Good intro to dsp for beginners

Simple and good book that explains signal processing basics with python samples. Very good approach for learning DSP and python.

Excellent book to explore digital signal processing. Follow the author's advice to install "Anaconda" and use "Spyder" to open the programs he provides for download. This is a clear and concise way to play with advanced concepts for processing signals. Recommend "Practical Signal Processing" by Mark Owen as an adjunct which takes a deeper dive into the underlying math.

Echoing another reviewer, the custom code requirement means you learn their custom code rather than, you know, the standard modules numpy and scipy. For example, at least four separate classes are required, representing hundreds of lines of code, are required just to execute the first six lines of code in the book. All those lines do is define two signals, a cosine and a sine, sums them, then plots them. This, infuriatingly, hides some basic steps. Here's how you can create a cosine wave with frequency 440Hz:duration = 0.5framerate = 11025n = round(duration*framerate)ts = np.arange(n)/framerateamp = 1.0freq = 440offset = 0.0cos_sig = amp * numpy.cos( 2*numpy.pi*ts*freq + offset)freq = 880sin_sig = amp * numpy.sin( 2*numpy.pi*ts*freq + offset)Instead, these clowns havecos_sig = thinkdsp.CosSignal(freq=440,amp=1.0,offset=0)sin_sig = thinkdsp.SinSignal(freq=440,amp=1.0,offset=0)mix = cos_sig + sin_sigwhere CosSignal and SinSignal are custom classes, not functions, which inherits four separate classes, NONE of which are necessary, and all of which serve to make things more complex than necessary, on the pretense this makes things easier. The classes these class inherit are a generic Sinusoid and SumSignal classes, which inherits a Signal class, which depends on a Wave class, which performs plotting using pyplot in matplotlib. None of which make anything really any easier, but does serve to hide a lot of basic functionality, like hiding how to use numpy, matplotlib, and pyplot.In short, just to get through the first two pages, you have to have access to github to import their ridiculous thinkdsp, thinkplot, and thinkstats, totalling around 5500 lines of code, or you are just screwed and can't use this book. All decent teaching books develops code you need as necessary and do NOT require half a dozen files with thousands of lines of custom code just to get to page 2. What kind of clown does this when trying to write a book to show how to do basic signal processing? Someone not interested in teaching you DSP, but trying to show off their subpar programming skills by adding unnecessary complexity (a sure sign of a basic programmer, not a good).The authors openly admit their custom code is nothing more than wrappers in numpy and scipy, so the authors KNEW they were writing a crappy book and filling it with a LOT of unnecessary complexity. Bad code is bad code. Using bad code to teach makes bad teaching. It's obvious Allen B. Downey has spent his career in academia, where writing quality code doesn't matter.

O'Reilly needs to stop having their authors write custom code for their books. Teach with the standard toolboxes.

This book was recommended to me by my babalawo. I was struggling with learning the religion and felt like I wasn't exposed to it often enough to learn its concepts and ideas. Merely going for readings wasn't enough to satisfy my desire to learn more. My spirit yearned to be drawn in closer so I decided to read altar of my soul. Following Marta through her journey was powerful. It gave a personal insight of the different phases of your spiritual discovery and more so that of the journey of discovering the Orishas. It gave a very simple breakdown of the different practices and customs of Santeria. The read was so much more fluid than the technical books of Yoruba that uses jargon you can barely interpret if you are not a babalawo or santero/a. I def recommend the read.

I hesitated buying this book after reading some of the other reviews. We all know there is a lot of bunk out there about the religion and that even some of the better books don't always live up to expectations or do the religion justice. But this book, in my personal opinion, is one of the best books about the religion I have read.At first I wasn't sure I liked the way Vega organized the book. Each chapter introduces you to an aspect of the religion and then a snippet of her personal journey from childhood into the religion and beyond. But I became okay with that after a while, even though I struggled sometimes to make the connection between the topic and where it connected to her story.Each of us in the religion have our own path that brought us here. I enjoy hearing about others' paths. No two are the same and I find them all fascinating. I liked reading her story. I like her, and I have a lot of admiration for her work in the religion.I thought the information she presented about the religion was accurate. And because that isn't always the case I rate that first and foremost when reading a new book about the religion. I'm not familiar with Candomble or other similar religions but what she presented about Santeria was accurate to my knowledge and experience with a few minor difference - and you will always have those.I like the patakis she chose to retell. They are, in my personal opinion, some of the best.I like feeling her love for the religion come through the pages. I love the devotees she allows us to meet through her narrative and their lifelong devotion to the religion. Imagine being initiated at 7 or 8!!This is not a book that lays out information about the religion like a text book. Instead, it is interwoven with her story. So in a sense you are learning about Santeria just as any of us do, and follow the path forward in the way we do. First you become aware, then you receive the elekes, the guerreros, Orunla, initiation, etc. So by using her own story to go step by step through the religion works for me. And I think she gives a good amount of introductory information about many aspects of the religion. We have to remember that this religion is not learned or practiced by reading. You have to experience it. And when you become involved or initiated on any level, you understand how so much of it is simply oral and experiential and that it will never ever be fully represented in a bood of any kind. To me, this is a great book and a great read for newcomers.

This book was recommended to me by a Santero as my interest in Santeria has recently been piqued.Whether or not you have an interest in The Religion, this is an excellent book.It moves slowly in the beginning, and sometimes, Moreno Vega's jumps from past to present can be confusing. However, this is a beautifully written story of Moreno Vega's life, and her journey in Santeria.If you are reading this book just to read an autobiography, it's a great book. There's no way, however, that you can read this book without becoming even slightly curious about Santeria!Definitely buy it and read it!

Very interesting! A moving story that should be serialized (hope I get credit for saying it first!). And Prof. Vega teaches you about her culture while giving her insight into her own journey. She is some kind of hero.

Marta Moreno Vega has written an amazing book. She really shares her heart, soul and wisdom about her life's journey. I'm so grateful to have read this treasure.

Haven't finished it yet but it's a good read. I'm enjoying it. Pretty accurate of description of our religions ceremonies and beliefs.

The book gives a personal history of Santeria. The back of the book has terms and the names of the Orishas. The book gives you peak of the authors journey. Also you learn to be aware of your ancestors.

I bought this book to try to learn some basic principles about designing my own exhaust system. As an RF engineer, the principles were very similar and I did get some good information out of this book. A lot of research went into this and unfortunately there is little solid information on the topic, otherwise. Conjecture on the other hand is easy to find.The problem is, this book is horribly outdated and presumably early 1900's English is hard to follow (the first book was published in 1962). I think most people would give the book 2 stars.When the data was being taken, there were no catalytic converters, no multi-valve cylinder heads, no variable valve timing, no oxygen sensors, etc. Each of these things has an effect on how a modern exhaust system should be designed.There also seems to be some contradictions. The reflections of the wave in the exhaust are caused by every perturbation, especially openings, like where two pipes join or a pipe expands into a muffler. The strongest effect comes from the very first opening, which is where the primary pipes join. This means that primary length is the single most important part of the exhaust system tuning. Yet they provide an equation that has nothing to do with the speed of the engine or how many cylinders are employed and later, they flat out state, that the primaries should be made 18" on a four cylinder engine and then the same for a six cylinder engine, without even using their calculation.Bottom line: If you try to design your own exhaust system using only this book, you will have a very hard time of it and will likely achieve very little improvement in performance over just running it any way that fits. On the other hand, if you try to design your own exhaust system without reading this book, you will have no chance at all of improving exhaust performance. It's your choice, but beware, it is a very hard read.

The info is dated, and the examples are European, so there's limited direct reference that can be made to North American cars. The theories are also dated. There's more directly North American info in David Vizard's SBC and BBC books, and in Vizard's "How to Build Horsepower". Still, this is a good reference book to have in the library.

What else can I say. Still a great reference to understand exhaust and intake dynamics and start the design of your systems.

Apparently this is standard reading for anyone interested in internal combustion technology, whether that is hot-rodders, motorcycle customizers, etc. Most of the information has been established for decades, but then IC engines have been around awhile, and there aren't many mysteries left. This is good, applicable information, that works just as well now as it did in the '50s. I found it informative, and came away with a better understanding of things such as exhaust reversion and scavenging, Helmholtz resonance, and all the other fun stuff involved in making an engine breathe properly.

We saw this at the local chain book store but the line was too long, so I thought when I do my next amazon order I would look for it.My son loves it - as he loves all things concerning a fire engine.it holds his attention for long periods of time as he opens it up and looks at the pictures. then after a while he closes it up and goes on the floor and rolls it around like he does with all his other cars. it seems like good construction, and he has played with it for a few weeks now, still waking up in the morning and the first toy he looks for is this one.i also bought the wheelie dump truck (didnt go over that big- nothing wrong with it, he just isnt into dump trucks i guess) and I bought the puppy on wheels book for my daughter (also 2 and a half) - she can take it or leave it.my son also loves school busses so i am considering that wheelie book next time.

Great idea for a vehicle book - to add tires! The photos are kind of "busy", but I imagine kids like that anyway. I think the wheels are unique and add an element that make them more fun for kids to play with. YES - the wheels really do spin so your little one can run them around on the carpet just like any other toy car. I do plan on buying more of these wheelie books based on this one.

My 1-year-old son loves playing with this book because of the wheels. The book has very little pages and it's not really something we read to him. Its skinny enough to bring along when we go out to eat so that he's occupied.

Super cute book, realistic pictures. Only thing it was really small, smaller than I expected but the wheels actually turn and it stands up on it's own.

This book is FANTASTIC for little kids that are obsessed with firetrucks! It is our go to present for the 3/4 age range, and it holds up to their little hands dragging it along everywhere with them.

About the Author

Mark Marimen was born in Merrillville, IN, and received his master's degree from Duke University. The author of five other books, including Haunted Indiana I-V and School Spirits, he currently lives in Crown Point, IN, with his family. James A. I first saw this book in a local Barnes and Noble bookstore. By the time I was ready to purchase a copy as a Christmas gift for a relative, it was gone! Luckily, Amazon came to the rescue. After I received the first copy and read it thoroughly, I purchased two more as gifts for friends (one who lived in Indiana, one who went to college in Indiana and lives in Ohio.) Since that first purchase, I have also purchased (from Amazon) Weird Kentucky and Weird Ohio, both as gifts for people residing in those states. Because the items are so random and amusing, they automatically suggest fun day trips for residents. Wouldn't you just love to visit historic French Lick (and send a postcard to your buddies?) Or enjoy some amusement parks rides and visit Santa at Santa Claus, IN? I am a lifelong resident of Indiana, and have lived in several cities there; however, there were still many local attractions of which I had never heard. These books are written in a chatty, exciting manner, and make great coffee table "conversation starter" books. Your friends will love them!

I liked the odd stories that maybe the locals in their towns may know, but the rest of us may not. And, the haunt spots are very interesting too for you local ghost hunters.

I bought two books as gifts for my sister one of which was this book and the other a coffee table book of Indiana landscape photos. Shortly after receiving the book she called me and couldn't stop telling me how much she liked this book. She has lived in Indiana her whole life and had personal knowledge of a few of the locations but still thought it was great. The only reason I did not give it a 5 star is because I couldn't review it online before I purchased it. As I do not live in Indiana I would like to have been able to review it before purchasing it as a gift.

I purchased this book to put in a gift basket for a couple of close friends who were moving to Indianapolis, Indiana. While appearing to be more of a 'children's' book at first glance, I found myself, a 26 year old pseudo-adult, pleasantly captivated by its contents. There are all sorts of interesting, unique, and (sometimes) creepy stories and pictures throughout the book, which make it great for all audiences. It will make a good coffee table book because it's great for conversation! Check out the rest of the 'Weird' series if you have the opportunity.

I have had this book for quite a while and really enjoy it. It was a gift from my son because I kept reading his. Had a house full of company one day and noticed someone (who usually doesn't like to read!) reading various stories. He really liked what he had read so I bought it for him for Christmas. He was very pleased to receive it.

My son checked out this book at his local school library and I strarted reading it. Very fun information although a little outdated maybe. Still an interesting read for anyone young or old. Would like to see the addresses of some of the places so we can go visit. Some rare finds in Indiana I didn't even know existed. Shipping was very fast and book was in great condition and packaged nicely.

I moved to Indian and didn't know the lore of the area so I bought this book to find some of the hidden secrets. I was not dissapointed. The pictures are nice and the storys are interesting. It makes a nice table book as well as a referance to storys. It is not in depth but this is not a book on research so that is ok. I do enjoy it and many friends have as well. It is out on loan right now. :)
