B is for Bauhaus, Y is for YouTube: Designing the Modern World from A to Z, by Deyan Sudjic

Review

"In fluid, frank prose, Sudjic covers every letter of the alphabet at least once—B is for both Bauhaus and blueprint, and C heads up five chapters, on cars, chairs, [Pierre] Chareau, collecting, and critical design. The essays are sure to interest even the most informed design aficionado, as they are by turns entertaining and erudite, rooted in a deep understanding of the various forces that have influenced the aesthetics of the modern world (see 'P Is for Postmodern'), but not above a gossipy look at behind-the-scenes drama (see 'U Is for [Jørn] Utzon,'about the design of the Sydney Opera House)." -Architectural Digest"Dictionaries, of course, are large, all-encompassing volumes that convey information dispassionately. In contrast, this is a small book reflecting one man's preferences. . . . personal anecdotes, however, mak[ing] up some of the best entries." -Architectural Record"Not since Herb Lubalin’s U&lc folded in 1999 has there been a publication like this one." -Architects + Artisans“Deyan Sudjic, presents a revealing and personal compendium of the objects and products that embody how design-both good and bad-has influenced our experiences and shaped the modern world. Presented alphabetically, each chapter hits on a concept or object, which Sudjic expands into a discussion of themes formed through his own personal experiences and insights." –Dexigner.com

Review

“[A] must for Ripperologists.”--Publishers Weekly *starred* review “[E]ssential to students of Ripperiana.”--Kirkus Review “At last, the Ripper's victims get a voice...An eloquent, stirring challenge to reject the prevailing Ripper myth." —The Mail on Sunday   “[A]n angry and important work of historical detection…The Five is not simply about the women who were murdered in Whitechapel in the autumn of 1888: it is for them. This is a powerful and a shaming book, but most shameful of all is that it took 130 years to write.”—The Guardian “Deeply researched and powerfully told, The Five unearths the truth behind the Victorian Age's most sensational crime: the 1888 murder spree of Jack the Ripper. Hallie Rubenhold reaches beyond 130 years' worth of lurid headlines and misleading reports to humanize the victims and explore their lives—and tragic, untimely deaths. The Five is a coruscating gem of a book, as necessary as it is compelling.” —Karen Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy   “Meticulously researched and beautifully executed, The Five is a powerful and timely retelling of a story you think you already know. Rubenhold strips away decades of myths and misconceptions so that the women who were ruthlessly murdered by Jack the Ripper are no longer one-dimensional characters in a Penny Dreadful, but real human beings with very real struggles, hopes, and fears. With this important book, Rubenhold proves she is a master of narrative nonfiction: a historian with a novelist’s soul.” —Lindsey Fitzharris, author of The Butchering Art "Devastatingly good. The Five will leave you in tears, of pity and of rage." —Lucy Worsley, BBC presenter, Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces, and author “What a brilliant and necessary book.” —Jo Baker, best-selling author Longbourn “A Ripper narrative that gives voice to the women he silenced; I’ve been waiting for this book for years. Beautifully written and with the grip of a thriller, it will open your eyes and break your heart.” —Erin Kelly, best-selling author of He Said/She Said

Like so many, I've never given much thought to Jack the Ripper's victims. We were told they were prostitutes, and I am ashamed that I didn't question that or think about their lives beyond that. This amazing, extremely well researched and completely compelling book has shown me how wrong I was. Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary-Jane were so much more than just victims. To start with, only really one of them was what we'd conventionally call a prostitute. Polly at one point had a family and lived in a model public housing project---something I had no idea existed at that time. Annie grew up what we'd call today a military brat and married a respected stable man and lived on an estate, Catherine received a much better than average education at what sounded much like today's charter schools...all the women had lives far richer and more complex than I'd ever have thoughtThrough the lives of the five women, I learned so much about Victorian society from a perspective that I've rarely had---that not of rich and royal, but of the rest of us. In some ways, it was a much more progressive world than I'd thought, in others, much darker and crueler. The research the author had to do to write this book is simply amazing. But more than that, she skillfully took what she learned and made it intensely readable. One thing does tie the lives of all five women together---alcoholism. If you ever want to be discouraged from drinking, this is the book to read. Each of the women's lives was altered by her drinking, and my, was there more drinking in Victorian England that I ever thought there was. This is not a book about Jack the Ripper. The actual crimes are not described in detail---we can find that elsewhere. This is a book about women's lives, and it's a book I am so very glad was written. Highly, highly recommended.

What I enjoyed most about "The Five," is that while it seems obvious how much research went into Hallie Rubenhold's book, there wasn't a dull or yawning word at all - she writes with warmth, compassion, and quite frankly, interest, about the five women who were (possibly - at least one, Rubenhold says, who experts disagree about whether the woman was murdered by Jack the Ripper or someone else) victims of Jack the Ripper. The women become human and breathe on the page; Rubenhold gave the women a bit of a voice, and finally, in some cases, gave the women someone who cared about their lives, their circumstances, and what may have happened to them. I thought it was quite nicely done, because as a reader, I felt for these women.Rubenhold gives detailed histories of each woman, from the time she's born and her early family life, to what kind of work each woman may have done, if she married, challenges and tragedies, as well as ways the women may have tried to cope. Social and political details emerge, as well, and the reader gets an idea of what it meant for a woman to "tramp" or "sleep rough." Journalists and writers are quoted and research they've done is included, and it's quite interesting and I enjoyed the diversity. Finally, after each woman's death, Rubenhold explains news reports and how they differed, and maybe why they differed. She explains who were witnesses, who identified the women's bodies, and how the survivors reacted (or didn't) react. The women's stories are very thorough and viewed from different angles. I found it to be an interesting read.

In 1888, five women were killed by the person who would be called Jack the Ripper. The killings were horrific- they weren’t just killed, but disemboweled- and the newspapers of the time made a mint writing sensational stories about them. They characterized the women as ‘prostitutes’, and nothing more was known about them. The image was that they were out on the street and were slain while working. In reality, while all the women were frightfully poor, only one was a sex worker, and she was killed in her bed at home. The author brings the five women to life. I was amazed at how much could be learned about these women from existing records. Census records, records in the old workhouses, prison records, pension records, ledgers for various businesses, military discharge papers, school records, registers of births, deaths, and weddings- she must have spent a huge amount of time, combing through these primary resources. Then a huge number of books that were about conditions in Victorian days, which painted the backdrop for the lives of these women. It turns out that they led hard lives; that they had been homeless at times and had to sleep outside, they had been in workhouses, that they were all victims of alcoholism, and that society was pretty much set up against them from the start. The poor rarely had access to schooling, so jobs other than manual labor were closed to them. Women were paid very little for their labor; they almost had to have a man for the income if they wanted to live inside. If their man cheated, beat them, spent all the money on alcohol, or left them, they were up creek. One of the women *did* have a man, but on her last night there was only enough money for one of them to sleep inside, and it was her turn to sleep outside. This book portrays them women who didn’t always make the right choices, but they had precious few to choose from. They had all the hopes, dreams, and cares that everyone has; they were not just put on earth to be victims of the Ripper. It’s about time they are shown to be human beings. ‘The Five’ does this admirably.

I try not to give 5 stars too often, this really is a terrific book. It's hard to put a finger on it, but the writing style is more narrative than "facts" and allows you to make fundamental connections. For example, we learn that Yellow (tulip) Poplars and Black Locusts are shade intolerant and therefore will not develop as under story. I can now look out off my back deck and understand why I have tall stands of tulip poplars there or why you see Black Locusts along highways, humans created places with plenty of sunlight. It's not original with this book, of course, but dividing up chapters on plant communities helps you understand of what's going in a particular evironoment.I can go on but for a guy like me, occasional hiker from Pennsylvania down to the Smokies can now make more sense of what I'm seeing, whether on looking out over quartzite cliffs or sitting next to a waterfall. Learning that narrative first makes learning all the details easier. In addition, this book is is quality, good paper, crisp photos, sturdy binding and again, explanations that are more a readable dialogue than just detail. (I have other books for distinguishing species, eg whether twigs are fuzzy or not) There are also interesting asides: ginseng, hemlock agelids, wild boars (!) in the southern Appalachians... Like an added bonus feature, the book lists "selected natural areas" a few of my future summer walks are already being planned. If you want to see Appalachian environments not simply as the staging but as the actor, buy this book.

This is a great book for anyone interested in the plants of the Southern Appalachians and how they interact with each other to form unique communities, but it seems mostly targeted at serious naturalists. It looks like a useful resource for botany and ecology students, in particular studying the flora of the Southern Appalachians. I find it a bit too heavy to carry around as a field guide, so I use it more as a reference and leave it in the car rather than take it on a hike. But the information it provides is highly valuable and has helped me with identifying some plants common in certain rare ecosystems that I haven't been able to find in any of the other wildflower books I own. What is unique about this book is its organization into plant communities. You will find photo keys and community descriptions with lists of plants typical e.g. for spruce-fir forest, high elevation outcrops, or mountain bogs. It is obvious that the author knows these plant communities very well. As someone who loves hiking in the area and experiencing the seasons in the different ecosystems along the trails, I felt like revisiting certain locations and meeting old friends again when reading through the community descriptions. If you know the community you are hiking through, the book's organization also makes it very easy to identify the common plants along the trail. The plant profiles are rich in information and the pictures are gorgeous and helpful with identifications though smallish. Most are half the size of a credit card or smaller. What I like about this book is that it does not only consider wildflowers, but the entire plant community including non-flowering trees, shrubs and ferns. Even some commonly encountered lichens are included in the plant profiles (even though they are not actually plants). As such, it allows for a much broader understanding of the members of a particular community and their significance and interactions compared to books that only present the flowering plants. The back of the book contains a glossary of botanical terms, descriptions of natural areas that are helpful for planning your next wildflower hike or botany class field trip, indices of scientific as well as common plant names, and a few line drawings illustrating the terminology used to describe basic plant structures. All in all, it's a wonderful book and an instant favorite, not just for me but also other naturalists I've talked to while out in the mountains.

I live in Georgia (the Piedmont region) and I love taking this book out into the woods with me. It's a great overview of the areas wildflower communities, and helps me identify what I'm looking at. You can also generalize the type of plant community you are in based on what you see around you and how the plants are organized in the book. A great tool for an ecologist or an amateur naturalist.

This is the fourth plant ID book I purchased, and it is now easily the one I reach for most. It's basically several books in one, with basic information that assists with identification being complemented by useful features about ecosystems and what plant life to look for based on section of the forest and known specimen. The images are a limited to make room for the additional sections, but the content is concise and the completeness of the catalog was a pleasant surprise.

Finally! A field guide that organizes wildflowers by communities rather than family groups. It makes more sense to start ID'ing plants by their preferred habitat rather than nonsensically combing through species alphabetically. Great descriptions about communities in the Piedmont and Blue Ridge too. Please make this book for the Southeastern Plain too.

I have many guidebooks to flora of the Southeast, but this one adds a holistic picture that is unparalleled. While books that cover trees, wildflowers, herbs or shrubs are all helpful in identifying and understanding individual plants, this one gives the context that you need in order to understand the ecosystem itself. While almost no environment is uniformly a single "community," Spira's descriptions will give you a lens through which to view the complexities that might otherwise confound you when trying to understand where you live or hike.I have read certain sections over and over, and each time I get something new from it. This book has helped me decide the best ways to restore the ecosystem of a very remote property we own, and has given me a new perspective on stewardship of land in the Southern Appalachians. Thank you, Timothy Spira.

This review is hard for me, so I will break it down.Content of the books: 5 stars - excellent.Physical quality of the books - 3 stars.First let me hit on the physical quality of the books - the only reason this review isn't a solid 5 stars. The first and third books are made well, with white, even pages and beautiful dust jackets with a matte finish covering a glossy inside. The second book, however, is where my issue lies. I am not for sure if this issue is consistent of all the sets being a sold or if mine was a fluke, but the second book consists of yellower, cheaper pages cut in some sort of ridiculous jagged angle. I could have dealt with all three books this way, but it bothers me that just the second one was like this. Now for the actual books themselves: they are incredible. I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a trilogy, a dystopian series, or just a good book to become immersed in. It might say Young Adult in the category.ii am almost 28 - far from being a young adult myself. The story is told from a split perspective of the two main characters. At first I disliked this, as this is usually not my favorite type of format. However, this set up was nicely executed, both in writing and the format of the pages. Each character has his/her own font type and font color, as well as a heading at the top of ever right page to remind you whose perspective you are reading. I have never witnessed it so beautifully executed quite like this in the past. The story is incredible and I breezed through the series in three days (I did have to work and sleep). I was captivated wholeheartedly by this series and wanted to keep reading despite hunger, obligations, and a need for sleep. The writing is beautiful and easily captivates the audience. The level of detail is excellent enough that one knows exactly what everything looks like, while not being overwhelming in a Wuthering Heights/Romanticism kind of way. These books are beautifully written and incredible. If the jagged pages is an issue, I won suggest purchasing the books separately (but then you won't receive the free bonus) or take your chances that mine was a fluke. Either way, this series is worth your time.

June and Day come from two very different backgrounds, June came from an elite family while Day lived in one of the poor sectors of the Republic. After getting to know each other their entire lives change for better or for worse and now they are more or less in the same situation. After escaping from Day‘s execution June and Day are on the run from the entire Republic.Day is injured, his brother and only living family is either a prisoner or a lab rat of the Republic.June has nowhere to go after leaving everything she knows behind her to save Day.With nothing left to loose they take an offer from the Patriots that are fighting against the government of the Republic. All they have to do in return for the Patriots help with all their problems is to assassinate the new Elector, Anden, after his father‘s recent death. But in those troublesome times after the old Elector‘s death where the iron grip that the government had over it‘s people is starting to falter who can Day and June really trust and how much can their newly formed relationship handle. This like the first book was a fast paced read with some twists and turns. We get to know more about the world that the story takes place in and we get to know the main characters better. I really liked this book and can‘t wait to read the last book in the trilgogy to see how this ends.

In this second book in the Legend series, Day and June become involved in another series of non-stop adventures as they try to carve out a life for themselves after escaping from the clutches of the Republic. At the end of Legend, the first book in the series, June had just broken Day out of prison with the help of the rebel group known as the Patriots. The Patriots, however, refused to help them leave town without payment of some kind. But now that June and Day have traveled to Los Vegas on their own, they join up with the Patriots again, meeting with one of their high leaders, a man who calls himself Razor. And he seems to be satisfied that their pledging their loyalty to the Patriots will be payment enough. So June and Day embark on a series of adventures working, first with, then against the Patriots. In the meantime, the old Elector Primo, head of the Republic, has died and been replaced by his son, Anden, without missing a beat. The first project the Patriots want them to undertake is Anden’s murder.June’s part of this plot is supposed to be to lure Anden to the place where the Patriots are lying in wait for them. But in meeting with Anden in the early stages of gaining his trust, she discovers that he seems to be anxious to abandon his father’s obnoxious policies in favor of treating the common people better. June tries to warn Anden of the plot at the last minute, but somehow his military escort takes him to the site of the assassination attempt in spite of his orders. He barely escapes with his life, and June’s distrust of Razor appears to be validated.Day, meanwhile, has held back from an all-out attack on Anden based on what appeared to be a signal from June, and the two of them are now forced to flee from both the Patriots and the Republic. They wind up in the Colonies. The Colonies look impressive at first glance. And they welcome Day and June with open arms. But they don’t seem to know anything about what the Patriots have been up to. And then Kaede shows up and tells Day the real truth about the assassination attempt. It appears that the Republic is a military dictatorship with everybody working either directly or indirectly for the government. But the Colonies are run by four giant corporations who control everything people do just as the government of the Republic does. They appear more prosperous on the surface. But are they really any better in the long run?Day and June agree to return with Kaede in an attempt to keep Razor from taking over control of the Republic. Will they succeed? Will it help?I can't get access to write a review of Champion, the third book in the series, so I am going to append it to this review since this is what comes up when I try to go to a review for Champion.Champion is also a 5-star book. It is worth going all the way through the series for. This final book in the Legend is as exciting and action-filled as the earlier installments, and the plot is even more unexpected. The Colonies report a new plague racing along their war front. Abandoning their peace negotiations with Anden, they accuse the Republic of starting it (and maybe they did) and demand a cure NOW, or they will attack the Republic with everything they have, and they have struck a new alliance with Africa that should give them an overpowering advantage. They allow the Republic a few days to develop the cure, but then they go on and attack well before time is up.Day, June, and the remnants of the Patriots, who they just happen to find in an underground train station where evacuation of the capital is underway, launch one of their guerrilla attacks on the Colonies’ invasion force. The Republic comes up with a plan to thwart the Colonies’ plans, but it is subject to a myriad of twists and turns. And meanwhile, Day is battling for his life due to problems that have little to do with the war, while June finds herself in direct danger from the traitorous Commander Jameson who has escaped the death sentence she was supposed to have undergone and is now specifically targeting June with her robot-like intensity. It doesn’t end like you would expect. In fact, it doesn’t even end like Day and June expect.

This is a great set! I love Tomine's work because it's not always so aparantly autobiographical as with a lot of other GN's and alternative comics. Segments in 32 stories are short and sweet and at times hilarious. You can see the progression in his work from the first mini comic to the last (quality change of paper, color change, length of work and quality of images) It's interesting to see the development. Im just sad that I had to catch these extremely late, rather than get them one mini comic, anxiously waiting for the next! If you appriciate Tomine's work, you have to have this!

Adrian Tomine is a genius. His stories and art are more realistic than life itself. It's astonishing.I believe this specific collection was made especially for fans and admirers of Tomine's work. It's a precious opportunity to verify how a brilliant career begins. It's the origin of all his work. The first little book shows a young but serious and committed art work. The shocking part comes when you realize the gigantic evolution he accomplished in the sequential little books.Maybe this review is not as accurate as it should be, because I'm a serious admirer of his drawing AND writing. Maybe that'll influence my view in a too positive way. His work is the closest to perfection I've seen in comics, and I'll buy every single book that contains his material.

Adrian Tomine's work is as good as it was when he started. Some argue his earlier work is better. I say the people that say his earlier work are better can't read. All his work is equally honest and worth checking out! ENJOY all Adrians work! Look for Optic Nerve or anything by Adrian Tomine.

Loved every story and was very impressed with the packaging.

Great overview of Tomine's earlier work.

HOLY S***. This is one of the best comics I have ever read, I'm now obsessed with this guy. I've read Raymond Carver comparisons....

perfect read, great stories

This is a box of several reprints. The art is great, the stories are cool, and you can see progress of a great comic artist unfold before your eyes. Adrian Tomine is fantastic!

The content is very inline with the stated purpose ... The Weekend Navigator. Perhaps not enough for blue ocean cruising or circumnavigating but just right for the rest of us who know a little already and want to use electronic aids to navigation more effectively ... 5 stars for that. The copy of the book I have received is inkjet printed on unusually thin paper. The type size is small, the print is not crisp and grayish, the images and drawing are washed out and fuzzy. Not easy on the eyes and just plain substandard look and feel.Publisher, AMAZON, or somebody else is doing a disservice to this book and to the author by using cheap and fuzzy on-demand inkjet printing ... 1 star for that.Photos attached ... on the left side, this book's fuzzy page printed using inkjet printing process. On the right side, another book by the same author and publisher printed using traditional 4-COLOR PRESS process.

For most boaters, power or sail, this is your best bet for a single, clear, comprehensive guide to piloting and navigation. The author, Sweet, is very knowledgeable and takes a straightforward approach to navigation in the electronic age. He makes a strong case for developing the skills to navigate without relying on electronic Chartplotters and Global Positioning Systems (which CAN and DO fail, like any other electronic device); however, he does not condescend to the reader on this issue, nor does he exclude those electronic devices from consideration. On the contrary, the nicest aspect of this book is the way it INTEGRATES electronic and traditional means of piloting, showing you how each can complement the other in useful ways. The result is a book that will teach you how to understand and use your electronics better, while developing traditional navigational skills that may save your life (or at least save you some inconvenience) the next time your electronics go down.I've read a lot of books on navigation in the last 20 years. Sweet does a better-than-average job of explaining traditional piloting techniques in an accessible manner, with very nice illustrations that allow the reader to reflect on and absorb some of the abstract concepts involved. (Piloting is not hard, but it can feel overwhelming and confusing at first until you really "get" it.) Sweet is also one of the only authors I've come across who talks about electronic navigation methods as the normal reality for day-to-day navigation among most boaters (which it is!). Most other books relegate electronic devices to an isolated chapter, seem hopelessly out of date with regard to modern GPS innovations, and/or discuss electronic navigation as if it is an afterthought. Sweet talks as if he understands, realistically, that GPS will be the primary source of navigational information for the boaters he is addressing, and that is why his tone and approach come across so well. Along the way, he makes good recommendations about other resources to consult, such as Nigel Calder's definitive guide to reading a nautical chart, and to the free Coastal Explorer software that provides an excellent way to view NOAA raster charts for free on your computer. I am convinced of his credibility. This is a resource I would not hesitate to trust. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a clear and comprehensive guide to modern navigation.I would NOT buy the Kindle edition, since the illustrations in this book are very important to developing a full understanding of certain concepts, and would not likely display well on the Kindle (smaller, without color, etc.).

Reading book on e-reader so it's hard to flip between text and illustrations.Very well written and VERY informative.Highly recommended that hard copy be purchased for easy reference.

I used this book as a text for a boating safety course given by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Both the book and the course were outstanding

If you want a rare combination of smart tech and understandable language, this is the navigation user manual for you. In fact, it displays the handheld GPS I am using as my backup on the front cover. Can't say enough about how this book as integrated theory, practice and practical examples.

A great book for how most people navigate today. I completed the ASA navigation course, but its complete lack of GPS use and focus on complex math made for a steep learning curve, and I was not comfortable relying on it in practical applications without much more time on the water. This book uses a nice combination of paper charts and electronics, that actually works on the water. Being six years old, much of the specific tech has changed, but I was still able to use it with a new Garmin handheld chart-plotter to navigate my first three day charter in the Tampa Bay area. I wish I would have read it before purchasing a GPS as I would have purchased a more simple unit and invested more in other navigation areas.

I've got a half dozen books on coastal navigation (piloting actually) and all are good, but Bob Sweet's book integrates GPS with traditional piloting methods in a way none of the rest do. Most books are either all about getting the most out of your GPS, or they concentrate on traditional charting methods then update the subject with separate chapters on GPS, RADAR, LORAN, etc. This book approaches 21 first century piloting as an integrated plan for most conditions that shows the roles played by your charts, your electronics, and your common sea sense in a balanced, minute by minute situational awareness where no single tool predominates. In short, Sweet's book answers the question I always had after reading other books: "OK, so how to I put all this together on the bay with only two hands, two eyes and one brain? This book shows how to do it without overloading yourself.A well planned book, manufactured nicely with good paper and color.I recommend this book.

This is a great resource for the recreational boater that wants to know the essentials of navigating using the electronic tools that are available to the boater today. It explains the principles of navigation in an easy to understand manner and is quite comprehensive.
