you can become an important source of their support during their recovery process.So this is a great book for those dealing with stroke, either as the stroke survivor or the stroke survivor's family and friends. It's also a great book for healthcare providers of stroke patients, because it provides a patient's perspective on the positive and negative experiences she has faced with physicians she has trusted to help her. Some healthcare professionals have criticized her for criticizing them. I applaud Julia for telling it like it is, since I have had the same mixed review of the healthcare professionals who treated me during my stroke. Most were wonderful and helped save me; a few were terribly and cared more about themselves than saving me.

WARNING: Spoilers ahead!This author’s books have earned mostly 4-5 stars on Amazon and Good Reads. Lulled, I neglected to read the 1-2 star reviews. Last December I began reading & was mostly enjoying the first book when an Amazon Kindle Deal caught my eye. Without reading the entire book—not even making it to the 30% mark, I confess—I bought several LJ Ross mysteries at bargain prices.To my surprise and annoyance, the author stopped without tying up the loose threads in an ending! If I’d had a hard copy instead of a Kindle, I’d have thrown it against a wall.This year, I finally picked up the sequel—“Sycamore Gap”—in hopes that the author had written an ending. The previous book featured a serial killer, and a pagan-cum-satanic cult . . . as does THIS book. Plus, up pops book #1’s serial killer—who supposedly is in a secure prison.This sequel—like the preceding book—has no ending(s). It does have great cliffhangers:1) A police superintendent (who is a satanic cultist) suspends the detective protagonist from duty.2) An innocent man is framed (plot holes galore), and he is killed whilst spending his first night in jail.3) Book #1’s serial killer is orchestrating all—assisted by police, prison, jail & community accomplices.I can’t be the only reader who despises non-endings in what appears to be a stand-alone mystery book.

Stories should have a begining, a middle and an ending. This one had a tolerable begining, an interesting middle and then she just stopped. It may have been a tawdry attempt to interest readers in her next book. But for me I felt as though the contract between author and reader had been seriously broken and I would not invest time and effort in any of her other books.

I bought and read this book to see if the writer did any better with it than the first. In this one DCI Ryan investigates a matter involving a skeleton found hidden in Hadrian's Wall. His girlfriend Anna is in jeopardy all the while. Similar broad theme in both books, one carried out on Lindisfarne and the other around Wallsend.If this author's books are selling, she must be doing the right thing by her readers. I know that I couldn't even begin to write one in this whodunit genre anywhere near as good, much less get anyone to buy one.However I keep wishing that Ms. Ross (author) would study the works of P.D. James, Ruth Rendell and Georges Simenon before she begins another book. Her DCI Ryan pales alongside detectives Wexford, Dalgliesh and Maigret. Ryan is what the younger generation of women would call a 'hunk' I suppose; but not much else. In my mind he seems to be made of cardboard.Ms. Ross's basic premises are good but I believe that she has the capacity to do better with them. I'd like to see her try. There are still enough of us older readers around who would like to see her polish her work to a greater state of brightness.

Detective Chief Inspector Ryan is the star of this series, although there are several fantastic supporting characters as well.The first book introduces you to the main characters, their flaws and strengths, as well as the Northumbrian landscape. This author clearly knows the territory in which her books take place and does a beautiful job of describing each location, so much so, that I’ve put the region on my “must visit” list.Each book is a fast paced journey to find the criminal and bring him or her to justice. They’re sprinkled with the emotional details, trials and tribulations of the characters’ lives, which makes each of them real and believable. I had a very difficult time putting each and every one of these books down and now that I’ve finished the last one, I’m desperate for the next…Typically I receive books for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review, however this is a verified purchase. I wasn't sure I would like t he series at first, but when I got into them found them to be really great. I love DCI Ryan he is a bit like detectives used to be. I have got and read all six of the books and even though its a British series I am sure everyone who likes "who dun its" will really enjoy these. As a Brit. living in the US it brought back lots of memories. Try them you will be surprised at the twists and turns.

This could be a good series IF each book finished the story. Instead, Sycamore Gap was the sequel to Holy Island and the reader is still guessing who some of the bad guys are? A sequel to this book is in the works.The plot is somewhat far fetched, about a large band of pagans hiding in plain sight in the local area. Here it is 6 months after the murders on Holy Island and Ryan doesn't seem to have solved any other cases. All the members of the Circle should have been arrested in Holy Island, and Ryan should have had another case to solve in Sycamore Gap.One thing which made no sense at all was that Ryan's girlfriend was allowed to be in the incident room when the detectives and CSI were working on the case. No way would any civilian be allowed that freedom, and later be left alone with all the evidence while the police went chasing after a suspect. With so many pagans living close by it might be possible for Anna to be one of the members of the Circle, and she would be privy to all the evidence the police were collecting about them. It just didn't make sense.I will not be buying the next book. The search for the Pagan leader has already gone on way too long.

Went right to this one from the first book. Since I'm quite fond of Scotland and the border country, this one was right in my sweet spot. The characters are very believable. Villains (yes, more than one) and twists that will amaze you.Reading about the manner in which the polis across the pond work was interesting. The pace takes hold at once and did falter.And as soon as I put this one down, I one-clicked the next one. I could not help myself. .

Steven Saylor is the author of the long running Roma Sub Rosa series featuring Gordianus the Finder, as well as the New York Times bestselling novel, Roma and its follow-up, Empire. He has appeared as an on-air expert on Roman history and life on The History Channel. Saylor was born in Texas and graduated with high honors from The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied history and classics. He divides his time between Berkeley, California, and Austin, Texas.

This title began my recent reading foray into Steven Saylor’s books. My first observation is that Saylor writes exquisitely. He is clearly a master of prose and storytelling. His words melt like butter over a reader’s appetite. Pages turn easily in his work, and the book is hard to put down.The genius of this particular book and the series involving Gordianus the finder is in the juxtaposition of modern concepts of murder mystery, trial and private detective work alongside perhaps the most captivating ancient culture known to man. A murder mystery in ancient Rome could easily suffer from modern bleed, but Saylor weaves in Roman culture and law seamlessly. It is at once a suspenseful drama and a history lesson that leaves one doubly fascinated. I intend to read the entire series, and I highly recommend this book to any reader who appreciates outstanding writing, mystery and a convincing historical/cultural setting that takes a murder drama out of the typical (and in my opinion trite) “who shot john” formula.

I enjoyed the SPQR series by John Maddox Roberts and also read Robert Harris’s Cicero trilogy, so I was attracted to the time period and subject matter- and who doesn’t enjoy a good mystery? His other books Roma and Empire are also worth reading. This may have been the first novel featuring Gordianus the Finder but he’s written newer books that precede this one in chronology. So, start with The Seven Wonders and Raiders of the Nile before you eventually get to this one. All of Mr Saylor’s books are historical fiction and have some basis in fact. The time period certainly comes alive. My favorite books are told in the first person and Gordianus is a good guy but no saint and sometimes he perceives things we the reader don’t and sometimes vice versa...Roman Blood is linked to the Robert Harris Cicero series by featuring one of his first famous cases. Cicero’s slave and secretary Tiro gets an education in life shadowing Gordianus in his pursuit of evidence.

My first read of Saylor. His writing reminds me of another writer who sets stories in history, Patrick O'Brian (Audrey-Maturin series). Mr Saylor does an excellent job of placing us in ancient Rome, it's streets, cultural life and the intrigue of Rome. His environment and knowledge of antiquity and the people is spot on; and I say this as a past student of Latin (along with all the Roman history that went with it)I give Mr Saylor high marks for making characters that are believable, and behave as we'd expect most mortal humans to react in key situations, yet he never loses the ability to make his characters speak in a distinctly non-modern tongue and syntax.As a stand-alone murder mystery novel, that just happens to be set in ancient Rome, ROMAN BLOOD is a good, quick and easy read. It moves along at a brisk pace from the first chapter, where right away the author captures reader attention to the crime and the interesting characters who are drawn into the mystery. I absolutely love Gordianus the Finder; who is neither presented as "all knowing", or overly heroic or macho. His demeanor, buffered by Roman custom and life, matches up with any of the great novel detectives. Gordianus is made of the same, determined stuff, ready to get dirt under the finger nails, yet with the integrity of a square player.It was a fun beach read. I will immediately order Novel #2 in the series. I'm hooked. Great job, Mr Saylor.

I picked this up at a used book sale after Goodreads had been recommending it based on my reading the Falco series. I am not sure what to expect from the series based on this book. There can't be a great deal of detail laying about dealing with actual crimes and trials from 2000 years ago. I liked Gordianus and Bethesda, but am not entirely sure that the mystery is solved in a real way. It seems to me that most of the big reveal was a matter of hand waving by the author which I am not a fan of in mysteries. I think I will try the second book, but am not an immediate devotee of the series. I like the characters so that may be enough to keep me reading.
