I try not to give 5 stars too often, this really is a terrific book. It's hard to put a finger on it, but the writing style is more narrative than "facts" and allows you to make fundamental connections. For example, we learn that Yellow (tulip) Poplars and Black Locusts are shade intolerant and therefore will not develop as under story. I can now look out off my back deck and understand why I have tall stands of tulip poplars there or why you see Black Locusts along highways, humans created places with plenty of sunlight. It's not original with this book, of course, but dividing up chapters on plant communities helps you understand of what's going in a particular evironoment.I can go on but for a guy like me, occasional hiker from Pennsylvania down to the Smokies can now make more sense of what I'm seeing, whether on looking out over quartzite cliffs or sitting next to a waterfall. Learning that narrative first makes learning all the details easier. In addition, this book is is quality, good paper, crisp photos, sturdy binding and again, explanations that are more a readable dialogue than just detail. (I have other books for distinguishing species, eg whether twigs are fuzzy or not) There are also interesting asides: ginseng, hemlock agelids, wild boars (!) in the southern Appalachians... Like an added bonus feature, the book lists "selected natural areas" a few of my future summer walks are already being planned. If you want to see Appalachian environments not simply as the staging but as the actor, buy this book.

This is a great book for anyone interested in the plants of the Southern Appalachians and how they interact with each other to form unique communities, but it seems mostly targeted at serious naturalists. It looks like a useful resource for botany and ecology students, in particular studying the flora of the Southern Appalachians. I find it a bit too heavy to carry around as a field guide, so I use it more as a reference and leave it in the car rather than take it on a hike. But the information it provides is highly valuable and has helped me with identifying some plants common in certain rare ecosystems that I haven't been able to find in any of the other wildflower books I own. What is unique about this book is its organization into plant communities. You will find photo keys and community descriptions with lists of plants typical e.g. for spruce-fir forest, high elevation outcrops, or mountain bogs. It is obvious that the author knows these plant communities very well. As someone who loves hiking in the area and experiencing the seasons in the different ecosystems along the trails, I felt like revisiting certain locations and meeting old friends again when reading through the community descriptions. If you know the community you are hiking through, the book's organization also makes it very easy to identify the common plants along the trail. The plant profiles are rich in information and the pictures are gorgeous and helpful with identifications though smallish. Most are half the size of a credit card or smaller. What I like about this book is that it does not only consider wildflowers, but the entire plant community including non-flowering trees, shrubs and ferns. Even some commonly encountered lichens are included in the plant profiles (even though they are not actually plants). As such, it allows for a much broader understanding of the members of a particular community and their significance and interactions compared to books that only present the flowering plants. The back of the book contains a glossary of botanical terms, descriptions of natural areas that are helpful for planning your next wildflower hike or botany class field trip, indices of scientific as well as common plant names, and a few line drawings illustrating the terminology used to describe basic plant structures. All in all, it's a wonderful book and an instant favorite, not just for me but also other naturalists I've talked to while out in the mountains.

I live in Georgia (the Piedmont region) and I love taking this book out into the woods with me. It's a great overview of the areas wildflower communities, and helps me identify what I'm looking at. You can also generalize the type of plant community you are in based on what you see around you and how the plants are organized in the book. A great tool for an ecologist or an amateur naturalist.

This is the fourth plant ID book I purchased, and it is now easily the one I reach for most. It's basically several books in one, with basic information that assists with identification being complemented by useful features about ecosystems and what plant life to look for based on section of the forest and known specimen. The images are a limited to make room for the additional sections, but the content is concise and the completeness of the catalog was a pleasant surprise.

Finally! A field guide that organizes wildflowers by communities rather than family groups. It makes more sense to start ID'ing plants by their preferred habitat rather than nonsensically combing through species alphabetically. Great descriptions about communities in the Piedmont and Blue Ridge too. Please make this book for the Southeastern Plain too.

I have many guidebooks to flora of the Southeast, but this one adds a holistic picture that is unparalleled. While books that cover trees, wildflowers, herbs or shrubs are all helpful in identifying and understanding individual plants, this one gives the context that you need in order to understand the ecosystem itself. While almost no environment is uniformly a single "community," Spira's descriptions will give you a lens through which to view the complexities that might otherwise confound you when trying to understand where you live or hike.I have read certain sections over and over, and each time I get something new from it. This book has helped me decide the best ways to restore the ecosystem of a very remote property we own, and has given me a new perspective on stewardship of land in the Southern Appalachians. Thank you, Timothy Spira.

This review is hard for me, so I will break it down.Content of the books: 5 stars - excellent.Physical quality of the books - 3 stars.First let me hit on the physical quality of the books - the only reason this review isn't a solid 5 stars. The first and third books are made well, with white, even pages and beautiful dust jackets with a matte finish covering a glossy inside. The second book, however, is where my issue lies. I am not for sure if this issue is consistent of all the sets being a sold or if mine was a fluke, but the second book consists of yellower, cheaper pages cut in some sort of ridiculous jagged angle. I could have dealt with all three books this way, but it bothers me that just the second one was like this. Now for the actual books themselves: they are incredible. I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a trilogy, a dystopian series, or just a good book to become immersed in. It might say Young Adult in the category.ii am almost 28 - far from being a young adult myself. The story is told from a split perspective of the two main characters. At first I disliked this, as this is usually not my favorite type of format. However, this set up was nicely executed, both in writing and the format of the pages. Each character has his/her own font type and font color, as well as a heading at the top of ever right page to remind you whose perspective you are reading. I have never witnessed it so beautifully executed quite like this in the past. The story is incredible and I breezed through the series in three days (I did have to work and sleep). I was captivated wholeheartedly by this series and wanted to keep reading despite hunger, obligations, and a need for sleep. The writing is beautiful and easily captivates the audience. The level of detail is excellent enough that one knows exactly what everything looks like, while not being overwhelming in a Wuthering Heights/Romanticism kind of way. These books are beautifully written and incredible. If the jagged pages is an issue, I won suggest purchasing the books separately (but then you won't receive the free bonus) or take your chances that mine was a fluke. Either way, this series is worth your time.

June and Day come from two very different backgrounds, June came from an elite family while Day lived in one of the poor sectors of the Republic. After getting to know each other their entire lives change for better or for worse and now they are more or less in the same situation. After escaping from Day‘s execution June and Day are on the run from the entire Republic.Day is injured, his brother and only living family is either a prisoner or a lab rat of the Republic.June has nowhere to go after leaving everything she knows behind her to save Day.With nothing left to loose they take an offer from the Patriots that are fighting against the government of the Republic. All they have to do in return for the Patriots help with all their problems is to assassinate the new Elector, Anden, after his father‘s recent death. But in those troublesome times after the old Elector‘s death where the iron grip that the government had over it‘s people is starting to falter who can Day and June really trust and how much can their newly formed relationship handle. This like the first book was a fast paced read with some twists and turns. We get to know more about the world that the story takes place in and we get to know the main characters better. I really liked this book and can‘t wait to read the last book in the trilgogy to see how this ends.

In this second book in the Legend series, Day and June become involved in another series of non-stop adventures as they try to carve out a life for themselves after escaping from the clutches of the Republic. At the end of Legend, the first book in the series, June had just broken Day out of prison with the help of the rebel group known as the Patriots. The Patriots, however, refused to help them leave town without payment of some kind. But now that June and Day have traveled to Los Vegas on their own, they join up with the Patriots again, meeting with one of their high leaders, a man who calls himself Razor. And he seems to be satisfied that their pledging their loyalty to the Patriots will be payment enough. So June and Day embark on a series of adventures working, first with, then against the Patriots. In the meantime, the old Elector Primo, head of the Republic, has died and been replaced by his son, Anden, without missing a beat. The first project the Patriots want them to undertake is Anden’s murder.June’s part of this plot is supposed to be to lure Anden to the place where the Patriots are lying in wait for them. But in meeting with Anden in the early stages of gaining his trust, she discovers that he seems to be anxious to abandon his father’s obnoxious policies in favor of treating the common people better. June tries to warn Anden of the plot at the last minute, but somehow his military escort takes him to the site of the assassination attempt in spite of his orders. He barely escapes with his life, and June’s distrust of Razor appears to be validated.Day, meanwhile, has held back from an all-out attack on Anden based on what appeared to be a signal from June, and the two of them are now forced to flee from both the Patriots and the Republic. They wind up in the Colonies. The Colonies look impressive at first glance. And they welcome Day and June with open arms. But they don’t seem to know anything about what the Patriots have been up to. And then Kaede shows up and tells Day the real truth about the assassination attempt. It appears that the Republic is a military dictatorship with everybody working either directly or indirectly for the government. But the Colonies are run by four giant corporations who control everything people do just as the government of the Republic does. They appear more prosperous on the surface. But are they really any better in the long run?Day and June agree to return with Kaede in an attempt to keep Razor from taking over control of the Republic. Will they succeed? Will it help?I can't get access to write a review of Champion, the third book in the series, so I am going to append it to this review since this is what comes up when I try to go to a review for Champion.Champion is also a 5-star book. It is worth going all the way through the series for. This final book in the Legend is as exciting and action-filled as the earlier installments, and the plot is even more unexpected. The Colonies report a new plague racing along their war front. Abandoning their peace negotiations with Anden, they accuse the Republic of starting it (and maybe they did) and demand a cure NOW, or they will attack the Republic with everything they have, and they have struck a new alliance with Africa that should give them an overpowering advantage. They allow the Republic a few days to develop the cure, but then they go on and attack well before time is up.Day, June, and the remnants of the Patriots, who they just happen to find in an underground train station where evacuation of the capital is underway, launch one of their guerrilla attacks on the Colonies’ invasion force. The Republic comes up with a plan to thwart the Colonies’ plans, but it is subject to a myriad of twists and turns. And meanwhile, Day is battling for his life due to problems that have little to do with the war, while June finds herself in direct danger from the traitorous Commander Jameson who has escaped the death sentence she was supposed to have undergone and is now specifically targeting June with her robot-like intensity. It doesn’t end like you would expect. In fact, it doesn’t even end like Day and June expect.

This is a great set! I love Tomine's work because it's not always so aparantly autobiographical as with a lot of other GN's and alternative comics. Segments in 32 stories are short and sweet and at times hilarious. You can see the progression in his work from the first mini comic to the last (quality change of paper, color change, length of work and quality of images) It's interesting to see the development. Im just sad that I had to catch these extremely late, rather than get them one mini comic, anxiously waiting for the next! If you appriciate Tomine's work, you have to have this!

Adrian Tomine is a genius. His stories and art are more realistic than life itself. It's astonishing.I believe this specific collection was made especially for fans and admirers of Tomine's work. It's a precious opportunity to verify how a brilliant career begins. It's the origin of all his work. The first little book shows a young but serious and committed art work. The shocking part comes when you realize the gigantic evolution he accomplished in the sequential little books.Maybe this review is not as accurate as it should be, because I'm a serious admirer of his drawing AND writing. Maybe that'll influence my view in a too positive way. His work is the closest to perfection I've seen in comics, and I'll buy every single book that contains his material.

Adrian Tomine's work is as good as it was when he started. Some argue his earlier work is better. I say the people that say his earlier work are better can't read. All his work is equally honest and worth checking out! ENJOY all Adrians work! Look for Optic Nerve or anything by Adrian Tomine.

Loved every story and was very impressed with the packaging.

Great overview of Tomine's earlier work.

HOLY S***. This is one of the best comics I have ever read, I'm now obsessed with this guy. I've read Raymond Carver comparisons....

perfect read, great stories

This is a box of several reprints. The art is great, the stories are cool, and you can see progress of a great comic artist unfold before your eyes. Adrian Tomine is fantastic!

The content is very inline with the stated purpose ... The Weekend Navigator. Perhaps not enough for blue ocean cruising or circumnavigating but just right for the rest of us who know a little already and want to use electronic aids to navigation more effectively ... 5 stars for that. The copy of the book I have received is inkjet printed on unusually thin paper. The type size is small, the print is not crisp and grayish, the images and drawing are washed out and fuzzy. Not easy on the eyes and just plain substandard look and feel.Publisher, AMAZON, or somebody else is doing a disservice to this book and to the author by using cheap and fuzzy on-demand inkjet printing ... 1 star for that.Photos attached ... on the left side, this book's fuzzy page printed using inkjet printing process. On the right side, another book by the same author and publisher printed using traditional 4-COLOR PRESS process.

For most boaters, power or sail, this is your best bet for a single, clear, comprehensive guide to piloting and navigation. The author, Sweet, is very knowledgeable and takes a straightforward approach to navigation in the electronic age. He makes a strong case for developing the skills to navigate without relying on electronic Chartplotters and Global Positioning Systems (which CAN and DO fail, like any other electronic device); however, he does not condescend to the reader on this issue, nor does he exclude those electronic devices from consideration. On the contrary, the nicest aspect of this book is the way it INTEGRATES electronic and traditional means of piloting, showing you how each can complement the other in useful ways. The result is a book that will teach you how to understand and use your electronics better, while developing traditional navigational skills that may save your life (or at least save you some inconvenience) the next time your electronics go down.I've read a lot of books on navigation in the last 20 years. Sweet does a better-than-average job of explaining traditional piloting techniques in an accessible manner, with very nice illustrations that allow the reader to reflect on and absorb some of the abstract concepts involved. (Piloting is not hard, but it can feel overwhelming and confusing at first until you really "get" it.) Sweet is also one of the only authors I've come across who talks about electronic navigation methods as the normal reality for day-to-day navigation among most boaters (which it is!). Most other books relegate electronic devices to an isolated chapter, seem hopelessly out of date with regard to modern GPS innovations, and/or discuss electronic navigation as if it is an afterthought. Sweet talks as if he understands, realistically, that GPS will be the primary source of navigational information for the boaters he is addressing, and that is why his tone and approach come across so well. Along the way, he makes good recommendations about other resources to consult, such as Nigel Calder's definitive guide to reading a nautical chart, and to the free Coastal Explorer software that provides an excellent way to view NOAA raster charts for free on your computer. I am convinced of his credibility. This is a resource I would not hesitate to trust. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a clear and comprehensive guide to modern navigation.I would NOT buy the Kindle edition, since the illustrations in this book are very important to developing a full understanding of certain concepts, and would not likely display well on the Kindle (smaller, without color, etc.).

Reading book on e-reader so it's hard to flip between text and illustrations.Very well written and VERY informative.Highly recommended that hard copy be purchased for easy reference.

I used this book as a text for a boating safety course given by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Both the book and the course were outstanding

If you want a rare combination of smart tech and understandable language, this is the navigation user manual for you. In fact, it displays the handheld GPS I am using as my backup on the front cover. Can't say enough about how this book as integrated theory, practice and practical examples.

A great book for how most people navigate today. I completed the ASA navigation course, but its complete lack of GPS use and focus on complex math made for a steep learning curve, and I was not comfortable relying on it in practical applications without much more time on the water. This book uses a nice combination of paper charts and electronics, that actually works on the water. Being six years old, much of the specific tech has changed, but I was still able to use it with a new Garmin handheld chart-plotter to navigate my first three day charter in the Tampa Bay area. I wish I would have read it before purchasing a GPS as I would have purchased a more simple unit and invested more in other navigation areas.

I've got a half dozen books on coastal navigation (piloting actually) and all are good, but Bob Sweet's book integrates GPS with traditional piloting methods in a way none of the rest do. Most books are either all about getting the most out of your GPS, or they concentrate on traditional charting methods then update the subject with separate chapters on GPS, RADAR, LORAN, etc. This book approaches 21 first century piloting as an integrated plan for most conditions that shows the roles played by your charts, your electronics, and your common sea sense in a balanced, minute by minute situational awareness where no single tool predominates. In short, Sweet's book answers the question I always had after reading other books: "OK, so how to I put all this together on the bay with only two hands, two eyes and one brain? This book shows how to do it without overloading yourself.A well planned book, manufactured nicely with good paper and color.I recommend this book.

This is a great resource for the recreational boater that wants to know the essentials of navigating using the electronic tools that are available to the boater today. It explains the principles of navigation in an easy to understand manner and is quite comprehensive.

Paradise Lot: Two Plant Geeks, One-Tenth of an Acre, and the Making of an Edible Garden Oasis in the City, by Eric Toensmeier Jonathan Bates

From Booklist

With their shared passion for plants and a commitment to creating as self-sustaining a garden as possible on a minuscule lot in a small New England city cursed with a terrible climate and even worse soil, Toensmeier and Bates set about converting their urban backyard into a permaculture paradise. Informed by his work on a seminal, two-volume encyclopedia devoted to the concept of forest gardening, Toensmeier transformed the infertile and debris-laden property behind the duplex he shared with Bates into a natural ecosystem teeming with edible plants. As the authors’ postage-stamp-size front yard morphed into a lush, tropical showcase that astounded their Massachusetts community, the backyard incorporated all the components necessary to produce fresh fruits and vegetables year-round using cold-hardy, mostly native plants that would ideally require a minimum amount of work for a maximum output. As a memoir of a purposeful life, Toensmeier’s work is engaging, honest, and natural. As a directive to other gardeners eager to establish natural ecosystems in unlikely settings, his work is instructive, illuminating, and inspirational. --Carol Haggas

Review

Publishers Weekly-In this charming, true-life tale of urban regeneration and the birth of a forest garden movement, Toensmeier, famous among permaculture enthusiasts for his Perennial Vegetables and as coauthor of Edible Forest Gardens, tells the story behind the Holyoke, Mass., garden featured as a test case in the latter, which, in the course of eight years, he and Bates transformed from a bare backyard wasteland into a flourishing, edible Eden. In true permaculture fashion, the book follows not only the progression of the garden but also its influence on and relations with its creators’ lives―including a surprisingly Austen-like romantic element―their neighborhood, and the larger permaculture and forest gardening community. Bates, whose nursery business, Food Forest Farm, is an offshoot of this garden, contributes philosophical and personal essays interspersed throughout the narrative. Fans of Toensmeier and Bates’s work will be thrilled to read the details of their experiments with polycultures, their problems with and solutions for pests and overly aggressive plants, and their idiosyncratic plant choices. Adventurous readers with conventional gardens and lawns may be inspired to venture into the more integrated, evolutionary approach that this book so vividly and appealingly portrays.Booklist-With their shared passion for plants and a commitment to creating as self-sustaining a garden as possible on a minuscule lot in a small New England city cursed with a terrible climate and even worse soil, Toensmeier and Bates set about converting their urban backyard into a permaculture paradise. As a directive to other gardeners eager to establish natural ecosystems in unlikely settings, his work is instructive, illuminating, and inspirational.Kirkus Reviews-The front yard was a short, steep slope of asphalt with a tiny strip of sterile gravel and subsoil," write Toensmeier and Bates, with a "backyard that looked like a moonscape, sparely populated with tufts of crabgrass." It was the perfect place to launch their experiment: Could two men with horticultural experience and a love of nature turn a typical compact backyard into a garden full of lush plants and edible food? The authors chronicle their 10-plus years of trials and experiments, as they transformed their "moonscape" into a permaculture of "trees, shrubs, vines, and herbaceous perennials" that produced food at every level. By analyzing their soil and plotting the movement of shade and sun for a year, the authors discovered the prime locations to build a greenhouse and tool shed. They knew where to plant trees and perennials so that they could bring their site to life, and they developed a deeper kinship with the space and with each other. Along the journey, the authors present ideas like sheet mulching, which can transform a lawn into a useful garden plot capable of growing tomatoes and sweet corn in the first year. They also share their thoughts on the plants that can become noxious weeds despite their culinary uses. Toensmeier and Bates discuss both their triumphs and their defeats, as they experimented with chickens, nitrogen fixers, ground covers, numerous kinds of berry bushes and water plants. Although not a how-to guide, the authors give readers plenty of choices and ideas to think about when deciding whether to embark on this kind of gardening.ForeWord Reviews- “Urban agriculture is becoming a hot topic in sustainable farming circles as more people become interested in organic foods, healthy eating choices, and environmental topics. Given population densities in some areas, “urban agriculture” might seem like an oxymoron to some, but with careful planning and a sense of adventure, even a tiny plot of land can yield a bumper crop. Longtime friends Eric Toensmeier and Jonathan Bates certainly demonstrate the type of strategy and passion required for the effort. In their charming, insightful description of their tiny urban garden in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the two cover twelve years of growing, from their initial reaction to seeing the compacted, gravel-edged soil, to the moment when they have to consider the long-term future of their growing families, which likely means leaving their garden paradise. Along with relaying various missteps and challenges, Toensmeier (with occasional contributions from Bates) layers together their experiences with natural pesticide controls, wild mushroom foraging, city regulations, berry plants, forest gardens, chickens, having girlfriends move in, trellis systems, and an array of other topics. Dividing the garden’s history into four sections―sleep, creep, leap, and reap― Toensmeier creates a combination of personal memoir and permaculture guide. Filled with insight, but not too technical, he strikes an artful balance between giving useful detail and geeking out on gardening nuances. Although readers who want to learn more about compost and chicken coops may get the most out of their journey, Paradise Lot will still be a delight for someone who can’t even grow a houseplant. As Toensmeier and Bates demonstrate, it doesn’t take twenty acres to start a garden filled with nourishing vegetables and gorgeous flowers; it just takes some vision, especially if the potential garden is a scruffy urban lot. Part gardening guide, part personal story, the book is ultimately a call to action, with the pair proclaiming that it doesn’t matter what a patch of land looks like, as long as someone is willing to explore its potential. “We made our little paradise here,” Toensmeier writes. “Imagine what would happen if we as a species paid similar attention to all the degraded and abandoned lands of the world.”Library Journal- STARRED REVIEW "Part handbook, part memoir, this book details the evolution of a permaculture garden on an urban lot in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Having spent years describing permaculture gardens in a theoretical manner, Toensmeier (Perennial Vegetables) and his friend Bates (owner, Food Forest Farm Permaculture Nursery) put these theories into practice when they bought and moved into a duplex situated on a 1/10 acre rundown lot. Nearly a decade later, the lot is unrecognizable―a tropical paradise in the front and a wealth of more than 200 edible plants in the back. Toensmeier clearly explains the processes―needless to say, nothing changed overnight―that achieved this near-miracle. VERDICT: The authors’ prose pulls the reader into their lives, sparking a desire to see the result and try this kind of gardening. The appendixes are filled with useful information for readers who may be intrigued enough to create their own paradise. All readers interested in urban renewal or environmental issues will welcome this book."“Although many of us dream of creating our ideal urban homestead from scratch, the reality is far less pristine: toxic soil, rampant exotic species, outdated codes, and all the other grit of city life. Paradise Lot is a practical manual, based on hard-won lessons, for working positively with the realities of our cities to create a sustainable, peaceful, and abundant oasis in the urban jungle. In this vivid and engaging work, Eric Toensmeier entices us with his journey as an example, explaining what to do, and what mistakes to avoid, to develop our own versions of an edible urban paradise.”--Toby Hemenway, author of Gaia’s Garden“Our connection to place defines us as gardeners and farmers just as much as the plants we choose to grow. The integration of perennial plantings, microclimate, and natural beauty comes about by listening to the land. What a delight to then have one of America’s preeminent permaculture teachers share his personal story with both place and partner. Sometimes that meaningful insight we need in shaping our own garden path comes from hearing of the successes and foibles other gardeners found on their path. The gift Eric Toensmeier and Jonathan Bates offer in Paradise Lot is their heart for all things green.”--Michael Phillips, author of The Holistic Orchard and The Apple Grower“Paradise Lot is a magnificent story about how two young broke landless 'plant geeks' transform an urban lot into a permaculture heaven capable of producing all their fruit and vegetables as well as attracting suitable mates. The book is a groundbreaking work on temperate-climate permaculture as well as a personal saga, as the author’s discovery and discussion of the differences between theory and practice goes beyond anything in the current permaculture literature. The book has a lot of information on growing and using various perennial food plants and, of particular value, it includes specific accounts of what didn’t work and why as well as what did. Paradise Lot should be particularly useful to those with small lots or poor or abused soil. Much writing in permaculture is for people with plenty of land and money. This is permaculture for the rest of us. Best of all, Paradise Lot is fun to read. It overflows with love―love of plants, love of land, love of adventuring on the edge of knowledge, and love of living. It’s hard to put down. I read it in two large gulps.”--Carol Deppe, author of The Resilient Gardener and Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties“Paradise Lot is a timeless classic of urban permaculture in action that clearly shows design evolution over time. This is a true model of the change the world needs.”--Geoff Lawton, founder of Permaculture Research Institute and creator of Greening the Desert“Just when I figured I had heard it all in growing food, comes a book that makes me realize I don’t know the half of it. Paradise Lot is an amazing, almost unbelievable account of how to grow some 150–200 food- and nitrogen-producing plants on a measly one-tenth of an acre, providing food year round in a cold climate. The authors reveal in great detail how they do this, starting with poor urban backyard soil and using totally organic and permaculture methods. They have raised 400 pounds of perennial fruits and vegetables in addition to many annual vegetables per year in this tiny garden. With more time, knowledge, and labor, they are sure they can produce appreciably more. If you want your imagination challenged and intrigued, this is the book for you. As the authors say, here is proof positive that with proper knowledge and will there is no such thing as food scarcity.”--Gene Logsdon, author of A Sanctuary of Trees and Small-Scale Grain Raising

I bought this book because I'm a budding urban gardener curious about permaculture (a sustainable, low maintenance, ecosystem-focused approach to growing food)... and I like a good story. Eric Toensmeier is a self-described "plant geek" and permaculture expert who also co-wrote "Edible Forest Gardens" a 2-volume, 1000+ page epic reference on the theory and practice of permaculture. Unlike EFG, "Paradise Lot" is a comparatively short, accessible, narrative account of Toensmeier's experience turning a barren urban lot in Holyoke, MA into a "food forest."At the start of the book, Toensmeier and his co-gardener Jonathan Bates (who contributes short essays scattered throughout the book) are single, impoverished, lonely 30-something plant geeks struggling to start a business, find a place to settle down, and get girlfriends. Part of the fun and suspense of the book is following their personal stories, which are skillfully and unobtrusively interwoven into the central narrative of the garden. The book is also a terrific introduction to key concepts in permaculture. Toensmeier describes the entire process, from selecting and mapping a site to designing the garden, collecting seeds, working the soil, planting, harvesting and even preparing some of the unusual edibles, troubleshooting invasives and dealing with pests. There's lots of juicy details, but the technical information isn't overwhelming. If you're inspired (as I was) to learn more, there are comprehensive lists of resources (books, organizations, suppliers, etc) plus plant lists and garden maps in the book's appendicies.Toensmeier writes beautifully, with a deeply-felt passion for plants and the natural world. In a broader sense, the book is about being creative, resourceful, and strategic in building a life and community that's both sustainable and satisfying.Very inspiring! A wonderful book.

Ever since my dream girl and I got married and bought our first house, I couldn't wait to work in the yard and garden. Been through 4 houses now (I hope my last!) and this book made me realize just how I've been doing it ALL WRONG.In my current home I hired a "Professional landscape designer" (term used loosely as anyone can call themselves such) to help me with the frame work while I filled in areas later. I wound up getting what 90% of landscapers suggest: Tons of garbage Asian plants that are easy to care for but completely unproductive and actually damage the environment by invading natural woods nearby. My Japanese Privet (Ligustrum), Laurel, and burning bush achieve nothing. I am now considering ripping out about 50 burning bushes that form a hedge and replace with native blueberry. I could have had many pounds of blueberries (which I LOVE) all this time. What was I thinking!I'm slowly replacing other hedges with native plums, (also a great hedge that keeps kids out) and Elderberry and have begun slowly planting/replacing.While the author took things to the extreme - to develop a self-contained eco-system - we can all learn from the trails (garden paths) they blazed (mulched).Great read. But be forewarned - You will want to spit on your backyard and tear everything out when you realize what you've been doing all wrong!

I've been reading, reading, reading any permaculture book I can get my hands on. Ultimately, I am hoping to integrate this type of agriculture and way of living into my family's life so we can lead a more sustainable lifestyle. That being said, I've been completely overwhelmed and not sure where to start-we have 5 acres and I don't want to overwhelm myself! This book is a great intro on how to take those first steps in a very practical manner without jumping in too deep. Other books I've read tell me what to do but I really needed it broken down to something a bit more manageable for our lifestyle at the moment (young kids, work, busy, busy, busy...). This book is perfect if you just need a little direction!

I expected more of the book to actually be devoted to the lot in question, rather than being basically an autobiography of two men who happened to garden in a small urban lot. I expected more of an in depth of: In year one, we planted x y and z and only y thrived. In year two y had grown W feet, etc. etc. I expected more before and after pictures or descriptions of the lot. That being said the book IS all about permaculture and forest gardens (even if the majority is about what happened BEFORE the lot or something tangential about their time on the lot, and not actually about the lot itself) and etc, and I learned more than I would have thought from a biography. I also appreciated that a lot of the plants described in the actual lot section appear to be available for sale on their website (Often I get frustrated about hearing of some great plant that it turns out is virtually unobtainable).

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. We are just beginning our permaculture journey on a half acre in Omaha, Nebraska. Reading about Paradise Lot provided lots of ideas for what we will try.The book is very readable and both authors bring their experiences to the pages in different ways. Eric writes more about the methodology, while Jonathan tells more about the personal/emotional experience. At least, this was my perception of their styles.Overall, a very enjoyable book that is pragmatic and entertaining!

Had to use this for a class, the content was generally pretty good. The authors cover the critical concepts generally well, but the verbose nature of the composition is unnecessary. I ended up buying "The Kimball Group Reader - Remastered Collection", which has a much better flow and an engaging read, plus it is much more economical. Unlike the price for MDBM edition 12 -- beyond reasonable! Even for the rental.Such is the racket that Pearson is known to have a near monopoly on the college and university market. FTC should investigate. Seriously, it is nothing short of racketeering.

This isn't one of those books you can quickly scan and understand. Rather, it's a text you find a quiet place and dedicate team to interpret and appreciate the foundation of E-R model. Once I realized the difference (by Chapter 3 I went back to chapter 1), and spent hours with each chapter, I could appreciate that everything was presented logically and of necessity. Excellent text - a keeper.

Content was mediocre, but the presentation in the kindle version was terrible. The table of contents had so many headings (often more than one per page of content) that trying to move to a location in the second half of the book required a ton of scrolling through the list.I also inadvertently tried to open the book on one too many devices. Typically, Kindle books can be read on up to 6 devices, but this one balked on device #4. I got a warning that I needed to deregister it from a device to download it again. I tried doing so on my home PC and phone, so I could access from the laptop I use for the class which assigned the book, and it still didn't work. I had to make sure that I had my iPad with me because that was the only device which could still access the content. Of course, I could have purchased it again. Given the price of this book, I assume that the publishers cracked down on usage on concurrent devices because they knew otherwise students would try to share it and they'd miss out on gouging as many students as they can.

Let's break down one of his sentences:"The explanation earlier in this chapter of the database development process referred to several different, but related, models of databases developed on a systems development project."Book is about 500+ pages, and probably could be reduced to 400 pages, if the author knew how to condense the english language, and use better words, around commas. I wouldn't even consider it verbose, it's almost like someone sleep talking.

Took longer than expected to receive the book, it was nicely shrink wrapped but I noticed corners were wrinkled (cant blame paper back) and a stain on the inside of back cover page (not sure how that happened). Contents are the same as the American version, but it was cheaper to buy than rent this semester.

I read this cover to cover as a casual database user. Never designed a database in my life or been responsible for database administration. This book provided some good high-level context to me about databases, and reinforced and added to my knowledge about querying databases. The text is a little disjointed (jumping from text to SQL to C to JavaScript just assuming the reader could comprehend the what and why of the code). It's all written for Oracle, so some of the functions simply are irrelevant if you don't use that expensive but powerful system. One last thought. The text is very verbose. Lots of sentences with highlighted keywords and no definitions. Don't try to define a word by using it in a sentence. Too much of the material made me say "huh?? what information was imparted here?" But there are good nuggets buried in the dross.

I'm a little irritated. When you try to download the Access version for the big Pine Valley Furniture Company it links to the ASCII version. If you replace the file name with BigPVFC11e.zip you will get the file. However the examples in chapter 2 don't actually match what you download. So the queries they show you as an example don't work. You can still play with the tables but for a $200 book you think they would make sure their website is accurate. The information in the book seems comprehensive.

Basically, the information this book contains is rendered inaccessible by the poor presentation.Remember writing that paper where you needed more length, so you went back and reworded everything to be expressed in a more complicated way? That's this textbook. Sentences are needlessly long, making content more difficult to absorb. Word choices are fluttery and fanciful when they need to be brick-solid. The prose squanders my time and my attention.Composition is bad. This book consistently names something I've never heard of, talks for a few paragraphs about it as though I know what it is, leads me to believe I've missed something and maybe I should go back and find it, and then finally defines the thing. Additionally, time after time something is brought up and then dismissed as being "beyond the scope of this text" or contained in proper detail in some other, future chapter (your princess is in another castle...).Images are never anywhere near the point in the text that references them! Reading about figure X-X? Well, figure X-Y is directly adjacent to what you're reading, and X-X is two pages back. For an e-book this is impossible to deal with, and even for a physical copy this would be ridiculous. And the jokes? Yes, it's got jokes. They aren't good. They aren't funny. They are meant to be a way of keeping the reader engaged, but they fall flat and they take up space I had hoped would contain useful information. This textbook is awful. It contains mountains of good information, but the writing is so bad as to render the content inaccessible.
