Mark Marimen was born in Merrillville, IN, and received his master's degree from Duke University. The author of five other books, including Haunted Indiana I-V and School Spirits, he currently lives in Crown Point, IN, with his family. James A. I first saw this book in a local Barnes and Noble bookstore. By the time I was ready to purchase a copy as a Christmas gift for a relative, it was gone! Luckily, Amazon came to the rescue. After I received the first copy and read it thoroughly, I purchased two more as gifts for friends (one who lived in Indiana, one who went to college in Indiana and lives in Ohio.) Since that first purchase, I have also purchased (from Amazon) Weird Kentucky and Weird Ohio, both as gifts for people residing in those states. Because the items are so random and amusing, they automatically suggest fun day trips for residents. Wouldn't you just love to visit historic French Lick (and send a postcard to your buddies?) Or enjoy some amusement parks rides and visit Santa at Santa Claus, IN? I am a lifelong resident of Indiana, and have lived in several cities there; however, there were still many local attractions of which I had never heard. These books are written in a chatty, exciting manner, and make great coffee table "conversation starter" books. Your friends will love them!

I liked the odd stories that maybe the locals in their towns may know, but the rest of us may not. And, the haunt spots are very interesting too for you local ghost hunters.

I bought two books as gifts for my sister one of which was this book and the other a coffee table book of Indiana landscape photos. Shortly after receiving the book she called me and couldn't stop telling me how much she liked this book. She has lived in Indiana her whole life and had personal knowledge of a few of the locations but still thought it was great. The only reason I did not give it a 5 star is because I couldn't review it online before I purchased it. As I do not live in Indiana I would like to have been able to review it before purchasing it as a gift.

I purchased this book to put in a gift basket for a couple of close friends who were moving to Indianapolis, Indiana. While appearing to be more of a 'children's' book at first glance, I found myself, a 26 year old pseudo-adult, pleasantly captivated by its contents. There are all sorts of interesting, unique, and (sometimes) creepy stories and pictures throughout the book, which make it great for all audiences. It will make a good coffee table book because it's great for conversation! Check out the rest of the 'Weird' series if you have the opportunity.

I have had this book for quite a while and really enjoy it. It was a gift from my son because I kept reading his. Had a house full of company one day and noticed someone (who usually doesn't like to read!) reading various stories. He really liked what he had read so I bought it for him for Christmas. He was very pleased to receive it.

My son checked out this book at his local school library and I strarted reading it. Very fun information although a little outdated maybe. Still an interesting read for anyone young or old. Would like to see the addresses of some of the places so we can go visit. Some rare finds in Indiana I didn't even know existed. Shipping was very fast and book was in great condition and packaged nicely.

I moved to Indian and didn't know the lore of the area so I bought this book to find some of the hidden secrets. I was not dissapointed. The pictures are nice and the storys are interesting. It makes a nice table book as well as a referance to storys. It is not in depth but this is not a book on research so that is ok. I do enjoy it and many friends have as well. It is out on loan right now. :)

David Hay's Data Model Patterns is a foundational work on relational data modeling. He has written several excellent books since this one and the world of IT has changed in many ways since then, but the principles of good relational data architecture haven't. For data warehouse dimensional modeling, I would point you a different way -- Kimball's books as a foundation, Chris Adamson's Star Schema for a full design overview -- but, for modeling the enterprise, for understanding data modeling at a fundamental level, this is the book. David is passionate about his subject and convincing in his approach. You may have trouble even finding a tool that will allow you to model the way the book recommends (although, Oracle SQL Data Modeler is now a free app and SAP's PowerDesigner has Barker notation, included nested subtypes, and Hay has another book describing his adaptation of UML to model "his" way), but working your way through this short book, you will understand data modeling and how to-do it well.

In his own data modeling consulting, David Hay discovered that for all enterprises, there were common patterns of entities and relationships in various topical areas, whatever the organization. So he set about capturing those ideas in very high-level data models, and he put them together in a book.This book is quite an intellectual accomplishment, because he has boiled down many different areas into their essentials and has captured those essentials. If you face a data modelling problem, it's likely that one or more of his patterns will work for you and jump-start your efforts.These are high level models, and don't take you all the way to database design. You'll still have a lot of design decisions to make. But the framework given in these models will help you explore your own problem to discover if you've covered all the eventualities that Mr. Hay considered in his work.

I've done some data modeling, and much more process modeling, so I was familiar with Mr. Hay's objectives with respect to data and restricting the model to logical representations of data, whatever that may be.About six chapters into this book, I realize that while I could continue through to the end, I would likely find this more useful as a companion to a problem. I think the majority of non-academic readers, software practitioners if you will, will extract the necessary value from owning this book given a specific objective, i.e. I have to develop a work management model from scratch, and these are my (current) business rules.The book covers so many kinds of models that it's entirely possible a reader will have no practical frame of reference, such as the chapter on accounting. Modern accounting software is primarily off-the-shelf, so developing a data model for it isn't something very common today. However, the smart developer understands that living "in the spaces between" software is a very good line of business, so to that end knowing what an ideal data model might have is certainly valuable ammunition when weighing vendor claims and evaluating solutions.Because it lacks that sort of accessible readability, I am withholding a star. I'd have withheld a half-star if it were possible; I believe the book has great value to a developer or analyst.Fred

Meh. It's OK. You will not learn very many "real world scenarios" here on how to model your data, or database. By far, "The Data Model Resource Book" is THE BEST book on data modeling, and provides sooo many real world scenarios that you come away understanding how to model everything. This book is OK, and may add some supplemental information that wasn't learned in the other above book, but you really won't accomplish much reading this.

I have been in Data modeling for now more than 10 years and thought I knew what I was talking about. Hay proved me wrong. Even the Universal model which I was so proud to have discovered on my own is there in almost all possible uses and combination (minus one, but I'll only share it with the VERY interested ones). I have had this book at hand for almost a year now and it is one of the few I consult almost daily. My only grudge is it is based on the Oracle methodology. But this is a very personal grudge.

I ordered this book from the used book store link on the product home page. The seller claimed that this book was 'Like New'. I don't know how they distinguish New and 'Like New'. This book is absolutely new and it even has the wonderful smell of a new book! The contents of the book speak for themselves. This is a must have for anyone even remotely involved in Data Modeling. The concepts here are so fundamental that most popular ERP systems today use these concepts.

i have had the pleasure of working with david on a just few occasions going back to our days at Oracle in the early 90's. this is the book you need to study if you plan on doing any serious relational database system. excellent insights, practical, it will make a difference in your design and development work.

This book is one of my go-to books when I need to put together a data model based on limited input from the client. It enables me to quickly provide a data model diagram that is a decent starting point for discussion.

Good book, good information, but missing the basic nomenclature like diagrams of firearms and their specific names and locations,IE; grip, safety, hammer, trigger, muzzle, front sight, rear sight, ect... you get the point. This makes me wonder if this book would be better as an introductory text, rather than a entry level.

This book provides good beginner basic information. I highly recommend it for somebody just beginning their journey into their use of firearms. This book provides a wide variety of information without getting too bogged down into boring details.

Very comprehensive manual on Firearms Safety. Beginner to advanced shooters should read this manual in its entirety. Will use this in our NRA classes as one of our required text books.

This was particularly helpful to me, a newbie when it comes to guns. The price was great, and it contained a lot of good information.

Great book to brush up and gun safety and to have in the house along with your firearms to review. You can never have too much safety with firearms! Easy to read and very good pictures!

Lots of chatter and conflicting info on firearm safety, with self-appointed blowhards sure to kill themselves or others because they refuse to limit themselves with rules, but the NRA leads the field with their practical and understandable content.

We bought this book as a primer for our kids to read as they get more interested in shooting sports and firearms usage. We plan to use the content of the book as a jumping-off point for further conversations about responsible firearms ownership/use.The Good: there is a breadth of content covered here, revolving around basic firearm types/styles, safe handling while shooting, and before/after shooting safety; the physical aspects of the book (cover, paper thickness, etc.) are good choices for the cost of the book--pages feel thicker than normal, and the binding has held up.Neither good or bad decision points: if you've ever been around firearms before, and you've got an understanding of basic firearm safety already, this book is NOT for you; if you're curious about firearms usage, and/or you have someone you're training in firearms safety (like a friend/parent/spouse/child/etc.), this might be a good book to help start that safety conversation.The bad: There are many, many, many poor and/or questionable formatting/organization/editing issues with this book. With regard to formatting, it looks like someone was trying to make too much content fit into too few pages, probably to keep from having to pay for an additional register to be included in the printed book. Margins are too small; places where you'd expect page breaks or empty pages to be (between chapters, for example), there are none; there's often insufficient differentiation between chapter titles, heading, and subheadings, so that it's hard to determine which sections go with which, and which ones are new information.I expected something better than this from the NRA.

So what’s with the recent onslaught of grid quilting books?It’s a great way to compartmentalize your approach if you are new or overwhelmed. Grids provide a foundation, a starting point, and a path forward. They please the eye, and are amenable to both long arm and domestic machines.The best book on the topic so far is The Grid Design Workbook by Cindy Seitz-Krug. It is a beautiful publication with outstanding information, methods, examples, and tips. Find out why you should never leave your marked quilt in a hot car. Learn the importance of echo-quilting your main motifs.And try, just try, to choose only 1 favorite from the gallery photos. My vote - today - is for Cindy Needham’s “Life is Fragile … Handle With Prayer”. It is a black and white clamshell beauty whose lacy effects defy description and adequate breath intake.This inventive author uses both whole-cloth and pieced quilts throughout the book. In fact, the book is organized mostly by the grids that create the “blocks” of the whole-cloth quilt on the cover. I was looking all over the book to find a photo of that project in its entirety, getting quite frustrated despite viewing the drop-dead (but get up again) lovely examples and gallery shots. Hint: look near the very last page.Despite the fact that quilting books are getting shorter lately (yes, we’ve noticed this, just like we remember when canned tuna fish lost some weight), consider putting The Grid Design Workbook on your buy list. Or gift list.

This is even more useful than I had hoped. It only "wastes" 4 pages on tools and such and even those pages are half filled with useful pictures, and some good tips. I very much appreciate a book that only briefly discusses information that should already be known by the reader. The rest of the book? Absolutely wonderful! Beautiful and useful pictures - I especially like the side by side ones of using matching versus contrasting threads on the designs. Some of the work I already knew how to do, but I like her stitch sequencing much better!! I loved that she showed each stitch in multiple quilts. Overall, the perfect blend of inspiration and how to. And when I got to the end and was wishing she had put in grids for practicing some of it, there they were! I don't usually write book reviews, but I saw there were only 4 here, so I felt compelled to do so. I do not know the author and was not asked to do this. I paid advertised price. Just a happy customer.

I've read many, many quilting books and never reviewed any of them. This book is fantastic. Cindy is a great teacher. Explanations are simple, but completely explained and demonstrated. Pictures and diagrams complete the picture. But Cindy goes one step further by demonstrating what can go wrong when you don't follow directions. She really teaches you how to look at designs not in the book and simplify them to make them your own. Thanks much Cindy.
